V6 for p5?!?!?!?

Well guys let's recap. The first thing we need to, is just swap the motors. Adding in a turbo later will be easier, especially with wiring mess from what I am hearing. The KL supposedly drops into the 3rd Gen Protege using the stock mounts. Kick ass(cool) I heard that the drive shafts fit in the V6 transmission, does this mean drop the engine/tranny in and hook-up the mechanical bits and it fits? So this leaves another question, does the auto ATX and Manual ATX have the same mounting points on the Protege(so you can just drop the engine+tranny from the MX-6)? I would go with a MX-6 for the wiring as I have noticed that gauges are similar but repositioned as the protege. Also what is involved to make a KL a OBDI to OBDII? I think it would be just easier to get a OBDII car. If the cams, rods, and pistons are crappy for turboing, you would want to upgrade them anyway. I would recommend 96-97, I found a few for sale around $3000-$5000. They would be in working order and would make it easier for the conversion. If you could find a wreck one, that would save some cash.

This guy turboed a KL:

Did the 01-ish 626s still use the KL? That's gotta be OBDII, right? Granted, they're a lot harder to find than probes and stuff but then we're also not putting 10 year old engines into our cars. I would LOVE to do the KL swap but the 1.6 ZM-DE swap is tempting too (and probably a lot easier and cheaper).

91-94 K(k8-klde-klze-kfze-Kjze) series motors Are OBD1, and the 95+ KLde/ZE-KFZE-KJ) motors are OBD11.

Mx6,Probe,626,MX3 GS use the same transmisisons the mx6/probe have different top-end ratios than the mx3 GS.

MX6/Probe/626 are the same mechanical (tranny-harness-engine-linkage) everything.

Millenias use different INtake manifolds , but are the same KLDE in the mx6/probe/626, and sicne they dont come 5psd, obvioulsy different trannies.

In my 1st gen, i have a 94 PGT (klde), and a 94 626 Manual ECU.

The mx3(1.8 v6 GS) uses a smaller crossmember for the chassis, than the probe/mx6/626, other than that and the axles, the drivetrain is identical.
There are plenty of OBDII Probe guys who are running CEL free OBDI KLZE's

If i were doing tihs swap myself. into a P5, id use:

95-98 KLDE/ZE
95-98 MX6/probe/626 harness
Mx6/626/probe/mx3Gs Tranny
mx3 GS crossmember
MX3 GS shifter linkage
About the speedometer, i dont know if the 3rd gen is mechanical speedo, or electrical. BUt the mx3gs is electronic along with the mx6/probe/626. But my protege was mechanical, but the thing is taht speedo gears only really work 1 way..and thats thru a gear.. so i just removed the gear and put the protege mecahnical gear in...adn it works fine. But if the 3rd gen is mechnical than id guess a simple splicing would work.. The rpms arent gonna read right b/c its not calibrated right, but thats no biggie.

And you will have to run P/S

I think it wouldnt be too much trouble. the only thing i dont know is what form the probe/mx6/626 woudl fit on the 3rd gen. The way imt hinking since the probe/mx6/626 all use the same chassis. And the protege is a compact smaller vehicle, that msot of the swap parts would come form the Mx3 GS.

Theres plenty of room for a turbo..my buddies old mx3 witha boosted K8/with a millenia intake manifold. But he went thru soo many motors @ 10lbs, it hink it was mostly his fault. but he ran with milleniaS injectors and the car gave too much fuel. I jsut dotn think he had the right formula... he blew atleast 2 ZE's and about 3 DE's, and 2 K8's and 1 KFZE....

The mx3 actaully has less working room with the 6 in it, than than my protege.

I say you all sell your 3rd gens, and buy a 1st gen......:)

V6 is overrated

But it would be fun and a nice learning experience. Plus the sound of the KL is totally sweet, at least in the 93 Mx-6 LS V6 that I drove a few times. It had such a totally sweet mechanical sound to it, and it was completely stock. It reminded me of a friend's 88 BMW 325 with it's inline 6.

why u say that? im very interested as to why!

Stock doesn't that V6 not have great power (torque or otherwise)? For the cost and effort to put it in a P5 you could just run a safe low boost turbo and it would be much easier.

For the custom factor it's definitely a great choice though.

so was someone trying to do this? cuz i read the first page but kinda skipped to the 8th and dunno whats going on

I don't even remember, I think someone was just seeing what it would take to do it. A few people in Quebec have done it. I even have some pictures from a TV show in quebec or something where they did it.

It's possible, but unless you're really a good mechanic you'd get the same results with a turbo kit.

exactly, and putting in a turbo is near impossible because there's NO ROOM

Squire turbo kit FTW?

:D

http://www.ststurbo.com/how_it_works for those who haven't seen it.

IIRC one of the KL-ZE 3rd gen proteges in Quebec is turboed, and it was something like 340whp at 6psi. Definitely some nice numbers, don't know how large (and slow) of a turbo that was with though. 340whp FWD with or without limited slip would be a nightmare though.
