Cracked Engine Block (2018 CX-5)

Once the warranty on my 2018 NA 2.5 CD expired, I started reading up on the cracked head issue, especially through this forum. I approached my Mazda service dept to talk to them about the issue and they confirmed that they had replaced several heads already. When I said that I was concerned as my warranty had expired, they reassured me that the dealership would cover the cost of a head replacement as a good will gesture only because I had ALL of my maintenance and service done with them, including after warranty. So, fingers crossed, if I should have an issue they will honor this offer.

I wouldn’t trust their word unless they’re willing to put it in writing.

Yes, would not trust them...if they are so sure, have the service dept give it in writing!

We dumped our 2018 because of this risk and traded it in for a 2024 CX5 Turbo. Great car, and now I'm glad for as second reason, the tariffs!

From what I have read online it seems to affect mostly the turbo engines? At least that what I thought I saw on a TSB.
That is correct - Mazdas NA engines are extremely reliable - If you find original owners of early model CX5s they usually have high mileage with few issues -- reason its #1 - These engines are not like your standard low compression NAs -- If treated right - even the Turbos come out very reliable and last - Drive it like a rental - no warm up , redline cold, infrequent low quality oil changes / filters - etc ---it wont last --nothing will

You can say that the cracked head affects mostly the 2.5T but that’s also for 2020 MY and prior before Mazda modified the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold gasket. Mazda has also issued a Customer Service Program (CSP11) to extend the limited powertrain warranty to 10 years/120k mi for any owners experiencing the coolant leak on the 2.5T.

However, the 2.5L NA with cylinder deactivation after 2018 MY is a different story. The design of the cylinder head for CDA definitely is flawed with the 3 mm thin wall at the cracked area showed in the Ukrainian / Russian video. It’s a weak design to support the long and heavy exhaust manifold. Mazda so far hasn’t modified the head but the crack could happen with oil leak like the OP just found out in the hard way.

You can say that to Mazda’s 2.0L / 2.5L NA engines without cylinder deactivation used before 2018 MYs. Since Mazda modified the reliable cylinder head of the 2.5L N.A. for 2018 MY to add cylinder deactivation, I don’t believe the current 2.5L NA engine with CDA is as reliable as the original 2.0L / 2.5L NA engines. The cracked head on OP’s 2018 CX-5 is just one of the examples we have seen here.

Yes - Toyota is using Mazdas current engine technology in an exchange --but it does say one thing -- Mazdas building one the of top rated/ most reliable 2.5s anywhere-CD is a bonus if you go top level trim - super reliable - I have 3 and not a hiccup anywhere in 100K miles - I will check in every 100K

I was going to trade it in, but Mazda covered the repairs 100%. I was shocked but very happy!!!
Not a cracked block - just a poorly reinstalled tc cover. ~ cracked blocks on Turbos / very common - NAs / rare to never

I think someone just needs to justify their non-turbo purchase. That's fine, but do it with facts, not FUD.
