Project Pay2Play: My Eunos Cosmo has arrived!

yep I read it somewhere to. Basically in power mode, the throttle has a higher resolution. Thus not making the throttle open more or less, but increasing the sample points between position a and a+1.

It *seems* that way on my Cosmo. But perhaps I am imagining things!

Again, i'm not an expert so, maybe Dave could chime in on this. He seems to know more about Cosmo than I.

As shown in the posted pics of the gear change points.

The "Power" mode causes the transmission change points to change plus the gear is more likely to change down for a certain TPS percentage.

I'm so accustomed to running in "Power" mode that recently I swapped back to normal mode as a test & simply hated it. Changed too early, lacked response.... Yuk.

May remove the "Power" light on the dash as thats the new "Normal" for me............(blah)(blah)(blah)

Looks great Antoine

Thanks man! :D

HID's - I used a kit that is plug and play. I'm not sure how they wired yours.. but mine, I was able to run the wires like stock and didn't have to modified my headlight cap.

Power mode: I now run the Cosmo in Power mode ONLY. And I use the Hold button quiet often. I think its better for the engine. Also, I now use all 9 plugs.

Best way to get rid of heat is to remove cats. If that's not an option (due to emission), than I would check under the car and see if added shielding will help. I know people use Gold foils to reflect heat vs coating... When someone say coating, i think of ceramic coating, but that requires pulling things out and sending them off..

Thanks for the input, Phil!

HID: I went for what had the best quality rep here in Japan which meant a universal kit and custom install...What sort of kit did you go with...Company/Brand? How is it working out for you?

Power mode: I hear ya...I've been running in "Power" mode 98% percent of the time...I'm starting to use the "HOLD" feature more as well...If you listen...The 20B speaks to you and it says...MORE REVS!

Heat / Cats: Thanks for the tip...I'm going to look into Gold Foil as a possible remedy for heat buildup...(thumb)

Funny you should say that. Did a run from a Sydney satellite city last SUN. Cruised on 140km/h. Had a squirt with a guy in some big SUV thinking he was faster.......(burnout) And remarkably the engine was purring like a kitten once home. 3300rpm in 4th for extended periods cleans out the insides quite well.

Curious on your reference to using "power" mode as this only alters the Auto-trans computer program meaning higher change points going up through the gears.

Nice to learn "your" temps. Figure they must be similar on the rest of ours too.

Blitz EBC's are probably the best choice for the rotary twins. Whats your "Warning" sounder set to..?? Mines at 1.0-Bar Goes off on a moist cold night sometimes. Unfamiliar noise panics me instantly thinking the Radar detector just picked up a new frequency.......lol

Heat. These things have always been problematic with heat on the feet. WELCOME TO ROTARIES. Mine was substantially reduced when the Pre-Cat was removed & the front part of the exhaust was ceramic coated.

REgards

Awesome input, Dave...Thanks! (2thumbs)

Temps...It would be interesting to see what sort of temps everyone else is running...I'm happy to report mine...Hope they are healthy!

Blitz EBC...I checked my boost stats after my last post and I didn't pass my last/current peak (13.3psi / .91bar) which is a good thing...As for my "WARNING" alarm, I have to double check...Been a while since I set it! :p

Heat..."Mine was substantially reduced when the Pre-Cat was removed & the front part of the exhaust was ceramic coated."...Thanks for the info...I will keep your setup in mind when I tackle the exhaust!

Nice update Antoine, always nice to see a Cosmo getting around :)

Yeah I thought the 20B was not the main source of heat. I had assumed it was exhaust related. Good to know its the CATs as I'm planning to get mine reworked in the near future.

I thought the 'power' mode locked out the final overdrive gear, made throttle response better and shifted at different RPM. I don't use powah mode very often. Canberra is mostly 80km/h and 60km/h zones. The power button is not so useful for me.

So how many long trips have you guys done in your Cosmo?

Thanks for posting your input...It's very much appreciated! (2thumbs)

Thanks to everyones input...We know that the CATS & Exhaust cause heat to build up under the car...I hope that I can find a solid solution and still pass Japanese emissions / street regulations.

Power Mode...I hear ya but isn't it a good idea to use "Power" mode even in low speed / traffic situations to keep the revs a bit higher and a bit healthier...Of course this affects MPG but that's part of 20B/Cosmo ownership!

Long Trips...Good question...The longest trip I've done so far is to Hiroshima and back...Which is about 4 hours one way...How about you guys? :D

I've taken my Cosmo to AL to NC to AL, which is about 500-600 miles... then drove on US129, Skyway, etc. and drove back home.

I'm not sure if putting in 'POWER' mode actually increase throttle.. If so, I haven't noticed. I do notice that it shifts at higher RPM. But I like to get the RPM up at least once when I'm driving. So, i tend to put it on "HOLD" to red line.

What sort of RPMs where you at during the trip?

I read that power switches something on i forgot the name of it, it's in the top section of the gearbox. bad terminology.
and it definitely increases throttle response, doubles the amount of load points on the accelerator pedal. thats what i saw in a diagram. meaning its not a simply wire based?
I start and cruise in normal and press power button whenever i'm not doing a constant speed or at lights.
longest drive was around 13+ hours over 1000k's the day i bought it. Wondering why I hadnt taken the coastal route.
I often do day trips of around 5+ hours. on the way home i start going real easy on it thinking seals mite start to wear due to prolonged heat.
never bored in the car. seems to have a presence. also tends to make other people speed.

finally sent off the best motoring review.
i want opinions is the track semi-wet? it's definitely foggy. ripple strips look wet.
pretty good laptime for conditions, and being auto.
http://www.fastestlaps.com/track3.html want to post there.
lots of sliding in that car, compared to other cars laps Iv seen. smooth weight shifts. first time i'v seen a cosmo at opposite lock.
i cant upload my internet disconnects every 10 mins. it's in Antoine's hands.

13+ hours! 5+ hours! Now that's a road trip! Very happy to hear that you're never bored in the car and that it has a "presence" in your neck of the woods...I feel the same way and have had a similar experience here in Japan...Most new cars DO NOT have a presence...The Eunos Cosmo was DESIGNED to have one and OHHH Does It! ;)

Thanks for uploading the Best Motoring Vid...A real RARE FIND:

Best Motoring Eunos Cosmo Vid (RARE)!

these photo's are great. often the car looks long

Thanks and I agree...It looks long because IT IS long...I've parked next to a full size Lexus/Toyota sedan and my EC was still a bit longer...Despite that...Feels "normal" to me when in the driver's seat...:D

Dave, Thanks for clarifying that.

Fantastic work there Antoine, truely amazing looking car!

Has there been any updates on the LED Cosmo sideskirt badge?

Thanks for the kind feedback...As for the Custom OLED Badge Project...While there was a lot of progress made in the FALL of '09...The project is currently on hold...I will be sure to post an UPDATE ASAP!

Quick question, how hard is it to find windows for the cosmo there in japan?

Hard...I believe there are only two options at this point...Salvage glass off a wrecked Eunos Cosmo OR have it custom made & fitted...Not sure if Mazda has anymore EC windows/glass in stock...Unlikely...:(

Sorry to my fellow Eunos Cosmo Enthusiasts for my lack of updates...I haven't had much time to dedicate to my EC and this thread! :(

That SAID...I'm back with a vid and some pics! (woowoo)

Pics from Direct from Japan: Mazda / Rotary Tuning Fair 2009!:

Back in November when I went to the Mazda / Rotary Fair, I happen to meet an RX-8 Club that had seen my http://youtube.com/Mazdas247 vids and they invited me to do a nearby mountain run...Which turned out to be the REAL DEAL...Steep angles...Uber Sharp Bends...This was the first time I had really attempted to "tackle" a mountain in the EC and MAN WAS IT FUN!

While the RX-8s could whip around the bends with ease...My EC required a bit more "man handling" yet I must admit...I was VERY impressed with my EC's ability to handle the curves and accelerate or decelerate on demand...I'm sure with upgraded brakes and proper suspension (in addition to strut bracing front & rear), you could really take on the mountain with confidence and easily keep up with any RX-8...(drive)

Here are a few pics from the rest stop near the top of the mountain...:D

Well that's it for now...Thanks for checking out my latest update! :D

The longest trip I've done in the Cosmo was from Canberra, to Melbourne via the mountains and coast. About 1000km or so. I'll add a link to google maps for reference.

I also got the rest of my exhaust finished. All 3 cats were removed and replaced with 1 high flow cat. The 'pre' cat looks just like the other two cats, but smaller. I probably saved about 20kg in weight, the old system was MUCH heavier.

In cabin temps are much less. Whilst my left foot did get warm after 7 hours of driving, the gear box/gear leaver was not hot or warm. Much less use of the aircon as a result.

So I fully recommend getting the factory cats replaced with something more efficient. Even if you keep the cat back exhaust as is.

Route I took with the Cosmo over xmas. It was awesome.

(ohsnap!) 1000km! I would love to do an uber road trip some day...Farthest I've been so far is to Hiroshima which took about 4 hours or so...High speed cruising in the EC really is BLISS...:D

Thanks for the "cat" info...Excellent advice and a mod that I really want to do now...There are several highflow cat options in Japan...Even one made for the EC but it's INSANELY EXPENSIVE!

*Must admit though...It's beautiful...Looks like a sculpture!

From http://www.stardust-factory.com/ *Look under "Shopping"

They are asking from around $2,400 to $2,800 (U.S) for this badboy and I'm not even sure it's really street legal!?

I heard that in Japan you have to get highflow / non-factory cats tested & certified for street use which can be very expensive...I haven't confirmed this information yet but I will when I'm ready to upgrade my exhaust setup.

Another "universal" option might be this lil' badboy from SARD:

Looks to be a very high quality unit but I have no idea if it's able to handle a rotary engine and if it won't throw any codes etc...Hmm...

Oh and check this out...Picked it up a car show...:p

I would be cautious about running cats that are not made for rotary engines.. especially 20B... Most I've seen for piston engine cars will get destroyed in matter of a year or so (pending miles).

Regarding to the one you posted, Its definitely a nice piece. Also its looks to be metalite cats. Which is what I have for my FDs. So, do you guys have to pass emission or something every year? I don't have a cat and it does not throw codes. Only code I saw was the exhaust temp code but I just plug the sensor and its fine.

Where I live, Canberra Australia, we don't need to get the car inspected every year.

What can happen is a random inspection car pulling you over and if they think your car needs a more detailed look, they book you in at the inspection station. They chase cars with fart cans.

So technically you can run without a cat, but depending on when you car was made it may or may not be illegal. Whenever the local law came into effect. So a series 1 RX7 I don't think needs a cat, not sure about that though.

I expect my car is now producing less pollution in its current modified form. Based on my guess the original equipment cats were not working any more.

However, if you do some hard core modifications, like an engine swap (smaller or larger than stock), then you need to visit an engineer and they need to certify it is road safe.

As for codes, my exhaust mechanic just plugged the temp sensors into the new equipment. Everything has been running REALLY well. I expect a slightly larger diameter pipe will alter what the temp sensors see. But logically I think that is going to be LESS as the hole thing soaks less heat.

Note I am running stock ECU and stock boost. no engine mods at all.

The Cosmo is also not LOUD. The hondas around here with fart cans are louder. I'm sure the 20B could be made much louder. But I am not chasing 1500hp so a 3inch system from start to finish is plenty. Well plenty for what I am doing. It does sound awesome :)

I'll have to get hold of a video recorder and record some clips and post on utube.

It's even easier to work out in the UK

if your car is registered pre Sept 1992 it does not need to have a catalytic convertor,, or an emmission test,, happy days

Dam thats nice, all my cars have ben 1990-, but here in Puerto Rico u can make some tricks to have like a circuit race car legally in streets :D (detect)

Damn that dual cat setup looks like a work of art, comes with the price tag of art work too!!!

Regarding CATs on rotaries.
Iv found that the normal run of the mill high flow (i think they are ceramic based) lasted me about a year before it started to deteriorate and rattle.

Replaced with a metal substrate hi flow cat and its lasted ever since. Been about 2 years and still going strong. these go for around $500AUD.
So as long as its a metal cat (u can see a honey comb looking web of metal inside) it should be fine for many years. But be aware these are designed with high heat and high flow in mind rather than emmisions.
But even a factory cosmo would most likley fail most standard emmisions test, so i think the CAT is the least of your worries.

Thanks for the info, Phil! I read something similar in this Book I recently picked up from Amazon...Good Basic Info for any Rotary Enthusiast! (thumb)

As for emissions, I've got to pass it every two years otherwise I can't get the proper documentation which means my Cosmo wouldn't be "Street Legal" anymore...:(

I'll have to get hold of a video recorder and record some clips and post on utube.

Thanks for the info...Lucky you!!! :p

As for Vids...YES PLEASE! :D

lol "Happy Days"...Seems I'm the only EC Owner here who has to deal with such strict emission regulations...:(

Interesting...Like in the U.S....Pre 1973? You can basically drive ANYTHING as long as it has lights, turning signals and a license plate...lol...Just look at Jay Leno! ;)

I had a recent chat with my Mazda Dealer Friend and he said my CAT is fine for now and that the important point about changing/upgrading the CAT in Japan is that...Whatever type it is...IT MUST PASS THE TEST!

So the plan now is to hold off until I NEED A NEW CAT and research possible solutions in the meantime...The only issue I have with my current CAT is that it seems to produce quite a bit of heat after long drives which I could do without...It's definitely tolerable and even nice in the winter but not very useful in the summer.

Thanks for the info! (thumb)
