Project Pay2Play: My Eunos Cosmo has arrived!

Haha...Yeah...I'm WAY overdue for an update...Sorry about that...I've got some juicy stuff to post but I'm waiting to get my Cosmo back...It's still at the Dealer in between upgrades...I really want to take it on an upcoming super special road trip this weekend!

Updates on the way...Stay tuned! :D

Time for a long overdue UPDATE!

I'll finally be picking up the Cosmo today because I've got a very special trip planned for the next 3 days...I'll be cruising in the Cosmo to Hiroshima to see the sites and take an official Mazda tour of their museum and production line! (rockon)

Here are some recent pics of Pay2Play taken in Kyoto...Enjoy...:)

On the upgrade front...Project Pay2Play is now HID EQUIPPED! (woowoo)

I'm going to see the Cosmo for the first time with the HID system fully installed today and my upcoming trip will be a great time to test them out...Can't wait! (2thumbs)

On a related note...I shot the above pic with the iPhone while at my Friendly Mazda Dealer below...

Here is a shot of the Eunos Cosmo "parts car" that has a blown 20B...Sad sight but at least some of its parts may take on a new life in my Cosmo...:D

Stay tuned for more and thanks for taking a look! :D

That's sweet that you're going to the Mazda assembly plant! The Protege's were made in Hiroshima, right?

Looking good Antoine!

I also just installed my HIDs... 8000K. Looks brighter :)

Thanks Phil!

Cool...Have you posted up some pics of the HIDs in action yet?

So nice and so clean!

Do you have more info on HIDs? I see it says three stage balast?

Thanks man...I do have more info...Posted below! :D

Yup...The Pros were mainly built in Hiroshima...(2thumbs)

Well I'm back from Hiroshima and had a great time...Cruising over there in the Cosmo, seeing the sites and visiting the Mazda Museum (official news thread coming VERY SOON with TONS of PICS ;) )!

Here are a few pics of the Cosmo parked in a several locals around Hiroshima...:)

Near the "Mazda ZOOM ZOOM Stadium"...

Peep the "Shinkansen" (Japanese Bullet Train) zooming by...

At the Yamato Museum...

Here's a lil' sneak peak of Mazda HQ...

The day before heading out to Hiroshima, I picked up the Cosmo from my friendly Mazda Dealer and snapped a quick pic via the iPhone with the HIDs in action...

Here's the lowdown on the HID setup...

* Hard Set @ 35W / 6600K

* "TS" Three Stage system has NOT been installed due to the fact that there is no more room to snake the wires through the stock firewall passages...The addition of the DEFI goodies and BLITZ EBC have maxed out all the available wiring passages...:(

* The "TS" Three Stage system is currently on HOLD until another solution can be found or I may have to create a new passage..?

* Luckily, 35W is the overall most useful power setting and provides plenty of lighting power...I may just keep the current setup...We'll see...:)

* Hi & Lo Beam work seamlessly with the new HID system...Without the "TS" Three Stage system...There are ZERO additional switches to mount...Works through the factory controls.

CONCERNS...

The install was a custom job via an extra pair of Cosmo headlights saving my original ones in good condition...

* I hope they don't start fogging up!

* Alignment...I think the right one is slightly off...Going to bring it in to make sure everything is kosher.

Cruising Performance...

The highway / fast lane was pretty much clear for most of the way to and back from Hiroshima...

* I was able to maintain a good pace for hours and the 20B ran flawlessly the entire time!

* Ran in "POWER" mode the entire way to keep the revs higher and the 20B happy...(rockon)

* Average temp was 83 ~ 86*c for OIL (highway) & 65 ~ 70*c for WATER (highway)...I have noticed that anytime I charge up an incline the temp starts to rise quickly yet remains within a healthy range.

* Boost...I have to check my BLITZ EBC for the latest peak boost level...I heard the EBC start beeping (warning) when I was passing and didn't have my eyes on the boost gauge...I've probably reached a new boost spike level...That said...I've been getting better at keeping the boost in check...As soon as I realized the boost was spiking...I immediately got off it...Eventually, I'd like to upgrade the stock turbos to higher performance higher flow versions that can handle a lot more boost...The good news is with my current setup...RESPONSE IS OFF THE HOOK! (laugh)

New Ideas & Thoughts...

I noticed after several road trips with the Cosmo that the 20B produces A LOT of heat and it starts to heat up the interior cabin over sustained periods of driving...Even though the 20B maybe running a consistent healthy temp, the residual heat starts to radiate into the interior and in summer and fall/spring...You can definitely feel it.

* Someday I would like to customize the interior and have some sort of sound & heat insulation put in wherever possible / most beneficial.

* Look into coating options to deflect heat out and away from the interior.

* Get the Cosmo weighed and find out the current front & rear weight ratio

* Get a used rear deck and modify it for the OKUYAMA rear strut bar saving the original deck in stock form...I've already got the front strut bar installed and it has made a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE...I'm anxious about the possible benefits of having the rear one installed as well...Sooner than originally planned! Though I'm not sure if the rear seat belts will have to be removed in order to mount the rear strut bar..?

I believe that's it for now...Got another event to attend coming up real soon...;)

HID's - I used a kit that is plug and play. I'm not sure how they wired yours.. but mine, I was able to run the wires like stock and didn't have to modified my headlight cap.

Power mode: I now run the Cosmo in Power mode ONLY. And I use the Hold button quiet often. I think its better for the engine. Also, I now use all 9 plugs.

Best way to get rid of heat is to remove cats. If that's not an option (due to emission), than I would check under the car and see if added shielding will help. I know people use Gold foils to reflect heat vs coating... When someone say coating, i think of ceramic coating, but that requires pulling things out and sending them off..

Funny you should say that. Did a run from a Sydney satellite city last SUN. Cruised on 140km/h. Had a squirt with a guy in some big SUV thinking he was faster.......(burnout) And remarkably the engine was purring like a kitten once home. 3300rpm in 4th for extended periods cleans out the insides quite well.

Curious on your reference to using "power" mode as this only alters the Auto-trans computer program meaning higher change points going up through the gears.

Nice to learn "your" temps. Figure they must be similar on the rest of ours too.

Blitz EBC's are probably the best choice for the rotary twins. Whats your "Warning" sounder set to..?? Mines at 1.0-Bar Goes off on a moist cold night sometimes. Unfamiliar noise panics me instantly thinking the Radar detector just picked up a new frequency.......lol

Heat. These things have always been problematic with heat on the feet. WELCOME TO ROTARIES. Mine was substantially reduced when the Pre-Cat was removed & the front part of the exhaust was ceramic coated.

Nice update Antoine, always nice to see a Cosmo getting around :)

Yeah I thought the 20B was not the main source of heat. I had assumed it was exhaust related. Good to know its the CATs as I'm planning to get mine reworked in the near future.

I thought the 'power' mode locked out the final overdrive gear, made throttle response better and shifted at different RPM. I don't use powah mode very often. Canberra is mostly 80km/h and 60km/h zones. The power button is not so useful for me.

So how many long trips have you guys done in your Cosmo?

I've taken my Cosmo to AL to NC to AL, which is about 500-600 miles... then drove on US129, Skyway, etc. and drove back home.

I'm not sure if putting in 'POWER' mode actually increase throttle.. If so, I haven't noticed. I do notice that it shifts at higher RPM. But I like to get the RPM up at least once when I'm driving. So, i tend to put it on "HOLD" to red line.

I read that power switches something on i forgot the name of it, it's in the top section of the gearbox. bad terminology.
and it definitely increases throttle response, doubles the amount of load points on the accelerator pedal. thats what i saw in a diagram. meaning its not a simply wire based?
I start and cruise in normal and press power button whenever i'm not doing a constant speed or at lights.
longest drive was around 13+ hours over 1000k's the day i bought it. Wondering why I hadnt taken the coastal route.
I often do day trips of around 5+ hours. on the way home i start going real easy on it thinking seals mite start to wear due to prolonged heat.
never bored in the car. seems to have a presence. also tends to make other people speed.

finally sent off the best motoring review.
i want opinions is the track semi-wet? it's definitely foggy. ripple strips look wet.
pretty good laptime for conditions, and being auto.
http://www.fastestlaps.com/track3.html want to post there.
lots of sliding in that car, compared to other cars laps Iv seen. smooth weight shifts. first time i'v seen a cosmo at opposite lock.
i cant upload my internet disconnects every 10 mins. it's in Antoine's hands.

So are you saying its doubling the TPS sensor reading? Its hard to believe its doubling it.

I know more about MAP based ECU vs MAF, but I'm trying to picture how it will increase better throttle response. As if you mash down your pedal to the ground, the TPS will only read up to a point and not exceed beyond its opening, ie if 100% opening, it can't go beyond 100..
Also, there are several ways to so called increase throttle response, but I'm trying to picture how else this button will make a difference. One way is to lean out and increase timing, but that gets bit dangerous.

Again, i'm not an expert so, maybe Dave could chime in on this. He seems to know more about Cosmo than I.

yes the throttle position sensor. I was sure it was in the workshop manual?? but cant find what I was looking for. numbers were from 8 too 14 i believe.
simply more precision.

no extra over 100% just more precision inbetween. I'm begining to doubt myself i looked through the manual but can't find it.
have to print off all 613 pages and go through it slowly.
this is the basic diagrams of the gear modes. on the y axis is the throttle position.
now imagine that is 8 points. in the diagram i think i saw in power mode there was 14 points on the y axis. it specified this feature with 2 small images side by side.
i cant find it, it's a strange thing to imagine...
until i find it just disgard what i have said.
