EGR Pipe Delete?

I read somewhere (don't remember where) that apparently you can run the FS motor without the EGR tube and not get a CEL, so long as both ends are completely sealed shut (header and intake mani). Is there any truth behind this? Anyone ever tried?

The EGR tube is the biggest pain in the ass and I would rather just delete it, hopefully deleting my mystery exhaust leak that I cant find in the process. I have a hacked stock EGR tube, well the ends of the stock tube, that are each filled shut with JB weld. I thought I would share my interest in trying, but also wanted to consult my Mazda brethren first. I think its a legitimate thing to ask about and if it could work with no negative consequences, then I'll do it first thing tomorrow! lol

Any info or opinions for me guys?
 
So if I just plugged the 2 ends that the EGR tube runs between, and leave everything else alone, I'm good?

but yeah, you can block them off, and as long as the ECU still sees an EGR hooked up, no CEL. however, there is no real gain to doing this...

Oh I know there's no gains to be made. I just don't want to have to deal with the EGR tube, should I ever need to remove my manifold to go back to stock (doubtful) or whatever else I would ever need to take it off for. lol Plus I think its whats causing my exhaust leak. It has to be that? Since every connection point in my exhaust from the header back is sealed with high temp silicone....

I actually have each end of a stock tube that screw in/on at both ends, but sealed shut with JB weld. I just have to screw them into place and it should be a clean seal.

Pics of those tomorrow for future reference. ;)

The truth. It was sold with the EGR tube still on it and shipped that way as well.. it looked like it was on there pretty good and no way for me to get it off no matter what I tried, just the angle that it was turned at.

Sorry to ask but couldn't you just put some heat to it (from a torch) and take it off? Or could you just not get a wrench on it at all?
 
The angle it was at plus the way the manifold was designed with the tube above the EGR connection didn't help, and it looked like it was a bit rusted on there as well. It wasn't going to move at all. I took off the MAM to try to get to it better, but it still didn't help. Figured I'd just get the Steedspeed as well since I found a good deal and after all of that I didn't want to go through the hassle of putting the MAM back on again. I didn't have a torch or anything of that sort. Basically it was stripping the EGR tube nut because when I did get it on there I was determined to get it off, but it wasn't enough pressure to get it off with just a wrench. You couldn't get a straight grip on it, you had to go in at an angle with the wrench because of the limited space.

EGR pipe officially deleted with no CEL and the exhaust leak is gone!

This is what it looks like on each end of where the pipe was. Pipe in picture as well.

Truthfully, I figured I would get a CEL eventually, but wanted to try. One day when I have the money to have a Billy Badass standalone ecu, It WILL be gone. lol I also put two and two together and figured that the only true way to delete the EGR was a standalone.

Just another failed project to keep the Protege's streak going. :P
