Okay, so back on track here... Let's look at why they contacted in the first place. As dumb as it sounds, I have a WAY easier time believing that the oil squirters were the things out of spec and not the pistons. How tight do you think Mazda's tolerances are on a piece of bent steel tubing? If it clears the factory piston, which is almost a full 0.2" shorter than the Arias, why would they make the tolerances tight? Think... Those squirters are designed for factory pistons which have a ton of room before the squirters. Why would the chinaman bending the squirters at the factory give a **** how close they are to tolerance? As long as they don't hit the factory pistons, they're fine.
I just talked to Dana on the phone, and we had a 20 minute conversation on this thread. It doesn't make sense that the pistons are bad, however we can't rule that out. The only way to tell is to take a measurement (precise) of the piston from top to bottom, and see what is yielded. For Sam's sake as well. If the pistons are not to blame, and he puts new ones in thinking that's the problem, when the real problem still remains, the problem might return and cause more damage, sending him back to square one.
