With ECU Flash, Rx-8 gets Owned

Maybe he just didnt know when to shift...like I said its hard to say, but I dont think its impossible...

RX-8 Automatic: Torque 164 Curb Wt: 3053

Mazdaspeed stock: Torque 160 Curb Wt: 2810

Mazdaspeed @ 12psi: Torque ??? Curb Wt: 2750 with a quarter tank of gas

So, why don't you think our Mazdaspeed Proteges can't out drag an RX-8 automatic?

torque doesnt win for you hero...it may get you somewhere off the line, but that dont mean s*** when youre down by almost 50 horses (assuming that the boost gives you 20hp over stock)

RX8

Sports package (6speed): with your mods you'd have only beat it if it was a bad driver

The 5speed automatic- well, our car with your mods without the ECU flash could have taken an automatic rx8....... it doesn't have a turbo.... it has no jump.... at the low end you woulda roasted him but he woulda caught up later.

Anywho, like someone said the RX8 was never designed to and will never replace the RX7. The RX8 was meant to be a 4 seater sports car. It's a car the emphasizes design and quality and in all honesty they accomplished that. It's got quite a few unique interior and exterior design aspects and mechanicly it will be the first reliable rotary engine.

Why automatic?? He said they both were spinning wheels from the stop in second....definately it was stick from his description.

i could agree that an auto might lose to a msp, but not the six speed in 2,000 light years

Yes I agree when I was at the dealer getting the flash I almost ponied up for a Grey one for my wife but then reality set in and I know I can't have it and build my bitching new house...Oh well in 2 yrs then.

12psi=5 more than stock. At stock, we can pull 160 whp w/ the new flash. Every pound you add can add from anywhere between 7-10 whp (this is a common rule of thumb) so... 7*5=35whp+160whp=185whp min. Maybe he's more efficient so we'll say 50 more whp...now we're at 210whp. Doesn't seem like much....but take into account that the torque will be at 185-190 ft/lbs min.(from empirical data and inference) then it seems quite a bit closer. Note also, that the RX-8s have not dyno'd very well at all.

Don't get me wrong...I love that Mazda brought back a rotary; I'm an engineer...we love this crap! I just think that it's not quite the "sports" car it is portrayed as. Or rather, it's not quite the sports car that some people thought is was replacing. (evil)

Ah HAH! I knew I was being conservative!
Rock on Rocket Man.

Just got through searching at nopistons.com and here's something I found which may have some relevance to the discussion at hand:

I have a customer who dynoed his and he got 184 rwhp just like the other guy from the rx8forum. He is sending the dyno sheet to Mazda R&D and hopefully to get a reply and explanation shortly.

Chuck Huang

So, still think it's BS for a Mazdaspeed Protege boosting 12psi with the new flash and is 300 lbs lighter than an RX-8 to hang even through 1st and 2nd and then pull away in 3rd?

Actually you can probably pull 155 at best with simple stock and flash. The ECU doesnt add but maybe 4 or 5 HP... it just optimizes it in the right areas

You also gotta take into account that you don't get the same amount of gain for each and every PSI you add.... it actually lessens for each PSI you add. So while you get 10hp extra at 9psi you might only gain 6hp going from 10 to 11psi.

Here are the ONLY 2 dynos known to have been done with the new flash. Like I said.... an RX8 automatic.... any decently mod'd MSP could probably take. The 6speed..... well ..... that's not gonna happen with said mods unless the driver is s***

it is totally beliveable, I took a rx-8 for a test drive and I'm sorry but that thing is not that fast, my msp could take it easlily think about it, the rx-8 would easily beat a stock msp but a msp w/12psi NO, at 12 psi he has around 185-195whp so why is it so hard to believe?

With the torque/HP jump in the midrange, I'd be surpurised to see and RX-8 keep up at first. I also wonder about the gearing of the RX...I know that the MSPs power gears (for starts, anyway) are the two typical autocross gears (2nd & 3rd). For someone that hasn't driven a car with the new flash, these gears are strong...with the flash they are completely different...they are unassumingly strong. They come out of NOWHERE!

you know what I don't even give a s*** all that much, I guess it's the colder climate in canada but who knows right because razor knows all.

1) You're right...I was forgetting about shawn's exhaust...the most people have some form of intake...so I figured that as a given. :D

2) True...you do lose compressor efficiency, but probably not too much until 10 psi. That's why I figured 7whp as well to get a low to average result.

3) Again...the RX-8 is nice, but I just seem to think w/ the new flash and 12 psi we'd surprise the hell out of one, even from the line. It may have been as simple as that...
