What have you done to your Mazda5 today?

I saw an incident where someone tried doing that and claiming a rear-ender, but the car had a dashcam that caught the driver backing up. Stuff like that convinces me that a dash cam is a requirement these days.

Wasn't today, was on sunday.

I changed front foglight bulbs to Novsight LED's

And also installed two relays with capacitator, self made "switchback-cornerlight" module 😅 for both foglights own "module".

Taking illustrative picture is little bit hard. 🤦‍♂️
But here is it.

Basically what's happening there, is I have left turnsignal on, left front foglight lights up and also at the same time it shuts down the amber corner light, so it's more visible blinking. 😎

What have I done to my Mazda 5? 🤦‍♂️

Sad day indeed. '07/90k and running fine, even still drives unaffected... but insurance is calling it a "total loss." Madness! 😡

Did the air bag deploy?

ETA: I'm guessing no air bag deployment because you say it drives fine and unaffected! Me, I would drill a few holes in that bumper cover and zip tie it together and keep driving it!

Nope, no airbags, and the bumper did it's job perfectly. Zip ties are cheaper!!

Being an '07 with 90k miles, it really isn't worth anything, except the low cost of ownership. Take the buyout from insurance and tell them you want to keep the car. Get some used bumper parts off eBay, and drive it for another however many years you want to keep it.

But then wouldn't it end up with a salvage title, causing a big insurance rate hike?

I'd be more inclined to find a shop that'll write an estimate for just under the total loss level. Smaller payout in the short term, but it could save a lot of money in the long run.

Glad no one was hurt. I am shocked you have collision coverage!? It's a blessing in disguise b/c premiums would exceed the cost of the car in the long run...

The pic angle is hard to tell but it looks like there's some frame damage judging by the gap difference between the hood and headlights -unless the driver side headlight shift with the bumper cover.

It will have a salvage title, yes. But again, the car isn't worth all that much, despite what sentimental value it has for you. Insurance will total loss a car when the repairs value over 75% the value of the vehicle. At best, in excellent condition, the car is worth $2500. 75% of that value means $1875. A used bumper cover and paint match is going to go over that cost, unless you go cheap on the paint. And then add in all the little parts / pieces to remount the fog light, replace the grill, straighten out the bumper support, fender liner, etc...

Driving a car with salvage title isn't going to raise your rates. Plus, drop collision coverage and just carry liability. Not having collision will keep your rates lower, and liability will cover the other person if you get into another accident with the car.

Are you sure about this? Everything I've heard and read on this topic has suggested that insurance rates are higher with salvage/rebuilt title cars. Much smaller difference if liability-only, but not zero.

I thought you can’t insure a car with a “salvage” title. You have to get it state inspected/certified (proper paper work on repairs and kinda expensive, inspectors are tough) to get back to “reconstructed” title, which you can then insure.

I’m no expert, just briefly looked into and consider picking up a salvage car for cheap, only to learn this and decide -hell no, and you cannot DIY (unless you are certified).

If (big if) you know a guy who knows a guy, you can get the title washed. In short DoT has own state mandate and defines “total” loss differently.

I just had my Mini Clubman totaled out, and I just renewed my insurance policy, too. I dropped collision coverage, and the new policy is half the cost it was before.

Important correction. Thanks.

That makes sense.

My point is, if you had a clean title and still dropped collision coverage, it'd be even cheaper than it is now. That's my understanding.

In other words, in terms of cost,

clean title + liability < rebuilt title + liability < any title + liability + collision

I got a Mazda5 2012 wit 220K . I am the one original owner. I have installed 17" Sport rims, Pioneer double din radio, all new Pioneer speakers and 1200 watt amp wit small 8" subwoofer. For Performance I got an aFe Takeda cold air intake, Taiwan Thunder performance headers wit downpipe and 2.5" exhaust system wit sport muffler. All suspension in last 2 years have been changed since most of it was giving away. I also put Corksports sway bars both in the front and rear. Next is some Mzr camshafts and big brakes from Corksports. Then I will stop lol, I mean after I tune it.

Funny, I just got in touch with the body shop and insurance today. Since it had been 2 weeks since I dropped it off for repairs. Car had been sitting not getting worked on. Body shop is waiting on insurance and insurance is waiting on the body shop. Both totally inept. Turns out the body shop is saying the repairs will be more than the final estimate, so now the insurance is deciding to make my claim a "total loss."

First estimate when claim was filed was for $1764, the final estimate submitted after the body shop took it apart was $1804. Then apparently the insurance heard it could go up from the body shop. The insurance worked out the price and are offering me around $3300. Which feels really low, considering my s*** box Corolla got $3800(granted this was 2021, market was ******). I asked about the buy back price, and they said they will get back to me tomorrow or after Christmas.

New brakes & rotors, new tires (Turanza quiettrack), costco tire center did a poor job balancing the tires, but the I sorted this out by the way, 1400 miles later, we're back from a trip and everything is working as expected. Average MPG ~25 or so, lot's of driving in the mountains and dunes.
I feel like I have to replace the air filter after desert driving.
