I am new to the mazda world of tuning and would like to know which intake would be better for our car. The CAI or the SRI.
Thanks:confused:

To get answers quicker, try doing a search or two. This message board has been around for quite a while now and almost everything has been covered at least once. Theres a search button on the top of eevry page. Welcome aboard

i tried searching. i must have missed. sometimes i am very impatient. thanks for the prompt response. This site is way better than stratusphere.org

the SRI can actually intake hotter air than the stock intake under certain conditions but with less resistance, so someone came up with the idea for a CAI. I got the CAI, but either will work fine.

from what I understand of turbochargers, the air is going to be compressed and raised to a certain temperature anyway, so a CAI won't be of any true benefit

The general concensus I have heard is that a CAI is "waisted" on a turbo car since the air gets headed up so much already. Most CAI' have a big 90* bend in them so people think that the SRI is better cause it is a quick route to the turbo for....better responce I guess, not exactly sure though. And then they just depend on the Intercooler to cool the air.

my take on it is this. if you got a big fmic, then there's no need for a cai since the fmic will be able to handle the cooling itself. but the stock ic is really small so i figure a cai's gotta help it out a little. cooler air in is probably gonna yield cooler air out...you'll probably feel the most gains when it's cold out.

but either way, you're getting more air to the turbo so that's always good.

That is actually a big misconception. While the air is just going to be heated up by the turbo it will still be relatively cooler than if it already started at an increased temperature. However the 90 degree bend and additional piping would probably increase the lag somewhat.

Cooler air is always better. Just don't make to much of a sacrafice to get it.

That's what I thought also. ALso, all of the turbo cars in the magnazines have SRI's. The are always 1 or 2 K&N's under the hood. Why not use a CAI instead?

cause all the turbo cars in magazines are running huge turbos. a cai prolly won't help that much since the air is gonna get heated up sooo much. also, they have huge ic's on them so there's no need really for a cai.

I know my question may sound stupit, but are there acctually SRIs designed for the MSP but not the custom ones? Who makes them?

if someone comes up with conclusive evidence supporting either case, i'll shake your hand. until then, all theories.

insidiousmsp has a local company working on a sri, there is a thread about it. really all it is is 2 45 degree bends, some straight tube, a reducer and a few small tubes sticking off, any exhaust shop or person who knows how to weld (bends can be bought at roadraceengineering.com) should be able to do that no problem.

man you guys are fast on the responses. Thanks.

No we are all just completely full of crap (rofl)

Sorry i couldn't resist. Actualy there is no direct evidence or study persay as one typew being better then the other on any application. I would go strickly by each units tested gains by users and see which is best regardless of being a CAI or SRI.

Cai V.s. Sri

If you didn't see it in your search you might want to keep in mind that AEM is currently working on an intake (no mention if it will be CAI or SRI) that should be available within a month. Knowing their history you might want to wait and see which they come out with and if they make concrete hp gain claims.
