Who Is Running Gtx Gears? Results? Ideas? Hp?

that car is sick, i wanna kno about the head and hows he reving it so high. im gonna make 500whp weather stuff breaks or not but the heads up just help prevent it. what size turbo is he running? god im so courious about this car.

Well, the turbine is a .82 stage3 T3, but I dont remember the compressor trim, I think is a 62-1 or T61.

Remember the car has Pauter and JE, good for 8K in that engine. The head is ported and polished, custom turbo cams.

G501-17-240H that's 3rd & 4th for the 1988 323 gtx awd they come together and the dealer price is $165.95.

OK, newsflash, this isn't the right part.. I ordered it and its some sort of gear clutch hub assembly I think to drive the transfer case...

It *might* have been the right part at some time or another, but its definitely NOT right now. Ah well...

Yes you're right I was at the dealer this afternoon and the part they gave me is the clutch hub (G502-17-620E) which you need but it's missing 5th gear and overdrive.
For 3rd and 4th is the same thing (G501-17-240H) is for the clutch hub and still missing 3rd and 4th gear so I'll try to get all the part numbers but you guys are welcome to beat me to it.

What are the benefits of MPNicks tranny over just getting the GTX gears?

Well, you get to pick from a selection of ratios iirc, and it uses needle bearings which are more reliable and will hold up to big hp and are more efficient, you get to select dog selectors or syncros, you get a new final gear...

I mean bang for buck this thing is IT. But you gotta swallow hard and dump 2800 bux.

What is the diff between dog selectors and syncros. Are they both used, which is better? Sorry for the questions guys, I'm not trying ot get this thread off track, just had a few questions.

dog syncros have a side engagement with much more space between the teeth which allows you to just *slam* it into gear.. If the dogs are spaced far enough, (usually only 5 on each side) you can just get the rpms close and shift without any problems.

syncro engagement is an inner-outer type of engagement, with syncronization provided by a friction cone. Problem is if the syncro fails, its all over: its almost impossible to get the many-toothed engagement ring to mate up with the teeth on the gear.

Dogs are better but they have a rather loud engagement (CLUNK or CRASH) hence why they call them crashboxes.

Hey, Lcruz, I just noticed something:

You guys have an identical setup there for your 5/R fork, BUT, I noticed you guys don't have the reverse friction gears!

Hrm, thats sorta wierd..

Oh, btw, the reverse gear is actually down inside the case, actuated off of a secondary lever: the fork up top on your trans is a dead-head selection ie it doesnt' select anything at all it just idles..

Well, on the pgt trans, it has what amounts to basically a 6th gear that just mesh together and cause the syncro to rub on a cone.

Here's all the parts and a diagram.

No reverse gears before 5th I'm not too familiar with transmissions hoping to gain a lot out of this project.

Oh, here ya go, 17-715a and 17-712 are the reverse idler gears.. But, in the pic of the transmission, they aren't there and there isn't any room for them on the shaft!

Wierd..

17-301 is the reverse mesh gear.

These are for the 1988 323 turbo awd.

Its identical in layout to the PGT/MX6 transmission. so, I am pretty familiar with it.

Ok here it goes:

3rd gearset - G401-17-230A and G401-17-305A
4th - G401-17-303A and G402-17-210A
5th - G512-17-610 and G512-17-308

You need the two gear to make one set, remember that.

So, there are part numbers..

I would like to see if I could get ahold of a manual for a GTR to see if the gears are any different..

There is a rumor running around that the gearsets from rwd transmissions (ie rx7) are also compatible with our shafts but I haven't verified that yet. but I am shooting to get an rx7 trans to rip into soon.

Also, Escape/tribute gears will work on our cars also, but they are definitely pricey but I think they are also quite a bit stronger.

I *do* know that their ring and pinion gears is almost TWICE as wide as ours, AND that their differential is a 4 spider closed case diff capable of handling whatever you can throw at it! Its massive, it looks like it should be in a rwd truck AND it DOES fit into other G series transmissions as long as you are willing to shave the case a bit to clear that monstrous ring gear. ;) I also know that our gears slide right onto their gearshafts with no problem. ;)

I really need to try to pick up an Escape 3rd gear too, just to take a look. But, man, at $265 per gearset its a big hit in the wallet for experimenting.

Thanks I'll order some gears today depending on price and install them once I get them.

Lots of great info. Hopefully something that can hold me over until i got the scrap for nick's gearset.
