2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protoge
Hey I just got my mazdaspeed protoge and I am having this problem with my boost. Every time I try to floor it in any gear it bottoms out like I'm slamming on the brakes for a split second and then keeps speeding up. I've never owned a car with a turbo in it so I don't exactly know what it is. Has anybody had this problem before or know what it is? I've braught it to the shop once and they didn't know what to look for. I would appriciate anyones help on this. Thanx.

your hitting fuel cut. from either too much boost, or its too cold.

bump, welcome to the forum by the way, still wondering if anyone has heard of this thing? probably get more attention if it wasnt in the CA section.

Yeah thanx i appriciate the link I might get it. I think that you both are right about that cause it quits doing it sometimes when I've driven it a while and it's not cold. Have you heard anything on that website that you gave me being good?

nah, you really just need fuel management or injectors. but this is alot cheaper and is suppose to just get rid of fuel cut. it was in the modders guide thread and the review on the site is good so im definitly thinkin bout it but im just wonderin if its dangerous to have this instead of injectors, it doesnt tell you at all how it works,it might still be overboosting just not fuel cuting and in which case your gonna hurt? so hopefully someone has tried it? it might be a good idea to start a new thread posing the question out of the california section. you buy your car with that stuff on it? i love the hood. how much are you boosting?

Fuel cut is there for a reason.. it is the ECU's way of preventing you from blowing the engine! If you want to get a fuel cut defender without any fuel management or tuning, go right ahead.. that's not what that product is for, it's for people who know what they are doing with tuning and want to just get around the limitations of the ECUs.

I <3 people trying to skirt around the safety features of the ECU .. just take the proper steps and get tuned if you want to get rid of it.

I'll start researching on that to see about the injectors or I could mess around some more with my Blitz boost control cause I believe it has that setting on there for fuel management. Right now I'm running about 20 psi on boost but I was running 35.5. I knew that was too high. Yeah I did buy the car with all stuff. I'm usually the kind of guy who likes to do it all himself but I got a good deal on it and I really needed a car.

yeah thats what i was asking, because it really didnt describe what it was besides eliminate fuel cut, and i wasnt sure if it actually was a safe form fuel management or if it would still overboost and just not fuel cut.

and you cant boost 35 or 20 on stock turbo man, 13 is asking for a blow and 20 is rediculous. all youve got on the engine is a cai and exhaust according to your sig. 10 is as high as you'd wanna go

yeah I just changed it down to 6. According to the owners manual online that was suggested. It still is doing the same thing though so tomorrow I'm going to take it down to the shop and have them look at some things. I thought maybe the waste gate could be a problem.

Do you have a boost gauge? If the wastegate actuator was bad it would likely not open and your boost would shoot up way past what you set the controller (I'm assuming electronic boost controller?) to.

Since you bought the car modded.. there's also the possibility that it has already had the wastegate replace with one of the ones sold on www.atpturbo.com. If it was replaced with a wastegate with a 12psi spring, nothing you can do will get that turbo to max out at less than 12psi.

Well I figured out the problem and I feel like a dumb ass. I know a lot about untuned engines and even super chargers but I've never had a turbo charged car before and I didn't know that you HAD to put premium 91 octane fuel in it. I've been putting reg fuel in there. So thanx for your input. I'm going to go crawl in a little whole now.

Yeah that absolutely is required.. when I first started my car up after turboing I had the 87 octane in and it barely limped me to the gas station.

Is there a sticker or something inside the gas door that warns to only use premium fuel?

haha, yes thats important. you still shouldnt be boosting 35 or 20 psi, 6 is stock, and stick at 10 or below with fuel management, i need to soon, my high boost is set to 10 and it will fuel cut if i run it and it is cold.

Yeah it does have a sticker that I never saw before. It's good now I'm sticking to 6psi right now too. I'm just glad that it wasn't a bad problem.

So I'm assuming your MSP is running good now? Cuz I have the problem everymorning when I start my MSP up and head off to work. But it has only been doing this since it got cold out here where I live. When I first bought her...she was running great . But that's because it wasn't that cold in the mornings.

Yeah it's running fine now. It does do it every once and a while in the mornings when it's cold.
