turbo whistle

1) Turbo don't spoil. Fruit and vegetables do.

2) Do a google search of "turbo whine". Lots of people have whining turbos. You can use the word "whistle" if you prefer but "whine" is a more accurate description of the sound.

3) Stop with the childish name calling and grow up.

1) My bad I meant "spool"

2) The OP didn't specify what exactly we wasn't hearing, "whistle" could be taken from when the turbo is spooling up (i.e., induction noise) and if you listen closely enough with the windows up you can hear a slight "whine" if you will.

3) Get over yourself.

At least someone knows the difference between turbo whine and induction noise.

Here is one good example:

Note that the whining sound has nothing to do with the intake/compressor side of the turbo. Rather, it is produced by the turbine (exhaust) side.

Excellent observation. And true turbo whine (high pitched whine is the best description) seems most noticable to me when the engine is just coming up on boost during light throttle when there is not so much induction noise or exhaust noise to mask the sound.

I've modded both the 900 Turbo Saab and the 9000 Turbo (now 9-5) with balanced and clipped Garret turbos back in the '80's and early '90's but I've never listened to the turbo with the downpipe disconnected! Nice video clip.

No, now youre just making up s*** to cover up for your stupidity. You can hear the turbo spool as it is sucking in air (Hence the word "whilstle" not "whine" like a supercharger). No one but you brought up "whine" It's as simple as that, get over it.

Where was the word "whine" mentioned in this statement?

keep the name calling out of this. If you want to make an argument do it like an adult.

One of my previous cars ('84 Mustang w/2.3L turbo) had a loud turbo, especially when it was cold. As for the MS3, I heard it (faintly) a couple of times when it was stock. With the intake, no way...

Because of the Mustang, I think of the whining/whisting as the real "turbo sound".

You're not mistaken that IS the true sound of a turbo. The only ppl that confuse induction noise with turbo/SC whine are ppl that know nothing about cars and/or ricers.

Not really, Induction noise is the sound of the turbo spooling / sucking in air. Once again, the OP didn't specify rather or not he was talking about the actual mechanical sounds the turbo makes (i.e. Whine) you can get off your high horse now. If the sound is a result of the turbo the sound is the result of the turbo period.

most of the sound you hear from turbocharged engines is from the air being sucked through the intake. that is what i refer to as a whistle, and you can make the same noise if you pucker your lips and suck in as hard as you can (sort of like a backwards whistle).

as for a supercharged engine, that is what i refer to as a whine. and that noise is mostly from the tight tolerances of the impellers (i think that's the nomenclature) that rub together at X rpms

im not too sure what a procharger sounds like, but since it's basically half a turbo (single impeller only) im guessing it sounds more like a turbo whistle

+1

I love people with common sense!

oh my goodness people. You have debated on the semantics of a whistle and a whine long enough lol.
