New Wheels!

ohhh

your still on the bad WGA...I thought you had fixed it thats why I was saying check your piping haha....yes, your running rich because of your wastegate (thumb)

the 3k fuel cut it definately because of the vacuum lines...and the 5-6k one is the wastegate, at least thats where mine had been fuel cutting with the bad WGA

I didnt know you had MP3Architect's old msp! nice, glad to hear the new owner got on the forums as well (thumb)

and for James... where did you have the turbo timer wired up, i should be getting my GReddy full auto turbo timer in sometime this week. I have never installed one before.

never installed the turbo timer. had it in the box of googies since i bought the car...just couldn't ever figure it out. after a while i just got used to waitin a minute after geting everywhere for the cool down.

ehh, ill figure it out then, we do stand alone engine management systems at work all the time, i should be able to do a turbo timer.
I was just wondering if you already had connections spliced in or anything

Well...
Good news- I got my boost gauge installed and it looks great
Bad news- It gets up to 12psi before the fuel cuts...(help)

I have heard that the engine can only take 12psi on stock internals!!!!!
How badly has this hurt my engine?
I notice that I have 10-15inHg during cruising, is that normal?

I have only hit that 12psi point a handfull of times, from my estimates, I have been bringing it to 9psi on daily driving.

I got my wastegate in today, ill probably install it tomorow.

you dont want to run over 10psi on these motors without building them up

find the boost controller and turn it down

you want to be seeing 20inHg of vacuum at idle and when you are out of gear and off the gas (dunno about if you are in gear and off the gas)

your hitting fuel cut now for two reasons, 1. too much boost without engine management to stock the ECU from fuel cutting, and 2. the bad wastegate

definately turn that boost down! a lot of people will say its fine but I just dont trust it, Ive seen too many blown motors at 12 psi....run 10 at max, Id say 8-9 safely

I dont think I have a boost controller. If i do where is it?
Im installing my WGA tomorow, should fix the problem.

Do you think i already ruined the engine, or if I fix it it will be fine?

Whats the weak link in this engine? Head gaskets? or what?

no you havent ruined the enigne, what happens is from over boosting the rods snap and blow a hole through the side of the block....you obviously havent done that lol

there is no way you are hitting 12psi without some kind of a boost controller, call the previous owner and ask him about it

Its getting up there because the wastegate is bad and not opening.

James, Do I have a boost controller???

You can reach 12psi if the wastegate is not opening, try removing the vac source to the actuator to find out. Or take my word for it and let the engine survive. Also if the actuator goes bad it can reach 12 or more, people have said 15 even higher.

there is no boost controller on that car. dude....i am pretty damn sure you got something wrong on the boost gauge. do you have something at your work to verify it? i know what 10-12-14psi feels like on proteges as there are plenty in houston/dallas who have ran in these numbers and beyond and ive been in them. that car is slow (ok so yeah its not slow but its not like super damn quick). i am really really pretty damn sure you are not hitting 12 psi. seriously dude. unless the car is all of a sudden driving a LOT faster than it was when you test drove it theres no way.

i drove an mp3 for long enough and that car too. i know how the protege should feel at 6.5 (or whatever) psi. its there mang. no way its pulling that hard. heres how i know....if you can get any sort of grip in first gear in a launch then your not pulling over 10 psi. at 12 psi you shouldn't be able to catch s*** in 1st and chirp 2nd and 3rd easily at WOT.

I installed the WGA today
Getting the C clip on and off is the hardest part.
the wastegate at closed position would not reach the valve, so we put some air in it with a little air blower gun and pinched off the line.

took about 1 and a half hours

the boost gauge was and is working correctly.
I was getting up to 12psi in 2nd and third at 4k+ rpm so my tires were moving fast enough not to spin.

now that the WGA is fixed, it sticks at 6.5-7psi and it drives much better.
NO MORE FUEL CUT!!!!!!
YAY!!!!!!

also, i got my turbo timer in today, so that will be my weekend project either this weekend or next

also i noticed over the last few days that when the car is cold it sounds like an exhaust leak and when it heats up it goes away.
After installing the new WGA i noticed while it was idling that the ehaust mani gasket was leaking and when it heats up, it expands and stops leaking.
I think this is covered under my 100k mile extended warranty, but i will have to look.
