2002 Protege 5...Blue
I'm a newbie looking for a primer on basic modifications I can do to my P5 I just purchased. I'ved owned mostly american for 20 years and picked up the protege over the focus svt mainly due to value and price. I was leaning towards the focus because my money-pit SHO acually handled well and was relatively quick for its size.

The Protege is a great car! But would like a few more hp. What are the basic mods that can be made? How many hp can I realisticly squeeze out of this engine before boost?

Any help is appreciated!

So the basic mods are intake and exhaust and if I read correctly you got 16hp out of those two mods?

Okay, what about bolt on turbo?

Thanks!
That ~16 hp includes a header too, which removed the 1st catalytic converter (the one in the front of the engine). So yeah, most people around here give up on staying N/A pretty quick (but not me, Im stubborn :).

Good luck no matter what mods you decide. One thing to avoid though, is nitrous. I dont have experience with it, but there have been quite a few problems with it in our engines. Check out that forum for more info.

This question has still not been answered fully as Wagner has just come out with cams and a new ECU. Who knows with those and h/i/e, a port and polish, some other little stuff?????

luckily, the guy said without a turbo kit.
:P

header
intake (injen, ractive, etc...)
exhaust
jspec/MS intake cams.
jspec/MS exhaust cams (if you can find them)

Those are pretty easy mods to toss on.. get probably 20+hp with all of them (don't know how much the i/e cams will give you)

These cams suck save up and get the wagner motorsport stage II or Stage III cams.

sorry just a pet peeve. but on our cars it is only a header and not headers, we only have two cams. so its intake CAM and exhaust CAM...which, as ghetto said, are just about useless and good for about 3-4whp my guess

Catback Sound

Okay, app. 20 whp with intake header and exhaust. Thats a good start I guess. My goal is to pass a little stronger and handle the NoCal hills a little better with the Auto. Auto?!

What's the Catback sound like? Rumble is cool but a braaap ain't my thing. Do silencers kill hp?

Thanks for the dyno info scorch. I'm guessing you didn't check whp before the intake and exhaust mods? And if I got this right whp is about 80% bhp?

PS, the more I drive this car the more I like it and the greater value it seems to be, particularly used, but I don't see many used.

Today, I dream bolt on turbo. Today, the reallity is budget street mods.

My car definitely feels stronger than stock. And quite a bit louder. It is a growl though, not a buzzy loud. Not yet anyway, we'll see what it sounds like once I remove my remaining cat.

Nope, I didnt dyno before the intake and exhaust. I couldnt find a dyno in my area until afterwards.

Well, stick around and let us all know what you end up doing. And, if you can afford it, do a baseline dyno before any mods, and one after each major mod.

CAI, CARB and P5

Learing more about this mod business I ferget I have CA smog to deal with next year. AEM manufactures only the short intake for the P5. Anyone know of a good CAI that CARB certified?
