Heres some pics of the pistons after a few hours of work. I didn't get a close up of them before I touched them but for those that have seen them up close I think you can appreciate how much work was done.
was that scotchbrite work? when they are untouched they are so pretty its really hard to make yourself do that to them, even though it does help... haha
Yeah I started with carbide, went to a sandroll, then went to a flap wheel, then went to emery cloth by hand, then a medium scotchbrite by hand. There was alot of re-shaping but the pics. don't really do it justice.
It was very hard to do. Everybody at work thought I was nuts. But I'm gonna need all the help I can get to run with the big boys this year. I'll be running one of the smallest turbos.
The rotating assembly is going this week to be balanced.
I'm gonna finish on the head, polishing the combustion chambers and what not. The lower and upper intake manifold are done. The exhaust manifold is ported, polished, painted and ready. The s-pipe is fully ported and polished. The turbo is fully polished and ready. The down-pipe now sports a 3" cut out directly below the s-pipe. The spacers and fuel rail are done for the 577cc injectors.
Now it's time for the stuff that seperates the men from the boys...... lol
Rotating assembly is fully balanced. Rods and pistons are now one. They will be going in the block later this week. The head is off getting some magic vodoo done. The valves are getting back-cut, the valve job is going to be no less than phenomenal (the guy doing it does some of the busch series cars and almost all the sprint cars around here). He is also unshrouding all the valve and re-shaping the combustion chamber. He garuntees me an easy 15-20cfm gain from the valve job and reshaping of the ports.
After talking with a couple of Mazda engineers, they suggested to me making or having a stronger tensioned spring for the timing belt tensioner made. After shooting ideas back and forth they decided they could come up with something. I will be getting that later next week hopefully. : )
Yeah after seeing a couple of cars with oilling problems I figured I would do what I can to get the oil in the pan faster. As far as the pistons I wish I had the energy to have kept them stock and dyno'd them then do it to see if I gained 28hp too. Oh well.
Can't use that "stock" advertising anymore.(thumb) Oh and that bugered up exhaust is hot, is that custom?? My WBO2 bung looks almost as bad! Looking good though, get er running and lets see some numbers!
