V6 for p5?!?!?!?

Theres plenty of rooom, you all are shooting down things that you havent even tried yet.

They do have a turbo kit for the kmotors, 1 for the probe/mx6 and one for the Mx3. I hope all the 3rd gen peeps dont act like this, i honestly dont see it as being that hard. If you knew how compatible these really are.

K8DE 1.8V6 - 130hp-110tq
K8ZE 1.8v6 - 144hp - 115tq
KFZE -2.0v6 - 160hp - 132tq
KJZE - 2.3 V6S/C - 217hp - 210tq
KLDE - 2.5v6 -170hp-150tq
KLze - 2.5v6 - 196hp-165tq

I still dont know why that guy took apart his dash, that is totally uneccesary. It doesnt have to be in a p5, go get a cheap dx. These parts arent expensive, this is basicallya junkyard swap, and very easy to obtain. its not the best motor int he world, but compared to a NA FS or NA BP, its tottally different.

And ive seen taht STS on a Trans Am persoannlly, and it dynoed @ 600hp or close too @ 9psi. For displacement motors it works wonders, for the lack of space. And the oillines arent much different form the fuel lines runnign form the rear to the front.

I hope you all don't take my being opinionated negatively, considering I am new here... However, feel inclined to say that this discussion is ridiculous. Is it possible to rip out the stock engine and replace it with a V-6? Yes, of course it is. Depending on how much work you want to put into it, you could drop a V-8 in there if you felt like it, as someone suggested (with extensive frame and body and suspension modification). But good God, is it practical? Cost-effective? Hell no.

Let us first consider the fact that the engine that comes with the car is, though stock, as new as the car itself. To buy a larger engine in the same condition, not to mention the labor required to switch it out is going to be probably half the value of the Protege, itself... It makes a lot more sense, if you're wanting to blow money, to bore out the cylinders, increase the compression, reprogram the computer, give it a turbo charge, and slap some nitrous in there. I mean hell, you'd only be getting two more cylinders and, what, a few tenths of a litre from a 6-cyl? Hardly worth it to me.

Now, if you're rebuilding a Protege that had a head-on collision, or that someone redlined to high heaven, or in some manner ****** the engine, then okay, do what you want, since you're not tossing aside a perfectly functioning engine. I guess I just personally find it more impressive when people do with what they got and still whoop ass. Especially when that ass belongs to a car with a larger engine.

or you could reuse t he stock mounts, put the v6 in, and ems and call it a day

I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm saying it's not practical, unless you happen to by chance come across a V-6 nicer than your own I-4 somehow, and have the equipment and the knowhow to drop an engine by yourself. I don't own an auto garage of my own, nor do I have the background to perform such a procedure even if I did, so I am also calculating the cost of labor into anything, which greatly reduces the cost effectiveness for someone like myself. My point is, for the average Joe, V-6 is not the way to go.

this is an is it possible excercise, not are we going to do it. the kl swap is NOT hard, i have helped with 2. and these engines are all good for 200k + a jdm kl-ze with 60k is more than acceptable

Well I can't truly speak from experience on the topic of ease, for I have no experience period regarding engine swaping. However, I will admit that it's possible (most anything is possible), but also reiterate that at least for me personally, it would be illogical and impractical.

So has there been any follow up on this swap? I read this thread: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123634356&highlight=kl-ze
but it doesn't have too much info about wiring.
So any vendors thought about making a harness for this swap? I see corksport can import the engine and reprograms a us spec ecu to allow for full output of the kl-ze. I would think they would be the first to offer a kit like this.
I would think aftermarket companies would jump at the chance to make a harness to adapt the kl-ze, it supposedly bolts right in with minimal mods.
I guess this has not been done due to the relative ease of a turbo on the fs-de due to the msp.
I like the idea of 200hp without having to worry about the fs-de impailing itself on broken rods.:)
Plus the more options the better.

there is a guy here in San Diego that has a mx6 V6 engine in his mx3.......its SUPER tight in there and doesnt leave much room for further mods

Yeah it's tight in the MX-3.. I've personally seen one of those swaps. I'd love a KL-ZE in my car *drools*.

Hi all!
I'm back after a while... I now work in a shop and we do this swap! We actually did two cars for customers in the last weeks.
We are planning on racing two Protege race cars with ZEs next year. There's mine that I've been working on for a year, I know I'm slow, but I didn't have the time&money to go faster!
I'll start a thead soon with all the pictures of the cars!

Awsome, good work. I look forward to the threads. Did it look possible to bake a adapter harness to make wiring easy and not a one off job everytime?
Also, did you guys do ODBI or ODBII cars?

The cars are retrograded to OBDI(JDM specs, no EGR). Adapters are impossible, but a complete harness could be a solution. Even with the harness there will still be some wire cutting/soldering. If anybody want a Protege N/A race car, the KL-ZE with a stand-alone is an easy, cheap and highly capable setup.
