Who Is Running Gtx Gears? Results? Ideas? Hp?

Lots of great info. Hopefully something that can hold me over until i got the scrap for nick's gearset.

Well, I prlly wouldn't even be doing this but I called Nick a bunch of times about trying to get in one of his kits and haven't been able to get ahold of him and I have a few friends interested so I was going to try to get about 4 kits made. These are big number KLs, all 350+whp at like 12 psi so I was going to do a bunch of installs for them.

Anyway, seems like Nick is real busy, I know what thats like. :)

your best bet is to drop him a pmsg. or just keep trying to call him until he picks up. or if you work 10 mins away from his shop like i do, you could always drop in!

if I come across a used 1.8l GTX AWD trans anybody want me to pick it up for them, they usually go around $100-$200 CDN and I know a few guys that might have a few of em lying around in the states. shoot me a pm if interested.

Well, you get to pick from a selection of ratios iirc, and it uses needle bearings which are more reliable and will hold up to big hp and are more efficient, you get to select dog selectors or syncros, you get a new final gear...

I mean bang for buck this thing is IT. But you gotta swallow hard and dump 2800 bux.

So let me just reiterate, you guys are talking about 400-500 bucks + labor for the gtx setup, and Nick's is 2800 + labor. Im a big MPI/Nick junkie and any previous work, current, and future was/will be done by him, but 400-500 vs 2000 bucks is a big difference, is it really worth doing one over the other when i WONT be slamming gears even at the track? I'm figuring my car will be somewhere near or over 400 whp sometime this year.

Keep in mind that gtx gears are better than stock but they don't even compare to Nick's setup.

nothing compares to nick's setups, that's a fact, and I don't like going cheap on anything, but at the same time i dont want to spend that much money on something i might not need

well you can buy a spare trans for cheap, 2 sets of gtx gears, get them done at the same time and just have a spare, or pay for nicks gears and be done with it. gotta pay to play with 400WHP in mind. 300 is a different story.

So i was throwing around some gearing calulations, and i kinda have run into a bit of a problem. Assuming us MSP boys keep or same final drive ratio, and swap the 1988 GTX AWD 3rd and 4th gears into our cars, and myself, i want the festiva 5th gear for high speed...

the output seems to basically make 4th gear useless...

at redline:
3rd -91.62
4th - 105.33
5th (festiva .69) - 163.33

See the HUGE gap in the gearing here?

Even with the stock .8 GTX gearing for 5th gear, it puts top speed at 140.88 mph, which seems like an awful lot of load to be boosting with.

Ideas? Anyone make a longer 4th gear to even the gearing out?

Ah its not that bad. What exactly are you worried about now? That the top speed will be too high?

Well, the top speed of a broken trans with the gears you really like is a scorching 0mph. :)

Escape shaft/ring gear - 4.6
PGT shaft/ring gear - 4.3

(some of you guys might have to buy and install spacers or the reverse idlers since the PGT shafts are longer)

Both of these will bring in your ratio spacings pretty well.

Or, you can go with the gearsets from MPI. Those are your options.

maybe you should be looing into 1.8l GTX AWD ratios and not the 1.6l..

also, anybody have an idea if any of the new 2.0, 2.3l stuff can interchange into the old trannies?

ALSO, FYI IF YOU WANT TOP SPEED: My buddy and I blew up the trans in his 91 EGT. We found an old tranny lying in a parts heap at a dealer. 3 people told us it was from a 80s 626 or mx6, dont know if it was GT or not. His brother is a mechanic there and took the internals out and swap it into the Escort trans, he said he used mostly all the parts from the old trans and it fit together fine. First gear took us to 70KMHish 2nd to about 120ishKM, 3rd was long too. heres what you wanted to hear, 4th gear took us to 200KMPH! we couldnt even try to max 5th. On the highway at around 130-140 5th was like at 2000rpm, it was perfect. We drove it for a year and then an axle started leaking on our drive home from the cottage, we figured we could make it but a few blocks from our house the trans broke apart. Ill talk to him again to try and figure out what final drive he used and what year the 626 trans was from. as for strengh we beat the crap out of the rebuilt trans everyday for a year or so with no problems, of course we were not putting down 400hp but it still seemed stronger than stock

so nobody thought to spend $100 on a 1.8l GTX trans and swap the shiz in yet? Heavy duty gearset for less than the price of an intake, think about it...

only slightly modded (160whp)

?? 160WHP only slighted modded?! I have intake, header, catback, jdm FS-ZE intake cam, underdrive pulley, etc and I'd be happy to break triple digits WHP :P

yeah but the problem is you have over 17 years of wear on those tranny parts. I wouldnt mind if it was a automatic but a manual tranmission set. You just gotta hope you get a set that is in good condition.

Would be nice to have a good write up. I think Cwill has a set of GTX gears from MAM
