transmition

transmition (Transmission) :)

Hi

My transmition is automatic, I found my self changing gears from "S" to drive "D" all the time, just like if I have a mechanical transmition, I use it to slow down the car from "D" to "S" so I don't have to apply the brakes to hard, I start on the lights with "S" and then I get into "D" when I feel the motor need it, and I feel the car has more power this way that if I let the transmition to shift gears on its own if I only use "D".

So here comes the questions: :)

It is bad for the transmition or the car to be changing gears all the time?

Can my transmition breaks if I slow down the car, going to lower gear so I don't have to apply the brakes to hard when I'm going 120 and a smart guy braked in front of me?

thanks

Alex

what the hell are you babbling about?

nobody even knows what kind of car you have. and since your posting in the MSP section and those don't happen to come with automatic transmisions you have to be more clear.

I am guessing this S is for Sport? I think its on cars like Honda Accords, some type of electronic overdrive or something. Or at least thats what I always thought it was

transmission not transmition :wtf:
(chair)

But, if this (transmition) is a legitimate spelling, please accept my sincere apology.

he is from canadia, and may not speak very good english, lets cut him some slack

And I think that the S he refers to usually appears as "slow" or "second or something next to one of the lower gears on an automatic, I think heis referring to going to the slowest possible drive in an auto then moving up to 2, and then moving up to 3(D).

as far as an answer......I dont know if it is bad or good. My mom does it sometimes in her autos when coming down a hill to slow down instead of braking the whole way, she will down shift. And a kid at my high school used to drive his pimped out mustang like that to be cool. Also when I sold my old mx6, the guy i sold it to drove like that, and I gotta say, it felt like it was better for the tranny because normally under acceleration my mx6 tranny would buck REAL bad between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd, but it was barely noticable when he used the shifting method.

all that having been said I have not heard of any problems my friend from high school had as a result of shifting like that. My mom has never killed an automatic tranny in any of our cars, and the guy who bought my mx6, never had tranny problems with his previous car (also an automatic mx6). So, from that little bit of analysis, it sounds like shifting an automatic is actually good for it

I'm not sure if it's bad or good.
What kind of car are we talking about here does it have a
3 speed, 4 speed, or a 5 speed tranny.

I've have lots of cars with automatics and I don't think that there is any reason to downshift unless you are towing something up a steep hill or coming to a emergency stop.

But to answer his question I don't think it would really hurt anything as long as you are not doing 60mph and try to downshift to 1st.

by downshifting to slow down, you're forcing the engine to spin faster, meaning the engine is running more miles than need be.

why not let your brakes do their job by using them?
pointless to try to "save" your brake pads

"meaning the engine is running more miles than need be."

huh?

don't you mean the rpm's are just higher, not that your adding more miles on your car.

you guys are mean. He made a mistake no biggie.
The only problem I see here is that we dont know what kind of car he has,

i know its canada :)
not a typo either

went to school up by canadia and used to call it that all the time
think it sounds kinda cool no? :D

aish.. of course it's more "rpms".. but running more miles in the sense that it's been used more or of relating to age.

Shifting the automatic tranny all the time may be damaging, just make sure to have it checked once in a while as well as having the transmission fluid flushed out. It will be damaging to shift to slow from drive at 120mph because your engine will overrev and blow. Make sure that you know the maximum speeds of each gear before you try downshifting.

THANKS GUYS!!! I guess is not good to down shift combine with my brakes to help slowing down my car at high speed, and that's the bottom line. I read that on "S" (Second) I can't go more than 104 km/h (65 mph), and on "L" (Low), I can't go more than 59 km/h (37 mph),By the way I have a Mazda protege from 92.

Sorry about the typo and I'm sure is not just the word "transmition" (transmission) what is wrong on my last post :), English is not my first language :), by the way don't judge Canadian base on my English because I think that 80 percent of Canadian have English as their first language.

Alex :)
