clicking sound??

followed a couple friends on bikes yesterday so i was pounding on the gas yesterday. but on the way home i'm hear a wierd noise but i cant figure out what it is. its sounds like when the cv's go bad and your turning and you hear that click click sound but it only does it when i'm accelerating. if i let go of the gas it goes away but soon as i tap the gas to accelerate it starts clicking again. any ideas?? any help is appeciated!!

subscribing...same damn problem on my 03 P5 with 50,000 miles. I have no idea what the hell it is. And its only when I am accelerating under load. No sound whatsoever when in neutral or parked and revving it. I can't even tell WHERE its coming from. If someone has figured this out PLEASE POST.

Things I have done to try to figure it out:
1) removed VTCS butterflies and checked for loose VICS butterflies (none were loose)
2) running synthetic oil but it doesn't seem to have helped
3) checked for exhaust leaks, none to speak of (except that weird gap between the Mazdaspeed Sport Exhaust (axle-back) and the stock J-pipe which is caused by the crappy, mis-shaped gasket, but I don't know if that is actually leaking)
4) flushed intake system (just throttle body and intake manifold)
5) changed spark plugs

Any other ideas? Next on the list is to change tranny oil to Redline MT-90. I'm also getting a Racing Beat Cat-Back (should be here Wednesday) which should tell me if it was a weird leak caused by my Mazdaspeed axle-back.

mine sounds like its coming from the wheel well, i have the car up now checking to see anything wierd. i'm thinkin it might be coming from the clutch considering that the stock clutch is s*** directly from mazda or a motor/tranny mount?

s***, this happened to me, CHECK YOUR LUGS ASAP!!!! I almost had a wheel fall off, it made that noise cause of how offbalanced the wheel is.

that was the first thing that i checked. my dad thinks it might be the cv joints. took the wheel off and shock the rotor back and forth and makes like a clicking sounds.

Just to let you know, my boyfriend will let you know what was going on with his car. He's at NOPI in Atlanta, so it's not easy for him to get online now, but he'll be back Sunday. I know that he took it to the Mazda dealership and they replaced the cv joints but it didn't solve the problem. They told him his oil was low and that's what was causing it, but topping off the oil only fixed it for a few minutes.

I just can't remember for the life of me what it was in the end.

I forgot to add that mine only does it after I have been driving for a while. I just balanced my tires and I know that I torqued the lugs because I did the balance myself. I don't think it's the CV joints because it doesn't do it when I am turning, only under heavy acceleration and a very warm engine.

I also have thought it might be the clutch because I can hear it very very faintly as I am letting the clutch out but its not nearly as loud as it is when I plant my right foot. But I don't really feel like ripping apart my tranny just to check the clutch. I'll dive into that task when I am actually replacing the clutch.

now everytime i turn the car on it makes a rattling sound. i'm thinkin i f'd up the clutch?

You engine is proper ******. That my friend happened to me twice.

The same rattling sound under accelleration at about 3k rpm. and when i started the car.

Twas a product of oil starvation. says mazda.

hopefully you are under warranty. I am on my third engine and hopefully it wont happen again. Ive been babying it since the install of the 3rd engine.

Good luck.

I hear a ticking on my car too, it only happends when my car is stopped with the engine on. for some reason it makes this really loud clicking noise its sooo anoying! does n e one know what it could be?

typical lifter noise from mazda engines. I have two friends who owned miata's... and both of their cars had the lifter clicking, and my friend has a protege and a mazda truck that make the same noise. My p5 does it as well. Its nothing to worry about though.. it just gets annoying... and it usually starts somewhere after 40-50k miles. Only way to totally cure it is a complete rebuild... which eventually it'll start making the noise again. Only thing you can do to ensure you're not doing damage is use good oil and keep the level maintained.

i had spun a crank bearing. it burned oil and made that awful clicking sound. i tried all the cheap remedies (also tried some stuff that is supposed to quieten lifter noise) but that was a waste of time and money. hopefully you still are under warranty.

Exactly what happened to me. Spun a bearing. Get it checked out ASAP!!

Wouldn't a spun bearing make noise all the time, not just under acceleration?

so what is everyone saying?

Is the engine screwed even if the noise is only under load?
My noise is definitely NOT lifter noise.
I only have 50,000 miles on a very well maintained P5 that has been serviced at the same dealership since brand new and before me there was one owner who was and still is a Mazda parts guy (who I have known for more than 4 years). I doubt a Mazda engine would show signs of a soon to come death after only 50,000 miles. Any suggestions other than rebuilding the whole damn engine?

ok, lets see how i can say this.....yer engine is ******. take it to the dealer and have them remove the oil pan and you will see lots of soft metal (that is what happened to me.)
