New STF SCCA Class Thread

4+ seconds!?!? Wow. Congrats Andy, you've got to be psyched about that. Anyone get to try the live feed email links? I never had time.

Good job andy.....now I cant blame my no power car for sucking locally in stf.....damnit!

Congrats to Andy and Ann. You guys proved that the Mazda2 is the car to have for STF, hopefully this inspire more 2's drivers to start taking their cars to the Autocross field. I'll be there next year for sure.

Andres

Andy, Congrats on a huge victory!!

We were stoked here at the shop when we heard!!

Dynotronics is very very pleased to have been able to have worked with you, and we look forward to tweaking the tuning further to see if we can find you more for next season

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. It was a week to remember.

When STF did not get the minimum five entrants to "make" for the Pro Solo Finale, we thought that any chance we had for the overall championship was done, as we'd have to run in the bump class against Mark Daddio. Plus, we'd have to spot him 3 tenths a side since the PAX index doesn't account for the Pro Solo launch. Double-yuck. Somehow, though, we pulled out a couple of magical runs on Sunday morning to get the class win and get into the Super Challenge. First round, we drew Tony Savini who was effectively tied with us for the Overall points lead at that point. Again digging deep, we found enough to get by him by .008 seconds. One more round and we had amassed enough points to gain our third Pro Solo Overall title (only John Ames has done this before) to add to our class championship.

Thursday-Friday for Solo Nats was a lot less stressful, since we were running with our "own kind" in STF. Fun courses and the car performed well. In addition to my championship (three in a row, four total), Ann scored her first podium in an open class. Could gave been 1-2, but she caught a cone on her second run and rain came into play as she sat on the line for her third run on the second day. .063 was the final margin for her.

Big thanks to all of our sponsors and contingency partners

Toyo Tires, for making the magic 195 R1R and providing a HUGE contingency plan that allows us to travel
Mazda Motorsports for a wonderful parts support program and another great contingency plan
Grassroots Motorsports, whose association allows us access to some great testing and development deals
AST Suspension for some killer dampers
Dynotronics for ECU tuning that really works, and working with us to further develop it
Burns Stainless for exhaust parts and consultation
Laivins Race Cars for custom header construction
UpRev for dyno services
Vorshlag for Powerflex and Whiteline bushings (more on this in upcoming GRM)
Roger Beasley Mazda South for a great deal on the car, and support after the sale
JC Auto Spec and Soulspeed for tire mounting

And a shout out to all of the competitors in STF who make the class as much fun as it can be.

Andy , did you get to weight your car at Nationals? Do you have latest dyno numbers after the headers?

Thanks

Andres

PS. Again Great job !!!!!

Congrats Andy, great to hear about this.

Now, would you mind PMing me about info on the header? I would like to get that header, or header design, at some point soon too.

Did not weigh the car at nats since I've weighed it here on my own scales. Right at 2100 lbs. New exhaust is not appreciably lighter than the previous.

I do have dyno #'s, but that's on embargo for the GRM article. Plus, I want to try some more things to see if we can't make it even better.

And as I've said before...this header is not particularly cost-effective since it is a one-off.

Is the shop you went to absolutely apposed to creating another? Cost doesn't matter to me if it is the best header to get for this car.

Not at all. He'll make more. It's just not even close to what makes "value" sense for anybody other than a "whatever it takes" racer. Since ours was a magazine project, we did some deals as part of it.

Shoot me a PM and I can get you hooked up.

if thats the case give john at Hy-Tech Header in Southern california a call, in my opinions they make some of the highest quality manifolds and exhaust systems in the world. If I ever decide start tweaking my car for power hy-tech is first on the list.

Indeed, John makes great stuff. But if it is not an off-the-shelf design, you will wait...and wait...and wait. I had one of his headers on my Civic and also on my K-swapped CRX track car. The first was off-the-shelf and came in an expected timeframe. The second was one he had done before, but took six months to receive after expected timeframes of a third of that. And any custom headermaker is going to need a car and OE components to build from so they need to be local-ish. That's the thing I ran into on this one. Even shipping someone your OE exhaust doesn't get it done, especially in this case as the stock subframe gets in the way of things.

Yeah johns work is incredible but as far as custom systems go its always best when they have the car physically there and a lot of patience. If I ever end up modding my car to the point it needs an exhaust im just going to bite the bullet and have him make me a full exhaust manifold back. I can only imagine what kind of magic he could work on one of these cars.

Some of you were talking about disabling DSC in your cars for events. I have a 2012 Mazda 3 that I just started running in STF, and I want to make sure I have the right procedure for disabling the DSC. What do you guys do to shut yours off? My manual says TC and DSC are able to be shut off separately, but I want to know how that compares to the system in the 2.

Thanks,
Mike

3's are different (had one), hold in button before you start the car and continue holding it in until a few seconds after its started and it turns off tcs and dsc, otherwise if you hit the button when started it just turns off dsc I think...on 2's its all or nothing with the button to my knowledge as there is not a separate light for both like on the 3's.

Sure would be nice if it would work with a single push. I guess as long as it works, it will be fine this way. It just seems silly that there is a procedure in the manual to disable it but no indicator on the dash. I figured surely they would want the driver to know when DSC is off. Oh, and the single button push disables traction control, and that seems to be working fine. I want to do the longer button hold that will disable DSC. If I can't find the answer, I may consult Mazda headquarters.
