Oil spotted on top of engine...

Hi,
When I removed my engine cover, I saw this part with oil. I would imagine this is not normal. I remember seeing this part here before but I cannot find it anymore. What do you call this part, and what do I need to do to stop the oil leak?

Yep, this’s a known issue and the leak is coming from the VVT solenoid / oil control valve (OCV), part no. PE01-14-420A, which is operated by PCM and controls the hydraulic oil passages to the hydraulic variable valve timing actuator for variable exhaust valve timing.

Unfortunately you have to remove the valve cover to replace the OCV which is now very expensive with MSRP $363.05! It was $188.72 in Feb. 2022, and at the time we could get the OEM OCV at partsouq.com near Dubai, United Arab Emirates for only $130 with shipping. You also need a new set of valve clove gasket and a new OCV seal.

2014 CX5 Tune-Up items to replace?

Also check post #55 and #93 in above thread.

Alright! Finally got around to swapping the OCV in the head.

Comparing the two OCV's side by side, they appear identical in all marking, except the new one has a QR code just like other parts around the engine. Not sure why the old one doesn't have one. Checking it with my phone camera went right to the part number for this part. Old on left and new on right in all pics.

The sky isn't falling yet. It's seepage, not much of a leak. You might spray it off with something like QD electronic cleaner (plastic safe)to remove the oil then monitor it.
Looking again from the picture, that really doesn't look too bad. I'd clean it (so it's dry) for sure and see if oil seeps from the top down indicating valve leakage or maybe the gasket is seeping and the oil is migrating upward on the valve. Also, it looks like some oil on the black tubing wire protector for the valves electrical connector possibly from oil vapor.
Bottom line---- If it were mine I'd give the top of the engine a gentle bath (which it could use) and make sure the valve and surrounding area were free of dirt and old oil and then monitor it. No sense condemning an expensive valve that truly isn't leaking. And even if it's just the valve's gasket it may be such a slow seep that it poses no problem.
*** I just looked. You have a 2013? and you haven't noticed any seepage of oil anywhere else on the car? Mine's a 2014. Our cars are definitely in seepage territory.

We’d hope the oil seepage or leak isn’t from the expensive OCV itself. But unfortunately that’s a wishful thinking based on many reports. The leak isn’t from the OCV seal / gasket / grommet, but from wire harness pins inside the OCV connector. The OCV seepage / leak would affect the exhaust valve timing. If the OP plans to keep its 2013 CX-5 for a while, he should consider to replace the OCV although the current $363.05 MSRP for the OCV alone is ridiculous!

Here @PatrickGSR94 who at first replaced only the OCV seal / gasket but in vein. He felt he waited too long to replace the OCV, then de-pinned the harness plug to avoid contaminating the new OCV.

Since the old valve must have been leaking internally through the wire harness pins, the harness clip got oil all up inside it. To avoid contaminating the new OCV, I de-pinned the harness plug and cleaned all parts using brake cleaner, warm water, and also a pipe cleaner (nowadays they're called "fuzzy sticks") :ROFLMAO:

I also got the valve cover all cleaned up from the oil that had leaked out of the old OCV, and reinstalled it with fresh Mazda sealant at the 4 locations specified in the FSM. Now I have the bolts hand-tight and am waiting an hour before torquing the bolts to final spec.

So sounds like MNAO is trying to mark up US OEM parts price a lot to recoup too many losses from fixing cracked heads? :p
