What have you done to your CX-9 today?

New front struts (FCS) and passenger side LCA (Beck/Arnley) went in over the weekend. Car is back to normal, minus a slight metal scraping sound (just the brake shoe that needs to be adjusted/bent back into place).

Once I get my replacement tires on the wheels, I'll swap the winters off and then get an alignment done. (y)

So a little update for the Z23 kit from Power stop.
Heard a nasty noise from the rear under moderate braking (behind driver).
Took the rear wheel off to check the pads and sure enough the outer side was completely gone and just started to scratched the metal on the pad. The other side pad and the pax side pads had some life left, not much though!

I recall the dealer telling me the cx9 grabs from the rear first, to avoid the car dipping when the brake is applied.
Thing is, these pads lasted 22 months, mostly highway driving. I don't tow or carry weight in the vehicle. I don't drive hard either.

The rotors seem good but I'm surprised the pads wore out so soon as compared to other vehicles I've owned.
Anyways, it was 6pm, everywhere was closed except Cdn tire. Only option was the OE+ ceramic pads for $68 (both rears).

Time will tell how they hold up but had no choice otherwise.

Thoughts on the life of the pads for anyone else using power stop z23?

Thoughts on the life of the pads for anyone else using power stop z23?

Strange, I have the Z23 pads and rotors on the rear too. I've had them installed since Sept 2022. Approximately 70/30 city/highway driving, 55k kms on them to date, and as far as I can tell, they aren't wearing especially fast. I check remaining pad life every time I remove the wheels, and I'd estimate that I've got at least 2 more years on the rear pads.

Based on your pics, it seems like the caliper may not be functioning correctly. I'd suggest finding a good local mechanic and asking if you can send them those pics and get their opinion.

I got 5 years out of my pads and rotors and I'm not easy on them. "Towing and mountains"

I would be inclined ti agree with smike about the calipers being a possible point of issue

Thanks for the input.
I'm certain it was inserted without any kinks and was lined up straight.

When you say the calipers, you think it's not being squeezed evenly when the brake is applied?

A few things to unpack:
When I pushed back the calipers previously, I didn't push it too far back so the rubber boot is over the caliper.
I was expecting to service the pads this spring, expecting about 50% life remaining.
I read it's necessary to flip the pads, as one side grabs and as a result, wears faster than the other side as part of the service.
I have not done a brake fluid flush. I've also not lost any brake fluid since new.
I had the rear pads replaced by the dealer at about the 20-30k kms mark.

Any additional feedback with the above info will be appreciated, before I head to the mechanic 👍🏽.
Thx

Here are my pads.

It looks like you could flip them as long as you move the clips.

(disclaimer follow the manufacturer direction for use and installation, my stupidity is mine and mine alone just because it works for me does not mean it works for you)

The front pads are fairly set i believe the rears you can flip even without moving the clips. If I am doing alot of heavy towing clips to the back is a better bite, everyday travel and use clips to the front

Roger that.

I matched up and put my new pads in exactly like the ones that came out, including clip locations. I never heard of swapping sides until this thread, nor will I likely need to.

(just to stay on topic, my front brakes are CX-9 front brakes, so...)

Yes it seems that the caliper isn't squeezing evenly. Or possibly that one pad is dragging because the piston is slow to retract/doesn't retract.

What's your brake fluid moisture content? If you haven't changed the brake fluid in a while, I wonder if that could be part of the issue. Corrosion in the line could cause a flow restriction to the "good" pad side, causing that imbalance. Caliper slide pins should also be relubricated as needed (I check them whenever I have to change pads).

So I bought the Powerstop Z23 kit 23 months ago. Found out it's under a 24 month warranty. Sent pictures and was able to get another new kit sent to me. Will see how it goes but I'll check the calipers before installing the new ones.

Oh nice! Hopefully it works out.

Polished the piano black on my center console. It was in pretty rough shape after 7 years, thanks to my wife who doesn't really care about how easily it scratches, despite my warnings/suggestions. This is from her fingernails, keys, sunglasses, hair clips, bags, etc.

Here are some post-polish pictures. I can still see some scratches that I can probably get out with another pass, but it's good enough for now, especially since she probably won't be changing her habits any time soon lol.

And here's what I used. A cheap Duratech rotary nano polisher with a 2" orange pad and the same all-in-one polish and wax product from Blackfire that I've been using for my exterior paint since I bought the car. Light to moderate pressure at about 2400 RPM, working with a fairly slow hand speed.

The piano black elements and also the glass/lens cluster, I swear, these things getting scratched just from looking at them. Using slightly wet fibre cloth to remove dust is only delaying inevitable.
