Project Protege #2: A Mod Diary

The AVIC-N2 and all pioneer units ae built to enforce the laws governing watching dvd's while driving. They automatically disable viewing while A) the car is moving or B) the handbrake is not set.

So my parking brake switch "turns the parking brake on and off" (ground circuit closed or open)
The VSS or Speed pulse line has a switch to enable the speed pulse signal comming from my ECU (provides the unit with my speed) or open the line so the signal cannot be passed, thus making it appear that the speed it 0.

Make a little more sense?

ahh, yes very clear. Very smart good stuff. If the unit comes with a gps antenna where did you mount it?

INside on the dash, right in the far right corner where it meets the windsheild, works perfect, status shows 8 of 8 sattelites, barely even noticeable.

Alright so early rising, I was up and at er at 8 am.

I started with the speakers in my front doors. I'm using JL Audio XR650 Components in the front:

The wire was already pulled in, so I began my work on the door, putting down some brown bread and modifying the moisture gaurd. Then I went ahead and screwed in my baffle and then the speaker, all set. I put the sound deadening down with a heat gun and roller.

The door panels, however, gave me some trouble.

First came the issue of the crossover, where to put it, how to mount it, would it hold? all my questions, consumed alot of time. I went ahead and shaved the speaker inlet off the inside of the panel:

Then I marked off the tweeter install area in cut out the tweeter hole for the mounting cup:

I finally decided on the back of the door panel near the lower foam block, which I cut out to make room for it to sit flush. I used a professional grade epoxy to stick it on, taped down my tweeter wires nice, and then weather stripped around the rough edge of the cut speaker hole:

Speakerinstall5.gif

With that all done I went ahead and put the door panel back on, turned out well:

I completed the same steps for the drivers side door, with the speaker wire pulled into the trunk where my amplifier will eventaully be.

At this point in time I headed in town, to ship some packages, and check out some new speakers fro my rear doors, since my sedan had rear deck speakers.

The guy at the shop and I were talking for a while and he said for good speakers I should sound deaden the INSIDE of the door, as in behind teh speaker. Won't this get in the way of the window? Should I do it? All things to consider. Going in again tomorrow to pick up some new speakers for the rear and more sound deadening for the rear doors.

As i got back in the car and slammed the door the crossover popped off. Stupid epoxy didn't hold. I'm going to have to take the door panels off again tomorrow and be creative.

When I got home I started on the install of the deck. I used coat hangers to make radio removal tools, and pulled out my stock Double Din stereo. I don't like the 2001+ harness, I prefered teh grounding stud that had it's own wire, rather then the ground wire being in the harness. Oh well.

First things first, I had to remove teh radio trim partially to install the divider/support bar in the middle of the gapping hole. This stupid part cost $17 canadian, and didnt even come with the slide nuts and screws for it, oh well, lucky I had some at home.

Then I went ahead and used this big open space I had to my advantage. I cut the 4 wires i need from the harness, and left the rest intact. Wired them into my deck harness, and then tapped and zip tied everythign neat together. I then pulled my RCA's (3 sets, front/rear/subs) intot eh deck area and hooked them into my rca jacks on the deck harness. The RCA's are sitting in a pile on my passenger floor. I also mounted the frame for my deck in using a hammer pounded the tabs in to make sure it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
I ahd to drill a hole into the back of my luxury box, to allow for the wires to enter for my switch panel, which I also completed the wiring for, but didn't mount yet. Then i pushed the luxury box in and snapped it into place.

In the morning I'll finish with the deck, and get it all in, and teh rca's pulled to the back, switch panel done, adn teh remote wire pulled.

Hey man, some people don't hang out in the car audio forums!

To answer your question: it is available through your dealer (MSRP 126 CAN$) or you might get lucky on this forum. ONlinemazdaparts.com may be able to give you the hookup price under 100$. If you do get it, make sure you get the crossbar support slide, 2 slide nuts and too bolts as well.

Update 15 April 06

Circuit Breaker Bracket

As you may have seen in one of the pictures above, my circuit breaker for my Amplifier power is kind of just hanging out there in my engine bay. It was origininally to be mounted, but when I had it in place and closed the hood it would hit the button and break the circuit.

I always intended to reposition it, but I've just gotten around to finding it a new location, and fabricating a bracket to put it where I want.

I first began by creating a cardboard template, then cutting, filing, sanding priming and painting my metal.

fuse1.jpg

I know it isn't anything too fancy, but it puts it in a good location, and it doesn't look out of place or ghetto:

I decided to go with an angled edge to make it "flow" off the fusebox as best as possible.

It looks really good and stock in person. I know my engine bay is filthy, I'm getting to it!

I would be willing to produce about 5-10 more of these brackets for everyone's fuses or circuitbreakers if people were interested. They would only cost enough to make it worth my time to make them.

Anyways!

I plan on detailing my engine bay and painting my exhaust manifold later today if I get the chance, I'll keep you posted.

didn't notice that, lol my car didn't have that stock, i'm in desire of that pocket cuz im growing tired of having the tape player as a pocket, lol.

Interior Door Handles

Well After buying some of the 00 Chrome style door handles for 1 buck each off a fellow member they arrived today. I was only able to install the fronts since I only have 3 and need to wait for one more to do the rear.

They came in siler cups, so I had to change them over to the black ones in my car:

Handles1.jpg

I used a Square head screwdriver that was about the same size as the hole to poke the pins out, then grabbed them with my vice-grips to pull them the rest of the way out. They were in there damn tight, took alot of force to move them.

Handles2.jpg

I reassembled them into the black cups after removing it from the car. I re-used the spring coil from the grey cups, they felt stronger for some reason.

This is what the silver and chrome look like in comparison:

Handles4.jpg

And this is what they look like inside the car:

Handles5.jpg

Theyll look alot better once the silver switch surrounds below it are painted body colour red, or atleast I think so.

My car is currently at the shop getting the quarters and fender work done, covered under the rust warranty. They are also fixing my burned side moldings, and touching up a spot on my front fender for me.

I'll keep you posted.
