The average price of a new car is fast approaching the $30,000 mark. But the entries that make up this list are anything but "average." After several meetings-and some very heated discussions among our staff-we've come up with a dozen of the most enjoyable machines that are sure to elicit a smile and/or raise the pulse rate of anyone who loves cars. Foreign or domestic; coupe, sedan, 5-door or convertible; supercharged 4-cylinder all the way up to a good ol' pavement-thumping American V-8, there's a wealth of riches to be had for less than thirty large in today's automotive marketplace.
There can be only oneAfter our editorial staff put each car through its paces by logging plenty of test miles on both an autocross course of our own design and a half-street/half-freeway loop around Southern California, we sat down to make the very difficult choice of selecting one winner-the very best from a great group of cars.

This is a good article to read. I think its awesome that the same two Mazdas keep showing up in all these magazine comparsions.

Just listing the Z first you know that the competition has already been beat.

I thought the samething when I was posting this.

the guy sitting in the evo looks like the kind of smug douchebag that actually drives an evo.

Under 30K? Are they on crack?

A 350 with those wheels definitely wouldn't be an under 30k model. I was reading this article on the train back from NYC and I believe the price as tested was 29,800 vs. like 21,something for the Mazdaspeed3 :P

but can you drift with a MS3? plus the 350Z has a HUGE aftermarket demand of parts ... just talking about it makes me want to go down and tests drive one :)

I used to really like them but ever since I saw their review on Top Gear it swayed my opinion about them. I still think they look very nice, but I couldn't see myself getting one. (Although, I almost did..)

I haven't ever driven one so I don't know from experience but I've heard they handle like crap. I guess R&T wasn't taking that into account, I think they said the Rustang GT was a close 2nd.

Part of me wishes I had a 350Z. I have been a DIEHARD Nissan enthusiast for over 10 years. MSP is actually my 2nd Mazda ever. But i did not purchase one, due to Nissans terrible resale value and the fact that when i purchased my MSP, the Z was very new to the market. I may get one in the spring, but I am still considering an EVO. I want to be like the rest of the smug evo owners...lol

They look nice.. great aftermarket selection.. but never drove one. I think i'd probably take the STI over it.. black on black (glare)

That's like, a different class of car. It'd be hard to compare those two because the STI takes it, hands down.

yup.. hence why STi wasn't in that comparo, but the Evo did manage to squeeze in in RS trim (no power windows, plastic panel where radio would go, etc)

ya i noticed after i hit the submit it wasn't an option.. i just remember seeing subaru.. my bad.

Right.

I noticed the EVO and I was like "wait a minute.." but then I got to thinking bout all those things (power windows, etc) and it made more sense.
