What have you done to your CX-5 today?

Yeah, we get hit with some nasty hail every now and then. This was one of the worst ones I have seen.

She has same insurance company/agent as I do. They are usually pretty good. Hell my comp. deductible is $100. Unlike my $1k collision deductible. (cry)

That said, no idea how soon she gets it fixed. I only saw a couple of pics, but she has dents that look like baseballs hit her car. Pretty much all rental car companies are out of cars now too.

Easy fix today at Service King. Came out great. So glad to have my CX-5 back. That Hyundai was cringy to drive.

I watched some videos on youtube of this hail event... WOW!

Oh my God.....
This hail storm seemed more severe than 2 times we experienced since last year! I was surprised why the guy kept driving even his windshield had started cracking? Easily $10,000+ damage on his car!

I do like how he said &#$+ when the hail first stated (after realizing his paint was FUBAR'd) then just went silent when the windshield started cracking. That's like me, though, the first domino I'm upset about, but nothing you can do after that.

Let's see...looked like towards the end of the video he was on the I-70 - C470 interchange. Not really anywhere to go on that stretch.

Not sure if this was in response to my post preceeding yours, but I wasn't implying that he had an alternative. Crap situation.

I imagine lots get totaled.

I'll have to ask my mom what the verdict is on her obliterated Crosstrek.

No worries, was more aimed at yrwei52's post.

Those videos are unreal...are cars even salvageable after that? Is it worth it?
Every vehicle can be "fixed" after that kind of hail damage. As matter of fact, the worst scenario is you replace the hood、roof、fenders、doors、windshield、rear window、rear-quarter panels、and may be trunk lid no matter how big or how many dents you'd got. With insurance company now can illegally quote much cheaper aftermarket glass and body panels, those kind of damage usually run $10,000~$12,000 tops to fix for an average vehicle. This means if your vehicle is newer with book value exceeding that amount, chances are the car won't get totaled.

In my situation I did a full-body PDR last October when my PDR guy was not busy and willing to fix ~100 hail dents with the price of replacing hood and repainting in addition to other PDR jobs. This time my CX-5 suffered 3 times more dents, it actually looks worse than that blue Toyota in the video without broken rear window. My PDR guy says he can do full body PDR again for the price insurance paid for new hood、roof、right fender、2 right doors、right rear-quarter panel, but has to wait until his business has slowed down. My goal is trying to keep factory paint, and prevent cutting and welding of roof and rear-quarter panel if I can!

I don't know what I'd do if my car were to be hail-damaged to that extent, but I suspect I'd go the panel replacement route. I've had plenty of experience with PDR and we have an excellent one in our town who has helped me stay out of body shops many times. However they do have their limits and I'd love to see why your CX-5 looks like after having 100 or so dents removed, let alone 300! It's difficult to imagine a panel not suffering some distortion from being dented/straightened that many times.

I agree PDR has its limit. That's why I was worried at first until my PDR guy looked at the damage and said he can do it but just not right now. If he can recover the most dents back with PDR, I'd be very happy by escaping the cutting and welding process of body panels, not to mention the re-painting which I have no confidence on it from my past experience for longevity.

I don't know how you do it. I get annoyed by simple little chips and nicks on my hood. Seeing that much damage, I would sincerely hope for it to be totaled. Have you ever considered one of these?

I'll get used to those hail dents on the hood and my wife did for last summer while waiting for PDR guy available. In fact our '98 CR-V suffered hail damage too but we just drive it and not going to fix it. I wish our CX-5 can be totaled but with high book value as the car is still relatively new, it's not going to happen until the book value dropped to $13,000 range.

Those hail protector works but it's a hassle each time you deploy it when there's any sign of thunderstorm coming! I was lazy enough not even drove our CX-5 into our garage for hail protection. Sometimes, like this time, the hail is coming down without any warning. Once it's coming down, it's too late to do anything!

So basically what you're saying is you're settling for an imperfect repair in order to avoid something more invasive. Maybe you should look for a better body shop? I just had $10k worth of work done repairing the rear end on my CX-5 which involved replacing the lift gate, straightening both quarter panels, cutting/replacing the rear latch bulkhead and the bumper beam and repainting the entire rear end. My car is Sky Blue Mica; not the easiest color to match, and it looks great. I use one of the top two shops in town (I switched from the other shop a couple of years ago) and they have also done about $10k worth of work on my BMW during that time. There are good shopes out there, you just have to find them and cultivate a relationship with them.

Reading about the hail damage, it is reassuring me to pay the $50 a month to park in the garage at work. Only time I have to worry about damage to my car is on the road or parking it someplace not at home or work.

So what did I do today...

I got the soft cargo liner for my 2017 and put it in it keep dog hair out of the carpet. Very nice and it fits under the rubber cargo mat.

So now that I've got my CX-5 back, looking to do some light compound/polishing. Gotta get those swirl marks out.

Tried by hand last night and decided that was for the birds. I think I will need to look for a machine.
