Oil change

I don't drive my CX-5 that often. Had it for about 4 months and only about 1500 miles on it. Any advice on when I should have my first oil change? Ive read that the first oil change should be relatively early to clean out the new engine. Any thoughts? Please and thank you.

Are you using the OCI feature? If not, I would change it out at 6 months and then begin using the OCI. Mostly to maintain warranty.

If you drive less you should enable oil life monitor to take advantage of Schedule 1, Flexible Maintenance on oil change. With Flexible OCI you can go up to 10,000 miles or 12 months for you oil change. It'll keep your new car and power train warranty valid. Go to Maintenance app and change the Oil Change to Flexible and it'll show % of you oil life instead of a fixed time and mileage. I suggest you reset it to flexible right now, and wait for 5,000 miles or 12 months, and make your first oil change even if your oil life may still show 60%. Once the oil gets changed, make sure to reset Flexible oil change to 100%. Another thing worth to mention is make sure your dealer is using Mazda moly oil and pay extra for it as using Flexible OCI requires Mazda moly oil for more accurate calculation.

if you don't feel comfortable to wait until 5,000 miles or 12 months, and want to change oil early, make sure to use Mazda moly oil too as it probably is the factory fill with very high moly content. And turn on the oil life monitor after the oil change.

If you turn on oil life monitor with flexible OCI, it can be up to 12 months. This is Mazda approved Schedule 1 maintenance schedule to maximize oil life and reduce oil waste. There're many CX-5 owners drive only 5,000 miles or less per year, once a year oil change based on "Oil change due" message from oil life monitor should be sufficient with good Mazda moly oil.

From the experience of our CX-5, the oil life was at 30% for 8 months and 5,073 miles since new and I did my first oil change. Currently at 10,156 miles, almost 6 months after the oil change, the oil life is at 60%. I usually won't wait for "Oil change due" message to change oil, but use my judgement and my time frame changing oil a little earlier than oil life monitor indicated. 7,500 miles or 12 months is my bottom line.

We are in that category, even less than 1,200 per month. But retired and plan on several long distance trips per year where the CX 5 will work well for us. Hate to say it, but sort of like the boat and RV people I guess. Although the car is in the garage when not in use.

Many people like to change the initial oil fill early to get rid of all the possible break-in debris. Most think it is not necessary in modern cars (like the manufacturer - in this case Mazda). So a 6 month change gets you back to to the dealer to deal with any questions or little issues you may have. And get rid of any oil gremlins you might be concerned about. The off to the OCI. That's my plan, as I do obsess about gremlins much too often. Mark Twain said most of the stuff he worried about never happened.

tne factory fill could definitely make it to the recommended OCI. I wouldn't worry about leaving it in there too long.

You won't have any issues going the full distance, but I personally like to drop the first oil a little early and replace it with more OE oil just to help remove break-in metals at around 1,000 miles. I did this on my Mazda 6, then again at 5,000, then went the full 7,500 miles between changes. Keep in mind the OE Mazda with Moly 0W-20 is a "thin for 20" oil that does tend to work well but can burn off, so you might notice some oil consumption while the engine breaks in. After 15,000 miles or so I switched to a thicker Mobil 1 0W-20 Extended Performance and my oil consumption disappeared.

Thanks to the recommendations here, I decided to switch to OCI. Only 400 mi on the car now. My target is 5000 mi . Had a tuff time figuring out how to do the switch. Past post in another thread said push the start button 2 times without pushing the brake. All the start up alerts will show on the dash. Then you can go into aps and change the interval. You start from zero so you lose your previous mileage on the oil.

So your CX-5 doesn't have infotainment screen so that you could select Apps directly from screen? Yeah losing 400 miles of oil life is not a big deal.
