top speed

When I had my ES I took it up to about 135 as indicated on the speedo. Prolly around 125ish actual. It had an Injen CAI. Boy did that take forever...

i thought our cars were redline limited?? so far i've only dared getting it up to 100. too afraid i will get nailed by a cop and hauled to jail.

Best i've done is about 105, on a really really back road in my hometown on the way to a wedding. Like kpabap said though, it took a long time to get there.

a stock P5 is actually drag limited. A while ago I took the time to find the physical top speed of the car on stock tires (195/50/16). At 7200 RPM (fuel cut) in 5th gear, the top speed of the car is around 170 mph. I'll try to find my post about it.

So I was wrong... I found my post and here is the info:

Ok everyone...I've been trying to figure this out for a while...some people were talking about the TOP speed for the MP5. Some were asking if a turbo will increase TOP speed. Those who said yes...well, are wrong. Your TOP speed is determined by your transmission and your final gear ratios. I took the time to dig up some old math computations to figure out the actual top speed of the MP5. This is taking into assumption you're running the stock 195/50/16 tires and the stock GM15-R tranny. Now try to keep up:

Top speed = R / T * C
R = RPM
T = Tranny ratio
C = Circumference of your tire

R = 7200 rpm (rotation per minute)
T = .755 (5th gear) * 4.105 (final gear) = 3.099
C = (((195mm * .50) / 10 / 2.54) + 16in) * pi = 62.293 in = 5.191 ft

You may wonder where these numbers are coming from
195mm is the width of the tire
.50 is the aspect ratio, which is the relationship between the tire's height and it's width
/ 10 is to convert from mm to cm
/ 2.54 is to convert from cm to in
16 is the size of the rim
the total Diameter of the tire is 19.838 in
using the formula C = D pi

R / T = 2330.097 RPM (at the wheels) * 60 min = 139,805 RPH (at the wheels)

Top speed = 139,805 RPH * 5.191 ft = 725,727.755 ft/hr = 137.4 mph

"But there's the picture of the guy going 140 mph. What about that?!"

Here's your answer. THEY CAN BE INNACURATE.

I'm sorry to say that he probably wasn't doing 140 mph.
I hope this clarifies some misconceptions about top speed.

Feel free to question, double check, etc.
Now, you can change your top speed by changing your tires (bigger tires = larger circumference = higher top speed).

I can also validate the claim about innacurate speedo/odo. When I was running stock rims my speedo speed and actual speed were about 5mph off. I was going slower than my speedometer was telling me.

Stock save for a Ractive SRI. Actually got a bit faster, but I was coming up on some traffic.

I got her up to 115 (verified by GPS) and 120 (not verified). The 120 was down hill.

It is very very smooth at high speed.

'02 ES w/ only the CAI and Cat back - hit 125 fairly fast and was still gaining when I saw the CHP in the distance :eek: and had to kill the brakes in order to exit the fwy before getting to him..... but it felt like I could have gotten 130 out of it

Oh, I forgot, that's WITH a yakima rack on, too. On fairly level ground, it just took awhile to get there especially once you shift to 5th. Only time I've really wound it up thatmuch, middle of the week, long bit of empty road, I had my camera close at hand, figured whynot.

Also had good impressions of the car at speed. Handled it well. Very stable, controllable, etc. My old 91civic si used to feel kinda nervous and twitchy up in the triple digits.

Can someone tell me which proteges after '99 have governors, and which do not? And does is the 3 governed? It would seem to make more sense modifying an ungoverned car then with if you want a higher top speed.
