What have you done to your Miata today?

No idea man, that's weird. I usually use Purolator PureOne filters (the ones w/ the grippy yellow exterior)

I'm definitely going to switch brands, I'll see if those are in stock, thanks.

Are you sure the old oil filter seal came off? I always check the old one to make sure. It's happened a couple of times on different cars.

Yeah, the old seal came off and was still in the filter, shiny metal on the block and all. On a second inspection after the oil gushed out we discovered that there was about a 1/4" gap between the K&N seal and the block (hand) it wasn't even close...

I know advance auto carries them. They're pretty highly reviewed in the few tests I've been able to find of folks that actually tear into them and see how they work. And inexpensive, which is good. My pathfinder and Miata actually use the same one lol (well, it's the filter from the V6 626, which is a little bigger and fits on the miata's engine just fine. More filter area = mo' bettah IMO)

whoops! Damn man, that sucks :(

getting an amp from a buddy so hopefully i can have tunes again after my old amp decided that if it was connected, it would short out the electronics

I've got an old school Alpine 4-channel I'm trying to get rid of if anyone is interested.

I put gear oil in the shift linkage cus it was empty! It didn't really like it though cus it threw up on the way home...

I think I put too much in.

Do you have a torn rubber shift boot? I believe that's supposed to seal all of the oil in.

Oh yeah, it's 100% torn. I bought this car for 1200$, and there's not much that hasn't been fiddled with, besides this little oil reservoir, lol.

By shift boot, I mean this floppy rubber thing that attaches from this black plate thing to the shifter. Sorry for these idiotic terms, I just don't know the names for these things... :(

Got the K&N exchanged for a Purolator Pureone Gold (for a 626) and 4 free quarts of oil and a bag of kitty litter and my Miata is alive again! Thanks for the advice.

I heard good things about the Purolator PureOne filters, too, and I picked one up. I changed my oil for the first time since buying the car and used a Fram and my oil pressure is now 0psi at warm idle.... (unamused) Soo, the Purolator will be replacing it.

er... yeah, that's not good. Fram couldn't pay me enough to use their crap...

x2...i had a link where they went through all sorts of filters. Mobile1, k&n, and i believe champion are all the same filters....good filters but way over priced on the k&n and mobile end. Always had good luck with purolators....butttttt oil filters are just one of those things i just bite the bullet and buy OEM on.

Plus buying OEM oil filters gives you the chance to go in and BS with your local parts guys and make friends. Usually leads to lower prices later on down the road...its to the point where we go in and BS with our mazda parts guy for about 30min and he tosses a couple filters over the counter for us.

Live and learn... it was my first oil change. I also forgot to put oil around the gasket on the filter, so it should be fun getting it off.

I've got that sputter/missing under 3k rpms under load, so I guess plug wires will be the next thing on the list.

Hmm, that's cheaper than buying new wires, so I should give that a shot. I haven't seafoamed it yet, either. I've just heard the wires can crap out souper fast. Sorry for crapping up this thread with stuff that I haven't done to my car... :( I hate making new threads, plus that would probably be more annoying.
