Knocked one of the covers off during last snowfall. Looks like something could screw in but don’t think the cover had any screws. This is on the roof of a Mazda2.

The part you are looking for is this molding cap. You are correct, it does not screw in, it slides into place. It covers/protects the mounting point for securing the foot of a roof rack to the roof.
I was thinking it may accommodate a roof rack. After a quick search I didn’t find one compatible with the Mazda2 but didn’t look very long admittedly. Ty! If I leave it open will it get water damaged, ie should I replace the cap?

You're welcome @Sublimer677. I'd replace it as water damage would be inevitable at some point, most likely rust.

It is indeed for the roof rack attachments.
I removed my continuous roof gully rails when I bought the car for a set of these as I had a roof rack. I wouldn't worry about water ingress/rusting though, as both are designed to let water run underneath. If you have a 3d printer you can printhem off, or pop along to a mazda dealer and buy them. Not expensive
