2023 CX-5 Can't update maps

You guys had me second guessing myself. I took it out of the car and the switch is set to LOCK while in the car and works perfectly. In order to update, I slide the switch the other way (unlocked).

Also- the Mazda Toolbox program itself had an update when I opened it today. I went ahead and tried to update my nav card, and it did so as it has the whole time. Interestingly, it said the map update was from 5/23. I am sure I did this update before, so not sure why it is saying I need an update again. I wonder if there will be another map update before my 3 yrs runs out in 5/24.

What happens if the card is inserted into the car in the unlocked position?

I'm 100% certain that the cards that I have inserted in my cars are unlocked and working fine.

When a new OEM SD-card is inserted in the car, after a certain distance (100km?) the card will be "locked" to the VIN-number of the car. When that had happened the SD-card can only be used in that car.
This is only possible when the SD-card is in the unlocked (writable) position.

All I can tell you is, my card is locked (registered) to the car (it shows my vin and date of expiration for updates when I use the toolbox update program) but it functions perfectly in the car when the SD card is in the locked position.

yea but it was unlocked when you first inserted it at 0 miles. sometime after that you locked it. Otherwise the licence file cant get saved. Or you got good clone :)

As I it was mentioned the default state is unlocked. Yes people can lock it after the license file is generated but there isnt much sense in locking it at all.Plus you may lose some feature if infotainment wants to store some files on it.
Its your car you can keep it as you wish.

heck I was going to try to update my sd card but apparently I am not even smart enough to figure out how to down load the mazda tool box on my mac.
I tried it again today and it updated my amazon card...to my surprise it updated and works fine.

Hi guys,

I'm a happy owner of 2023 CX-5 Takumi (top spec in UK with the large infotainment) and I've tried updating the sat-nav maps without luck. I found some threads about this but nothing worked for me.

I've driven for nearly 2000 miles so far (I read somewhere it needs to be at least 63 miles for the SD card to be linked with the vehicle)

I've tried the Update Toolbox on Windows 10 laptop, Windows 11 desktop and a MacBook, I tried with multiple different card readers and USB ports, I tried sliding the 'lock' lever on the card, I tried running the toolbox in admin mode and without antivirus and nothing. All computers see the SD card without any issues, but the update toolbox doesn't detect it and keeps saying 'Please insert SD card'.

I live in a new development and none of the streets around me are on the map. Not a massive issue as I use carplay most of the time, but it is a bit annoying.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to go to the dealer with such small thing, as it's a bit out of the way.

Thanks,
Pawel
This is what I got from Mazda uk and it worked

I've a March 2025 registered CX5 Takumi, and found a fatal flaw in the map update; as a previous CX5 owner I had the MAZDA TOOLBOX S/ware installed and assumed I could update my 10.5" SATNAV with it. On inserting card however, it's not seen. Then saw from forums I need to use MAZDA UPDATE TOOLBOX; why doesn't the old TOOLBOX have a warning. Anyhow running the UPDATE TOOLBOX, card is seen, and updates took 4 hours. However, at end of process, saw attached; ie card now corrupt. :(
Raised with Dealer & MAZDA UK, who advised the Map Licence No had been erased, and for £600 odd I could have restored:(
Appealed and currently offering 50% reduction because of my innocent mistake in trying to update SD initially with old TOOLBOX.

MAZDA UK subsequently admitted they knew SD from new 10.5" screen systems, can be damaged if previously tried on old TOOLBOX. So beware, as I'm sure others will make same innocent mistake; no warning of this is given on d/load page for OLD TOOLBOX, or in the APP itself.

I tried updating the SD card that came with my new 2023 CX-5 using the old toolbox, but the card was "not recognized." At the time, the dealer had no solution. A few weeks later, I discovered that my SD card required a new software toolbox to update the maps.

However, I had to wait until the "new" toolbox was officially released for download.
The update process took several hours, but it was ultimately successful.

I doubt that the old toolbox would erase your license number from the SD card. It’s more likely that the SD card's format became corrupted in some way.

Have you tried updating the card a second time?
Was there a problem with the SD card itself?
Did you ask Windows to repair the SD card?
Do not format the SD card, as this would erase all data and render it useless.

If Mazda officially admitted that the old toolbox could delete your license without any warning, they likely have a bigger issue affecting many Mazda owners.

My advice — if this is a genuine Mazda navigation SD card — is not to accept the 50% offer but to demand a new card, especially if yours is still eligible for free map updates.

Still awaiting response to my latest e mail to UK MD; their Cust Service admitting they're aware of issue surely strengthens my hand :)
Card obviously genuine as shipped with car.

My '25 Signature is eight days old. It, of course, came with a genuine Nav SD card. Works fine in the car. When I attempt to update it with a recent download of the Toolbox, the Toolbox home screen does nothing. Does not recognize the card. Nothing.

I reported the issue within the Toolbox "Contact Us" procedure. Within two days, I received a response and was asked to send the contents of the /License folder. I have no License folder! So, that may be the entire issue. They specifically said to send a pic of the card's folders if there is no License folder. Which I did. This leaves me to believe this issue has occurred before.

So, I'll wait to hear back before any next steps (like asking the dealer for a new one).

Have you driven more than 60 miles (100km)?
I think this is the minimal distance before the Mazda navigation SD card becomes permanently associated with the vehicle's VIN.
I'm not certain if a new (unused) SD card comes with any sort of license number.

I'm also not certain if you can update a Mazda navigation SD card before it is linked to the VIN number of your car.

Have you driven more than 60 miles (100km)?
Yup. Mileage was 105mi first attempt. Dunno if the /License folder was supposed to be there to start or it is created at some point (60mi?).

If there is some criteria that needs to be met before this process, it should be made clear. I saw none.

We'll see what they have to say......

Extract from MAZDA UK HO e mail to me:
"Our technical team have investigated this and have confirmed if a Telenav SD card is inserted into PC with the incorrect Toolbox opened it can corrupt the SD card. This is a result of using the toolbox that is incompatible for your new vehicle. This is not a manufacturing defect. I am sorry"

Lame... That is not your fault especially if you were never told this was possible. Mazda should be willing to replace SD cards if this issue occurs, or fix the problem so that the old program can't corrupt the cards.

Did they provide any kind of warning, whether verbally or in writing? If not, they have no legal grounds to stand on.

No; in my last e mail to them, I've suggested others may make this error unknowingly, so clear WARNING needs posting when TOOLBOX App is opened, and on the d/load page for [OLD] TOOLBOX.
I've had no SATNAV working, including SPEED SIGN recognition, since this happened, as car is asking for SD Card; doesn't recognise one inserted, as image :(.

The package of the new SD card should include a printed manual where to download the correct software to update the maps and a clear warning explicitly instructing not to use the old software.
