mpi resistor problem solved

i am having the most trouble with this damn thing.I am almost ready to swap a MSP owner thier ecu and some other type of fuel managemnet for my mpi,it's practically brand new, I cant figure it out. I hooked it up RIGHT and it still won't run. My car ran perfect before I started the install and now it won't idle, smokes BAD at idle.

Have you searched through the engine management forum? It sounds like you might be running it so rich it won't idle, what size injectors and at what fuel presure you running? MPI is a good management get help with it and you should be more than happy with the end results.

First off did you have any cel's before the install?? If so that could be your problem. If it won't idle correctly first try adjusting the global fuel cal to a -3 or so. Then in the 8x16 map find the cell that the car is idling in and adjust the number higher or lower to get the analog out voltage as close to 2.08 as you can. On mine it flucuated between 2.04 and 2.08, see if this helps with idle. Don't give up that easy. If you need help pm me and i'll send you my number, I can probably walk you through some of it. Or hit me up on aim @ jecuncg.

I still need my stock ECU in conjunction with the MPI to run the car right? If you need your stock MAZDASPEED Protege ECU to work WITH and MPI tuner. Why would anyone pull their ECU out to trade? The MPI tuner would be essentially useless? If I`m wrong let me know and I`ll trade?

Maybe he's not running an Ecu along with the MPI tuner...Nah, no one is that dumb...

It wouldn't even turn over. We installed mpi on a local guys car a few weeks ago and it won't start. There was absolutely no spark. Turned out he had an old turbo module, and we didn't hook up wire, causing the circuit for the coils to be left open. (I have a newer turbo module and didn't know about this). Figured out the problem and his car is running good now. I know this isn't the problem here because he said it will run, just not well. It is simply a tuning issue, that I could probably resolve in less than 5 minutes.

Did you talk to Mpnick about your problem? I'm sure he'll be glad to help you with your problem.

Well, tell me. I`m right or no? The car`s ECU needs to be in the car WITH the MPI tuner to work? Ryoga was tellin me I`m right? Damn, I wish I had a spare ECU! I want it! I`m gonna go lookin for one. Hold on to that tuner... Stop trying to talk him into fixing it, shh...

It's a piggy back so it needs the ECU in order to work. Mpi tuner will allow you to pass inspections without any problems.

Yes you have to have an ecu, mpi is not a standalone, it's a piggyback that rely's on the stock computer. MPI by itself would not do a thing.

I can't find the problem. The injectors are maxed at at 4.98, so it's running so rich at idle it smokes like crazy and idles rough. I set the fuel cal at -10 and it didn't change one bit. I have a MP3 that I just turbo'd and I am about to give up on this thing and get a Msp ecu and run stock boost. I have to get it running by monday or I won't have a job. I triple checked the connections with Tim's instructions and it dos the same thing. The afr's won't even come up on the screne it's running so rich.

It's the new mpi, I got it brand new from Nick and I can't get ahold of him or Tim.

what is the fuel zero calibration set to on the analog tab under gloabal settings? set it to a 0 then adjust the 8x16 box that you idle in which should be the first or second box from the bottom of the 8x16 in the far left colum, adjust it until your analog out reads 2.04-2.08 then your car should idle right. (around 10% deflection)

sounds like he may need to take his fual cal to a negative number. He may want to set the fuel cal to -3 and see what happens if it is still rich then keep going negative until it is no longer rich and the analog out is sitting between 2.04 and 2.08. Then you would want begin adjusting your 8x16 analog map you may even want to go to a negative number on the fuel cal and make the car run lean and then slowely add fuel back with the 8x16 analog as well.

Problem found!! I think... Me and BiggTim went through the wiring one by one and it was the maf wire, it was hooked up right but the wrong resistor is in the green wire and when I tried to ground it the resistor wouldn't let it ground. So a trip to Radio Shack tomorrow and we'll see if a new resitor fixes it. I need a 1.1k and it has a 6k in it. hmm.....we'll see.

So I guess we`re not trading then? I was really gonna go find an ECU. Good luck!
Here`s two videos of that car with the supercharger in your avatar by the way:
