Protege5 Production #?

I got 2002.5 #176617. Hey FlannelBoy711 r cars were probably in Mazda's parking lot at the same time! Hehe.

If this formula is right then I have a '03 production number 11,171. Not sure if I did it right though. My vin ends in 111172 so if someone else can check my math I'd apreciate it.

So they count down when they do serial numbers? Wouldn't that mean I would have a 2003.5 if my production number is so close to the end? I didn't get a sub with my car. I thought all 2003.5 cars came with a sub.

Maybe you have to add the 03 number to the last production number of the 02's don't know, just guessing. Still that would mean that my car is an 03.5 and i didn't get a sub. What else can i do to tell if I have an 03.5 without the window sticker?

"02 Protege5
From VIN JM1BJ24**2*440775 to JM1BJ24**2*551281, go to STEP 3
From VIN JM1BJ24**2*551282 to JM1BJ24**2*641000, go to STEP 4

03 Protege / 03 Protege5
From VIN JM1BJ2***3*100001 to JM1BJ2***3*143365, go to STEP 4"

according to some miata vin places the first digit of the production number is the model year.

thus it may be likley that the 4XXXXX series is the 2000 series, the 5XXXXX is the 2002.5, and the 1XXXXX is the 2003. The XXXXX is your hypothetical "production number" for that specific years model run, if this is how they are numbered.

i would like to explain why the 2002 model is such a high number, and i can only guess is that the protege dx, es, and lx were 1, 2 and 3, while in 2003 they classified the p5 as a separate model apart from the protege sedan.

so if i were 548001 i would be the 48001 car produced in that model run.

this is purely speculation, but im quite sure your math (in the first post) is very flawed, and this at least makes much more sense

Welp, I can safely assume that the VIN's are randomized, now; I bought the first P5 to hit the lots over here in NH, yet I have a rather high VIN... uclap5's theory would be a little off, too, as I have a 2002, no funky '02.5 features, yet mine starts in the 5XXXXX range. Who knows what they did!

To answer this:

Check TheMAN's FAQ, it shows you how to read the VIN

go to:
http://web2.airmail.net/theman/protegefaq/
click on "model info", it's the first thing there

it states:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Series numbers:
3rd generations: 100001-400000: 1999-2000 models
400001-600000: 2001-2002 models

Series & Car # (rolls to 100001 every new generation)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I started saying that there's no real way to check '03s #s because they pool them together with Proteges. But since they mention all the '02 Protege5s especifically having a range of 440775 - 641000 I would assume that those were ALL the '02 Protege5s produced, doesn't that make sense? If the numbers are in order of production then I think 02 P5s could get their order correctly from the VIN. Sorry 03s :p

If the numbers are truly randomized then finding your actual order of production with the VIN wouldn't work - although I wouldn't see why they would print out VINs in order and then randomly put them on cars - doesn't seem to make sense that they would go out of their way to disorganize record keeping.

This is all a "theory", so I'm just looking for other people's insight on this to see if it would make sense.

I don't think you can make that assumption, just like I can't make mine.

But, that said, you can't say that just because your P5 was one of the first in NH that it was one of the first in NA. They could've started distributing them starting on the west coast for all we know, and finish in NH. If you have one in the 5XXXXX range it could still put you in the middle or end of the production of 2002s, assuming that half were 02s and the other were 02.5s.

The range is 440775 - 641000, so you could very well still be an 02 if 02.5s were only made halfway through that.

Oh, we definitly got them last, for sure. 'Cept maybe Maine. Just seems that the number's pretty high, to me, but who knows. Ahh, well. =)

Also, why does everyone bash on Honda's? Oh wait it's cause they drive by you when your car is broken down on the side of the road. Sorry but I am starting to get upset about all the negatives towards a very good car.
HAHAHAHA! Just because a car is reliable doesnt make it a good car. I personally hate hondas because many people give them a bad rep by making them ugly and many companies support that. But thats not all! They're engines make bad torque, and I LOVE torque!!! and the third main reason I dont like Hondas? Everyone and their mother, brother, daughter, sister, son, dad, and dog own one. It would drive me insane to have to figure out which car is mine every time I walk out of a store or movie or MY HOUSE! Hondas=(loser)

I have an early 2k2 also. Got mine in oct 01' I wonder if there are factory prefix ids with the production # embedded, definately back from the grave :D
