Exercise

Nice to hear everyone is trying to get healthy...or stay healthy. I've lost 20 lbs in the past 3 months due to school. I have no time to work out and I'm tired after school. My energy level is so low right now. I went from 6 days a week to maybe 3 and it's killin' me. I spend all day researching, learning, and helping other people get healthy but the irony is my health is deminishing.

And zoomer did you need stabilization surgery or anything? Compression fractures from C-1 to C-7 are serious business.

But difference back then was it was more toned etc. Could run a 1/4 mile around 53-55seconds. Now I'd be lucky to even make it the 1/4 mile

you used to be able to almost beat a p5
:D

I was very skinny as a kid but after I turned 8 I started getting fat, when I turned 13 I lost some weight but i was still chubby. Right now(20) I'm still not lean but I've gained some muscle from going to the gym and right now I'm in the process of getting rid of all that fat, I do martial arts 4 times a week and go to gym 3 times a week to lift weights. I'm about 5'10 and 190lbs, I'm hoping to get down to at least 170-165 and start gaining more muscle from there.

ToBeBackDoc...they did`nt even put my neck in a collar!!! The only thing the morons did was give me 11 staples and some motrin(the so-called military wonder drug). I was telling them about my the massive pain in my neck, as well as the cracking and popping, and they still ingored me!!! It took action from a congress man as well as my divisional officer to get me properly looked at!!

I was sent to Bahrain to get a CAT as well as an MRI, and they sent the results back to the states before I got a chance to check them out myself. Although...a good friend of mine did show me my x-rays, and they were`nt pretty. He said that I was lucky that I was still alive!! Now i`ve got pernament ligament damage and pain to boot!! I`m currently still working w/ V.A. to get a settlement from the navy. My wife(who is a DPT), is pissed off on how the navy is trying to cover-up their mistakes. The only thing is, I can`t do anything as far as treatments go or it will void my settlement!! So, the only thing that I can do now is grin and bare it....and try to take things easy.

I'm about 5'10 and 190lbs
That's a good weight. A 5'10" frame could easily hold a healthy 200 to 210 if you are muscular. If you get down to 170 you will probably look very skinny. Maybe it's just me since I have a short stocky frame. I am 5'5" and I float from 175 to 180lbs. But I workout 6 days a week and I am very strong and very muscular. But for your height and weight, you should try not to lose anymore weight. Just focus on getting in the gym and turning it into muscle.

I also think it's funny how the men of America have turned into the vain women and we are just as concerned with our looks as women are. I don't think it's a bad thing, just funny. But the biggest problem is that too many people focus on their body weight and not how they look. You can also focus on your body fat % too much. My theory is that you should excercise and workout as much as you can, and don't worry about your weight or your body fat%, just go on looks. Like me, I think I look 100% better than I did in early January of this year. I have no idea what by body fat% is, but I know I've lost 20 lbs, and I have all my size in my arms, chest, and legs back and I can lift as much if not more than I was before. So I don't care about anything else, I'm happy where I'm at. Well, I actually want to squat more:D

Oh, some people don't know an average body fat % for male and female so here is some more good info.

A male body builder you see on tv has usually between 4 & 6% body fat. But this is after weeks of HARD CRASH DIETING and rounds of diuretics and laxatives which is very unhealthy. If you have ever seen a body builder between competitions, they do not look anything like they do during competition. They still look big as hell, but just not cut very much.

An average healthy male should have between 18% and up to around 28% depending you your body type. The taller more lean body type will have less, the shorter more stocky body type will have more.

An average female is quite higher. A healthy female that excercises regularly will have around 25% to 35%. This is because of their hips and breasts. This is is also dependant on their body type. The taller more lean body type will have less, the shorter more stocky body type will have more.

ok, here's my story

I was always really skinny. I was 5'7" in high school, and I weighed 140 lbs. Size 30-30 jeans. My junior year I hit a growth spurt ( the only one I ever really had ) and gained 2 inches but stayed at the same weight. I started working out, and when I was done with high school I was 160. By the time I was 20, I was 185 pounds 5'9" and very toned. I had 8-pack abs, and was in excellent shape. This was because I did not have a car, and still rode my bike everywhere. My brother had a near fatal car accident when I was 17, and it scared me away from driving until I was 20. But eventually, I got my license, and I stopped riding my bike/walking/running everywhere. My body held out until I was about 23, when the weight started to change. In December I was 210 lbs, (still 5'9"). I was obese by doctors standards, and a plain fat ass by my own. On April 1st 2003, I decided to start slimfast. I cut out all Soda, Coffee, and Tea. I only drink water now. Once in a blue moon I will drink a glass of juice, but I would rather eat a piece of fruit instead. My breakfast and lunch are Slimfast shakes. I used to snack on a banana in between, but I haven't done that in 2 months.

I'm currently down to 160 lbs. I was 200 lbs when I started Slim-Fast. It's definitely not for everyone. I have a co-worker who is trying to do the slim-fast diet, but he still eats and snacks. The most important part of Slim-Fast is eating a small healthy dinner, and drinking lots of water; at least that is what I think. I also exercise every night. I have a chin up bar that I use roughly every few minutes while I am home at night. I have some 20 pound dumbells, that I do hammer curls with, and a light curl bar which I use for 7-21's and triceps. I am doing situps and pushups, and dips and even leg lifts. I have to say that I hate leg lifts the most, but they target the lower abs very well.

My parents are giving me their treadmill, and I plan to set it up in view of the TV. Currently I am used to doing situps and working out while I watch TV, so I figure running shouldn't be a big switch.

Once I get down to my target weight of 150, I will start using heavy weights. Until then, I just wish to tone, so I keep using low weights with high reps (nearly unlimited). Getting in shape feels great. Everyone has commented on the difference it has made.

One downfall, my clothes are now huge. I'm used to wearing baggy clothes, but if you were to take away my belts, I would be unable to leave the house. My waist went from a 38, to a 30. I always used to wear baggy clothes, so it kind of reminds me of when I was in high school.

I was at 184lbs (I'm 5'8'') a couple years ago and went on the Atkin's diet (pork roll, bacon, cheese eggs, diet soda, etc.) Six months later I was more than 20lbs lighter. But I gained a little bit back, not that much. That diet has taught me to enjoy Diet Soda, which is great in comparison to regular as far as calories go. I've been off the Atkin's Diet fora year and weigh like 170lbs now. I think I'm going to go back on.

Sample Menu:

Breakfast: cheese eggs, bacon, low carb protein shake or water or even diet soda

Lunch: Tuna fish, deviled eggs, low carb candy bar, sugar free jello/pudding

Dinner: Salad with as much bleu cheese dressing as you WANT, Steak, burgers, hot dogs, chicken, blah blah, any meats--but no bread..

A lot of people seem to do this. Really though there's no reason to "wait" for any target weight. The more muscle you build, the faster you will lose fat.

My suggestion is that you always try to get 12 reps of as much weight as you can do. I always start heavy the first set, then lower the weight with each set because the muscle will get tired. But ALWAYS do AT LEAST 10 reps, no less. You will also find it easier to pack on muscle if your body has somethng to use for fuel and building blocks (extra fat or calories stored in your body). If you start building lots of muscle, you will also need to eat more to get the much needed protien and carbs after you workout. And for anyone trying to gain muscle and no fat. Take your protien shakes prior to going to bed and also try to make your highest carbohydrate meal within 1 hour after you go to the gym. Your body needs the carbs then to feed the muscles.

It sounds like everyone is doing really good though! I'm definetely proud of myself and it sounds like everyone else should be proud of their accomplishments.

Hell yeah on the carbohydrates after working out. I am a pasta-holic which can be bad for people who sit on their ass all day. Now I guiltlessly down pasta after working out. And it tastes so good :).

Chris

I don't want lots of muscle, just want to tone up and build up my endurance. I used to wrestle when I was younger, and being a short guy, when I was at 180 lbs, I was able to toss guys around who weighed 225.

Also, it's a matter of funds - right now, all my money goes into my car. I'll buy a home gym setup in a few months. I've had my eyes on a few differint options. I'm partial to free weights instead of cables, but I might just do the cable / pulley / plate thing. The other thing is, that I usually have a very active social life. It's killing me not to see my friends. So, if I am going to start a workout routine, it will be before I go to sleep, and when I wake up. I don't like health clubs and gyms. I get distracted way too easily. Not to mention, waiting for machines/weights to be free and all the other gym bulls***.

Plus the other nice thing about maintaining a slight build, it's easier. Takes less time, and if I go on vacation for a week, I can slack off a few days and not have to worry about keeping my routine. There was a time when my friends told me I looked like Bruce Lee with my shirt off. I was never quite as big as him, hell - Bruce's back was huge. But I had the same general shape. That's basically what I want to get back to.

Plus, since I started working out, I have much more energy, and I feel clear headed. Even when I only get a few hours sleep, I still feel much better than I used to under the same circumstances.

Yeah, fitness is great - I feel bad that I slacked off for roughly 4 years, but it also helps motivate me. I still have a long way to go to get where I want to be, but I did it once, and now I'm doing it again.

My alcohol tolerance has dropped severely however. I used to be able to put away 6 drinks in a night out and still feel fine. Now, after the third drink, I'm starting to feel pretty buzzed. So I pretty much stopped drinking too. When I go out with friends I'll have maybe 1 or 2 Miller Lights or a Grey Goose and Cranberry.

Zoomer, man thats some serious stuff you are pretty lucky to not have major complications ... i.e. death! Must have been a pretty hard fall or something? Hope everything works out for you and quickly. I would love to see your x-rays.

ToBeBackDoc...all you have to do is contact the local gov. agency in your town and ask them for my x-rays.:p At least that`s where they tell me they`re at.....in good 'ol St. Louis.

I don't think I can actually get a record of your x-rays. Do you know who has them or is reading them? There are several top radiologist in the area and even at my school. I'm sure the goverment has them wraped up somewhere trying to find someone to deny you your coverage.

Sorry about that ToBeBackDoc....I was just being a little sarcastic:p Nothing personal though.;)

As for my x-rays, last I heard Veteran`s Assistance has them for review(hopefully they have my CAT and MRI as well). I just hope the navy did`nt try and pull a fast one and doctor-up my file. The military has been infamous for screwing with people`s files. Especially when they`re making a claim like me.

All I want is to be compensated for the damages that I sustained while in the navy, and for the pain and troubles that i`m going to be enduring for the rest of my life. Is that too much to ask for? After all....it was the NAVY`s medical staff that screwed-up my neck.

Man it's just sad how they treat our service men and women. I'm sure you're not the first or the last to go through this. I hope everything works out for you.

Thank you for your concern:) . My wfe is totally pissed when it comes to military medicine. She also has a brother in the marines, who should`nt even be there. The guy has a major heart murmur, and has a helluva time doing long distance runs. The military docs know this, and they still make him go on the runs! Can you believe this crap?

Can you believe this crap?
After spending my four years inthe Army,.....yeah, I can believe it. Military hospitals suck. But if you think military hospitals suck, try the VA hospitals. They are worse. But you can't complain about the benefits though.

Yall said that you like to eat pasta after working out? I like to eat it the night before a long run. That way the stored energy is ready to work for me.

btw, 3 miles is a long run
