Intake Question

I started off with an ebay SRI with a K&N filter. Our car club did a dyno day at a local shop and with all my mods I dyno'd at 115-117 whp.

I changed to an INJEN CAI and dyno'd at MAM's dyno and got consistantly 117 WHP.

Having both types and having been on the dyno with both and not seeing any gain between the two, I'd say its a matter of choice and looks. They perform the same.

I had an injen and it was noisy and hydrolocking was always on the back of my mind.

I switched back to stock and the intake temperatures would be good until the thermostat opened. The radiator heated that intake piece that sits above it so I took those off. Then, hot engine bay air was then being pumped right into my airbox so I got a piece of 3" dryer vent tubing and routed that into my fender well where the CAI goes, but not much past the hole. End result?
CAI temps + quietness + easy filter change + less risk of hydrolock :)

toucci- I like your thinking.

I run a K&N drop in and for the longest I ran with snorkel/silencer in from of the airbox off. The deeper sound and hissing was nice (this sound made it feel faster too :) ) but my intake temps were at least 20-25 degrees higher than with the silencer (according to the ecu). So I now have the silencer back on.

I have a K&N Typhoon and love it. It's a cai, but I live in san diego, so I doubt that will ever be a problem with h2o, and besides, the K&N comes with a "Drycharger" which is supposed to keep it dry.
dang...i live in SD and the only protege I ever see my own...i dont get it

Finally hit some rainy s*** the other day with the oem intake back on & not one bit of weirdness like with sri. Seems to be averaging 50-60 miles more a tank with same driving habits.

so your car was trippin out with the sri when it was rainin?

any clue as to why? i just ordered mine today, its a bomz sri.
my friend has one on his integra, and never has any problems no matter what the weather is like

So peak was the same. Was there any difference in the curve? When I swapped from stock to Megan SRI (eBay), I noticed a slight difference. When I swaped from Megan SRI to Injen CAI, I noticed a bit more down low. It could've been all mental, but I've noticed "slight" differences when doing mods on my other cars and found 1/2 second drops in my 1/4 ET.

Yeah it was but still not sure if it was that or something else. Hasn't done it since putting the oem back on. Drove through some major monsoon action the other day with lots of water on road & raining hard in freeway traffic at near freeway speeds & no weirdness. Dunno, had sri for 3 years or so in various positions & never had issue either til recently. Even had a drycharger cover thing over the k&n that seemingly repels water like ducks back. Filter was positioned over the hole for cai but turned up where it sat behind the headlight. Also have MSP engine cover so not sure if coils getting anything from what goes thru radiator but wasn't happening before I had the cover. Who knows, it's a daily driver mainly so I don't really want to have to treat it like a race car as far as having to be constantly tweaking on stuff......OK I lied, I just don't have time to on a regular basis so just trying to strike a balance.

If there is no big difference....i would probably get an ebay one and get a K&N filter cos it is cheaper
btw....is there any problem with the ebay ones??? and will they fit into an automatic???
I have an injen and the only reason I got it is because it was cheap and there. the only thing that really matters in intakes is that they are shaped well enough to fit comfortably in the engine compartment and not so small that they are restrictive. with a DOHC set up, you will need a larger intake than SOHC. also make sure that the filter is not restrictive. K&N is good with high flow but so are cheaper brands. As for the AT thing, all I can say is that you're asking the wrong person.

feed the motor

The reason we are called tuners is because we need to tune all parts to match and be compatible with each other. the intake you had may have allowed too much airflow for the fuel or electrical management. another possibility is that the filter may be improperly oiled which would contribute to either oil or water to get into the manifold.

Ummmmm, you didn't read between the lines. I've had k&n's probably before you were born. Been matching, tuning, tweaking japanese vehicles longer than tuner was anything but a radio function. Actually the filter had been cleaned & reoiled after whatever was going on & it made no difference. The filter is red with oil & the MAF sensor & intake piping is dry inside so I'm going to assume that the filter is not too dry & not too oily. "Weirdness" being all low level possibilities had been eliminated before posting anything about it. Assume that I am old enough to be your father's age or maybe even your grandfather's age & have been wrenching on all kinds of s*** since preschool age & you would be much closer than the assumptions used in your post. Thanks for the review on basics but not old enough to be forgetting that much. **edit** BTW, welcome to the forums.
