Whos car is that and is it finished??

He is a guy from our local forum (Montreal). As for now the swap is not completed as this engine on the pic was a blown engine that he used for a fit test...

Damm just a little bit too late. I was about to say the exact same thing. We invited him over so he can explain the details himself.

Hi everybody.

I'm the owner of the "soon-to-be-V6" Protege. The swap is not finished yet, maybe by the end of the month it will be running. There is some things I have to make clear before I go into details. This car will be a race car only(noticed the roll cage in the photo?), so a lot of "streetability details" have been left out. There is no A/C, power steering, heater, ventilation, radio, etc. I just need working lights, brakes and ignition.I brought a WHOLE 1993 Probe GT with a KL-ZE in it for the swap, I plan to put my 165K kms FS engine in it(winter beater)!

Mechanical/physical issues: not much! Everything fits like it was meant to be there, just take the motor mounts off the FS and put them on the KL! Also, the Long Neck intake manifold of the KL31 version of the KL-ZE doesn't fit if you keep the stock master cylinder. I was planning to put remote master cylinder, but I'm too poor! So a curved neck ZE manifold(best) or KL-03 manifold is mandatory. The transmission I used was internally broken so I don't know if they have the same spline counts, in the worst case I just swap the driveshaft ends, the transmission is almost identical externally. You need to use the radiator from the V6, so new brackets must be made.

Electrical/Electronics issues: well, I can not say that it will be easy, but it will be a lot of work. From our initial observation, Mazda didn't seem to have change a lot of things(connector-wise) over the years so it will be simpler. It will be an adventure to see what fit and what not! I have two whle cars, so I'm sure I'll find a way.

I'm sure that my experience with this swap will help somebody to someday make a streetable V6 Protege, till then I'll race it! (cheers2)

P.S.: Did you notice the nice Mazda 6 brakes on the car? (wow)

thats sweet how it all bolted in there, the onlything i can see that will give you issues is a streetable one running heater/ac/power steering/ect, man, makes me wish i had the 2.0 rather than the 1.6l...

Very interesting swap. Please come back frequently with updates. Would like to see how it comes out. It cool to see something different.

Just a quick question: After the swap, is there room to turbo it as well, or is it so cramped you can't fit it?

k lets get this straight?
u used the mx6 tranny?? is it the same one the 2.0l uses in the pro already?
one last thing, the kl-ze, is it ob1 or 2?

prolly be cramped, slap a supercharger on there instead.. prolly be less of a hassle

Yea your probably right with the supercharger. It dont look like you can fit all the piping and intercooler for a turbo.

But how much heavier is this v6 compared to our fs? How expensive you guys think this swap will cost you?

Dont know much about the 3rd gens, havent realy worked aroudn them too much. But, Doom spun u will NEED to run your P/S if u dont or if u remove it it will seize up your waterpump,

What u can do is just have the fluid loop thru without going thru the rack&pinion, if u just dont want it. But If u do all that u might as well just go ahead and use it. But i advise not to remove the p/s pump,a nd make sure to keep it functioning properly.

And about the Brake Booster being in the way of the long neck manifold, u can use the mx3 brake booster which is about half the size of the protege one. Which will save space and the long neck manifold should fit, IF u still want to use it.

With your ECU electric issues, u really shouldnt have any. Just use the probe GT/mx6 LS. I would say try a mx3 Gs harness but those are more geared toward the 1st gens BG chassis like mine.

The 6cyl Linkage , and the 4 cyl linkage ARE different

Im willing to bet my V6 protege, that this swap is as simple as it was in my car. You will be suprised how related the cars are.

Most of them are OBD1 i think,

176kg complete motor with all accessories and exhaust back to the cat. Confirmed with load cell

176 kg roughly 388.013lbs kl-ve

whats the weight of the fs??

actually 2.0 and 1.6 have the same mounting points so it should bolt in for you as well

Just a quick question: After the swap, is there room to turbo it as well, or is it so cramped you can't fit it?
there's plenty of room iirc a turbo will fit in a bg ...323 with a kl swap and you can turbo it 3rd gens engine bay has alot more room

yeah 2.0 tranny i belive is differen't ..i'm pretty sure
klze obd1...i dunno my brother knows more about this stuff than me but this is starting to sound good though if there aren't major issues this might not be a bad swap
and i like the idea of no turbo

peace

yeah, i know its the same mounting points, but i also have the auto, i would have to swap that s*** to to make it manual, cause if i spend that much mula to swap it, i gonna want the manual..

The MX6 V6 tranny and the I4 tranny are INTERNALLY the same thing. the V6 tranny however has a different bell housing.
You can get ahold of OBD-II KLZEs.
They came in the later JDM Mx6s, but most of the OBD-II ZEs will be out of the 96+MS8s in japan.
they are alot harder to come buy tho.
your best bet would be to either A) get a obd-I ZE and concert it which is not very hard, just a couple more wires to run.
or B) just get a usdm 96+ klDE and swap over the 4 basic parts from the ze
Cams, Pistons, Heads, Intake manifold, or just upgrade them to better ones.

Dont know much about the 3rd gens, havent realy worked aroudn them too much. But, Doom spun u will NEED to run your P/S if u dont or if u remove it it will seize up your waterpump,

good ups, i was gonna say that too.
you'll cause some real problems if you disconect the P/S

Just a quick question: After the swap, is there room to turbo it as well, or is it so cramped you can't fit it?

I have seen BG 323's with turbo'd kldes, and as i stated earlier you 3rd gen guys have ALOT more room to work with in your engine bays then us 1st gen guys.

and as far as intake manifold clearence, im not sure if a MX3 cylender would work?
what you could always do is get ahold of a 2.5l milenia intakefold.
its the curved neck style (MS8 style) klze manifold. it should fit no problem, and then sell ur strait neck ZE mani for a good $200

somebody really needs to do this.
im not sure how many of you guys have riddin in/driven a PGT/MX6 ls, but i have to say the V6 is much better then any turbo'd I4 IMO.
its so much smoother, and sounds way better.
oh yeah

you can turbo it too!!!

maybe when i pull out my DE and get the ZE in my mx6 we can try this on my bro's car. wouldn't that be sweet. the gang of V6 mazdas (sssh)

AND OMG LOOK AT MY BROTHERS CAR NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOT!!! THOSE SEXY BLACK RIMS AND RED CALIPERS!!!! (freak)

sorry, that was my off topic ramble of the day
