New STF SCCA Class Thread

Anybody done anymore experimenting with pulling the ABS/DSC fuse in the car? I'm curious about results. I may try messing with it myself also.

The single button disables both dsc and traction control, abs stays on until you pull the fuse. Andy I believe pulled the fuse when he was doing dyno's but im not sure as what he actually ran with on his way to the top STF trophy this year...if he kept it in my advice would be not to worry about it, you have to be pretty out of shape to get it to engage.

According to the latest GRM magazine, their project Fiesta benefitted from Andy's advice to pull the stability control fuse. No mention of the ABS fuse. This is the main reason that I was wondering what had given the best results. Maybe Andy can chime in?

The Fiesta has a different setup, w/o a DSC switch. So they pretty much *had* to do this. With the 2, you have the option of simply switching off DSC, and leaving ABS & EBD engaged. Note that for B Spec road racing, the Fiesta gets a modified ABS module. Not legal in STF, but probably the best of all worlds.

looking at getting into the local scca here in el paso for 2013... but shamefully don't know where to start. I've been adding stuff to my 2 just to make it more "fun" to drive, but want to run this coming year. I know there are different classes, but with my mods so far, what class would i fall in and what future additions do you experienced autoxers recommend in order to be legal, and get in the best class. I went on the SCCA website and i think im good to go sor far but chime in if you could. Two things to keep in mind... 1) this is my daily driver, rear seat delete or roll cage is a no go... and 2) if i reflash the ecu thru dynotronics does it disqualify me? Current on the 2 is a Corksport SRI, Cat back exhaust with added downpipe, h&r springs and corksport adjustable shocks are en route, thinking of getting the awr mount, some torsion bars from corksport, and probably their skid plate. wheels and tires later. Thanks guys.

If you're going to autocross, and may I add if you want to be quick, upgraded wheels/tires are a must. Although, learning how to control the car on the all seasons is also a valuable lesson/skill to have. (I don't know the rules for the different classes, just stating general knowledge).

As far as STF you can have:

Coilovers or upgraded springs, adjustable shocks
sway bar upgrades that includes rear torsion bar
lighter seats not less than 25 lbs each, including racks
Intake
Exhaust, still need one cat
headers
smaller battery
lighter wheels 15x7.5 max

ECU reflash BTW what ever happened with your ECU?

Andres

ps. hope did not forget something

Thanks.. so I am good to go with my mods so far right?

What about the awr mount?

My ecu was lost in the mail. Dynotronics has been nice enough to still flash my new ecu. I will send it out next week.

With your mods so far, you are good to go. Definitely look at a motor mount, and get upgraded tires as soon as you can, even if they are on your stock wheels. Tires and seat time are by far the best two things you can do. The only mod that I question is the skid plate; I don't think it's technically legal, but I doubt if anyone who complain about it being there.

This.

You're just getting started. Go out there with what you have, get there early so you can walk to course and meet some cool people, and HAVE FUN. Don't worry about how competitive your times are or what mods could make you faster. Hit some cones, spin out, get your blood pumping, and worry about that other stuff when you decide how much time and money you want to commit. It also takes a fair bit of seat time and exposure to the sport to figure out how you want to mod the car.

seat time

At a local test and tune I pulled 12/44 and at yesterday's event I did a 19/100. The only mod on my Mazda 2 is 15x7 wheels with Yokohama Advan ad08 so I am STF but STF has better pax than HS. This is on top of a 1st place at an event held in the rain.

So yes to seat time!

Nice! Get some other suspension bits in there and get the times even better.

Congrats, thats some good driving!

Thank you. The Mazda2 forces you to make nice arcs because every bit of speed you scrub off is time lost. Without any power on hand conservation of momentum becomes very important. Only seat time and tire wear and a camera and a data logger can help one improve driving skills. At the T&T I sure used a lot of rubber as we had 2 skidpads and 2 times around each before doing slaloms and turns.

I got 10/80 pax last weekend, with stock tires. Corksport adjustable shocks/lowering springs.
Ordered a set of 15x7.5 6uls that are due in May.. In meantime I have decided on a tire. I want to run the dunlop direzza zii, but am torn between 195 vs 205.
My plan is to swap wheels and tires this year, then street on last years race tires.. I know plenty of people who have done this with star specs for years. So i would like a happy medium for autox performance, and then looks/comfort for daily the following year.

From what I gather, that since I will not be running the magic 195 toyo, that i should just bump up to the 205? and the dunlops have a stiffer sidewall so turn in will be largely unaffected? correct me if i'm wrong.

With the stock tires you did well!

I never had a chance to try the 195s when I was really autocrossing on a regular basis, I was on the 205/50 on a set of 15x7 wheels. With a little wider wheel I would think you should be good.
