Berty's Cosmo

Berty,

I've contacted Paul from Mazmart (official AutoEXE dealer here in USA) and he's going to check it out. I'll find out what the price is and I'm sure they could ship it to you as it will have to come from japan.

i would also love to get my hands on these braces!!!!
can anyone help me?

Berty, I was wondering if they are member brace or strut braces. Also if you have any pics of them.

I noticed most cosmo parts are not available these days.... even from AutoExe.

They are strut top, but I am considering having the front one modified so that it braces to the firewall also.

I have also attached some images of the triangle braces that go underneath the front quarter panels.

Berty, Thanks for that info.

regarding in fender braces... I was told by some FD owners that the fender braces are noticeable upgrade.. I have a set of R-Magic braces for me FD, but haven't had a chance to put them on.

I might get my local fabricator to make some under braces like the old AutoEXE for my cosmo.

Seeing as the Cosmo forums have been a slow of late, I have decided to do a bit of an update...

I got a Carbing radiator cooling plate delivered today and installed it. I am really happy to report that this flimsy (and over-priced) peice of sheet metal does make a noticeable improvement to the cooling system of the Cosmo. If fellow Cosmo owners are going to go with a thermo fan set-up then I highly recommend this mod. On the flipside, it might be a bit of overkill for a street Cosmo, but for a track going road car, it is worth the cash.

The second mod that I have been toying with has been far less sucessful. I bought a HKS Twin Power DLI and after a lot of stuffing around I can safetly say that this device does not work with the standard Cosmo igniter and CPU. Even with the E-Manage running in piggy back mode, you cannot tune around it.

I did a simple data log of the car with it on and with it off. What I did notice is that even at idle, the ignition timing is really far advanced with the Twin Power on. After warm-up, the factory ECU notices this and tries to solve the problem by vastly retarding the timing. The issue is that the twin power isnt actually advancing the timing, however it interfers with the factory signal in such a way that the ECU sees this as an ignition advance, not what it is actually doing; increasing dwell.

The symptoms are extreme loss of power, the car idling as low as 440RPM and excessive fumes out of the exhaust as the ingition system fails to burn all fuel. After taking it out, I have confirmed that no damage has been done, however I am still left in the lurch in terms of finding an ignition upgrade that will work with my current setup.

Hi Berty,

I couldn't agree more the Cosmo boys have been very quiet I think it must have been after Antoine going to the Cosmo Birthday Bash we are all a little jealous,,

Love the cooling plate,, did you buy it local or from Japan I have never heard of this make (carbing )

I had a similar set up on a 300zx and it did make a sigificant difference,, It may be overkill as you say for a street car but any help even in traffic is a benefit.

Regarding your ignition issue do MSD do anything that would work with the ecu I had a 6al system on a Pontiac and it was really good,, but with ecu's it is always tricky as it's trying to rectify any potential problems,,I suppose you could get a stand alone system,, but lets face it then its down to cost.

I will have an update on mine in about a month as it is due to go in at the end of June for its set up on the rolling road and the boost controller fitted so we will see what she pushes out with the street port job de cat exhaust and the standard ecu as it will have the 1000 miles on it then after the rebuild
can't wait (cool)

I'm suprised it didn't work. as it's fine with everything from fc too rx8. did hks say it was compatible?
are you stuck with the item or can something be done about it.

I actually just sold it on ebay. I really cant be bothered with it now. The way things are going, I am going to have to go with a Haltech sooner rather than later, so I will just get a complete custom M&W ignition system.

I put a new/temporary exhaust on my car today with the help of a few friends. Out of curiosity we weighed the factory 20B Exhaust... it is a tad over 55KG from the dump back!

The front section with the pre-cat is the heaviest and weighs in at about 20-22 KG and each rear section including muffler weighs in at 17KG (x2)

The new exhaust although not great and still quite heavy weighs in at 32KG so quite a good saving. It is also a twin system. If I went with a single system, then the weight could be as low as 20KG.

Pics to come. :)

Props to Berty for keeping the Cosmo Forum fresh...I've got plenty to post about but little time to do it these days...:(

Great to know the cooling plate is a worthy upgrade especially when in traffic or on the track...I may purchase one after all (if they are still available) since it's looking to be a HOT summer here in Japan and I'm still running the stock radiator...

As for the stock exhaust, thanks for the weight specs...I'm going to run my setup (stock exhaust with the MAZDASPEED catback system) until I've got to replace the cat (better save up for that day!).

Bring on the (pics) (thumb)

I took the Cosmo to the "All Japan Day" today out at Banyo. There where about 150 odd cars and plenty of rotaries. :)

There was quite a lot of interest in the car which was nice and a lady even asked me if she could sit in it. (drive2)

In the picture below you can see the new exhaust system. I also got an RE-Amemiya boost gauge and steering column holder the weekend before so that was in the car also.

I got to meet Danny also and have a chat to him about his awesome L10B Cosmo. Hopefully next meet we can get the old and the new Cosmo's side by side.

Car looks great Berty,

Love the wheels,, what sizes are they offset etc etc?
have you gone the de-cat route on the exhaust ?

the tips fill the rear skirt well ,,and it looks like you have been poloshing !!

was it a good turn out to the show?

It was a pretty good turnout. There where quite a few odd Japanese cars there on the day, but it was missing a few which I would have liked to of seen like the NSX.

I think that the specs of the wheels are back a few pages, but off the top of my head the rears are 18x10 +32 and the fronts are 18x9 +38.

They are 3 peice SSR Gartmeiers. The fronts reall need to be +25 to fill the guards like the rears though.

With the road rules over here we cannot run the car without a cat and if you are caught doing it, it is a really big fine. The car has got twin 2.5" magnflow (i presume) cats at the moment. New exhaust is going to be dual 3".

On a side note, I did some more work on the car today. I raised the front by 7mm and it made a significant difference to steering feel as well as being less of a pig through car parks. :)

If anybody else is interested, it seems that 230mm is the optimum ride height for JIC's in the front.(Measured under the spring hat the the first lip.)

Some small updates...

I ended up buying a body kit for the car, it should arrive some time in the next four weeks. It is same kit that Antoine has, but it should have the illuminated Cosmo badges. I am going to wait though until I can purchase a RE-Amemiya front bar before fitting as I really dig that combo. I will also get the body kit colour coded to the body colour.

I really havn't been doing too much with the car as I have been so busy with work. I did get bored though yesterday and I painted one of the spare grills that I had...

I am also going to get my alternator re-built in the week or so. If anybody has some pointers or things to look out for then please let me know.

Very Slick, Berty...Enjoying your updates...Although it seems I'm going to be the last Eunos Cosmo rockin' the factory "aero" kit sans illumination! :p One of these days, I'll actually complete my "custom" version...;)

Let us know how the alternator rebuild goes, we'll see how mine goes...My friend at the Dealer said he would contact me when the rebuild is complete to double check if everything is "kosher"...Hopefully, I'll be "error code" free after...:)

Nice!

My Cosmo has very very similar exhaust ends :)

Where did you get hold of the body kit!?

Thanks mate, I ended up getting the kit through "Sir20B" on Ausrotary. He was going to import a whole car, but ended up stripping it down in Japan.

I have been ringing a few places and I did some searches. Pjman says that the FD alternator will fit so long as you can get someone to change the pulleys over. I think that I am going to just get a high-output FD alternator for now. I am also going to re-do my cooling system with two 2700CFM fans, instead of just the one, so I will need all the AMPS I can get.

Hi Berty,

as your guy is removing the bodykit from another Cosmo can you find out from him how he takes the door filler panel off,

The side skirts seem easy enough but the door filler panel has me stumped, I don't want to damage it or the door on the donor car

your help as always would be much appreciated (help)
