transmission Disaster part2

Well last Friday (21st) my transmission ate it again (First time>>> http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=33367.0)

I was heading up an on ramp and shifted at about 5k from 3rd to 4th. When I let out the clutch I had no 4th gear. No noise no nothing. It was as if I was in neutral. I shifted up into 5th and pulled the hill I was on then tried to shift back into 4th and nothing. No noise no grinding just no 4th gear... As I entered the off ramp I needed a lower gear so I tried to shift to 3rd or second and the shifter was completely froze in position. Luckily I was able to roll onto a flat turn out area off the road way.

I sat there thinking WTF? The car was running fine, Shifting fine then suddenly no 4th... I have heard broke gears before and this is usually accompanied with a very loud noise and or vibrations. This time there was nothing.
So I thought I may have broken the shift linkage.
I tore the console apart after getting the car towed home and the shift selector cable was frozen up.

Yesterday I had it towed to the shop and today they called with a quite unbelievable diagnosis. They say that all the teeth were shaved off of 4th gear. Ever single tooth.
I find this incredibly hard to believe as like I said before there was no sound no grinding or any other indicators at all.

I really don't drive this car hard at all. So this is a big shock to me. I've been driving manual transmission cars for 17 years now and have never had problems like this.

I hope to have the car fixed soon. I was supposed to meet up with Juan to have a new manifold and exhaust system as well as a few other parts installed but now I am wondering if it will be possible.

Ill posts back with some photos and what not later.

Jeez, thats crazy. When i blew forks in my transmission it was loud, and it actually felt like something broke. So shaving off an entire gear would be much worse.

ask to see the broken part before going any further in terms of paying for repairs

Agreed.

That's crazy though, but you would definitely hear or feel something if you tore all the teeth of fourth gear. Have they already torn apart the tranny?

I couldnt believe it so I went down to the shop.
I was shocked at what I saw. Every tooth is gone of the one gear. I cant believe this could happen without me hearing and feeling it. I took a couple teeth of third gear a while back and it was very loud.

maybe someone else was driving your car, a g/f, friend, mechanic. still very strange and yet cool at the same time. that is some crazy damage for your power levels.

damn that sucks. well there goes the theory that mazda decided to make the newer trannies stronger. Time to put in the GTX gears :D

I believe a place called ipt transmission makes a stronger trans for the 6 w/ the 2.3L so it should work in our cars if you have the 2.3L. This way if you boost you wont break anything. I'll have to check this out but the website is www.ipttrans.com

probably because of the bad cable shifter bulls*** that the newer mazdas have, it's binding and causing misshifts without you knowing it (because you can't feel it! it's all rubbery through that cable mess!) and tearing up s*** in the tranny

can you give me some more information about this. I am trying to figure out why this is happening. Any thoughts on the short shifter amplifying this problem?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think the short shifter would cause the problem. What happened was crazy.
