CX-5 Oil Consumption - Non Turbo with CDA @ 70,000 miles

Hello -

I've noticed in increase in oil consumption on my 2020 CX-5 GT non-turbo with CDA. It has ~70,000 miles, and I bought it as a CPO with 54,000 miles.

Typically, I may have noticed that after running the oil for ~5,000 miles, I may see the level on the dipstick drop to 3/4 full, so losing around 1/4 quart. However, on this oil change, after a little over 5,000 miles (I'm getting it changed tomorrow -- and will bring it up with the dealer), I was down to the MIN hole and had to top off (I chose Mobil 1).

The strangest part is I check the oil level almost weekly, and just a little over a week ago it was at 1/2-3/4 full on the dipstick, so seems to have lost a little less than half a quart in just a week!

Another thing to note: on this oil change (which were all done at a MAZDA dealership during the time I've had it), I requested the MAZDA Genuine 0W-20 Moly Engine Oil over the dealer's bulk 0W20. And it has resulted in a slightly smoother idle and quieter operation of the engine, but I have to wonder, just due to the timing, if this MAZDA oil didn't play nice with my CX-5.

As I mentioned, I am getting an oil change tomorrow so I will bring it up with the dealer, but just wondering if anyone had any experience with this or had any advice. But I also know the MAZDA stated "normal" oil consumption is a quart per 1200 miles, so I doubt unless it gets bad I'm getting any support for it.

Thanks!

Yep, it sounds like it has developed the cylinder head crack associated with the CD engine, where oil leaks out.

You should check the back side of the cylinder head by yourself first and see if there’s any sign of oil leaks before you go to the dealer.

Check for leaks.

Also, have the oil changed elsewhere and make sure to use 5w30. This will slow the leak/consumption (unlikely to be sudden consumption)

Just an update...

Currently at the dealer. They found an oil leak at the front timing cover and timing cover gasket. Will be covered under CPO powertrain warranty!

Thanks for the update. And it’s nice to have the CPO warranty. Honestly I really don’t believe the oil leak from front timing chain cover is the reason to your sudden oil loss. Although the oil seepage from timing chain cover is a known issue and there’s a TSB for it, it’s a very slow leak and you won’t see the sudden drop on oil level. I’d recommend to check your oil level often after the repair like you’re doing before, and watch the backside of the cylinder head for any sign of oil leak due to the cracked cylinder head.

JXS - come back in a month or two and let us know if that was really the source of the leak.
I kinda have my doubts.

Motor on ! That engine should last - If the dealer is somehow trying to jack you up ---which I dont want to believe ---they will bare the responsibility of the follow up visit ---Its a known issue - makes complete sense - Thats a very good year and excellent trim level -- take very good care of it

Appreciate you coming back and providing an update!

Keep an eye on your oil level after the repair. Its good to keep an eye on it in case the dealer makes mistakes on the job, or if a different problem arises. Definitely do a thorough check at least a month before your CPO warranty expires.
