Project Protege #2: A Mod Diary

I was always unsure as to whether to get rid of the chrome accent in the car (at the time, it was just the button on the e-brake handle, now I have the greddy counterweighted knob though) or to get more little chrome accents. I think it looks good with the chrome finish handle, and it's something I haven't ever heard of someone doing so feel good about being unique for another few minutes :)

Those are nice. They are a pain in the ass to get out aren't they? I pushed and pulled on that pin forever before it gave in.

I did the same to my door handles about 2 years ago. My colour scheme is red and black/simulated CF with a touch of chrome/polished metal. The chrome door handles were just perfect. I'm sure yours look just as good with the rest of the interior.

Same colopur scheme I am going for, except with real CF. If The switch surrounds don't turn out after painting though I may go to the fake CF ones.

Small update:

My new Silver interior parts arrived today. They are currently being prepped by hand to be dropped off for painting friday.

I Sanded them down, first starting with 220 grit to get the intitial silver off. Then moving on to 400 grit, then to 1000 grit. After Spraying with primer once I sanded lightly with 1500, and again after the second coat. After the third I smoothed it all out with 2000 grit. it is soooooooooooo smooth right now (shifter surround). The window switch surrounds were really hard to sand in the middle where the switches go, but they turned out alright.

I'll post pictures of my prep work when i put pictures of them sprayed up at the start of next week.

What colour are you painting those parts? You know people go crazy sanding those parts down it really isn't that necessary. You just have to sand lightly smooth it out and your done.

We do aerospace painting at our company so I went to Sico's lab where we get our paint and had them make me a colour by colour matching with my red leather. The red is different then the outside because matching leather to the exterior paint is quite difficult but it is close.

Direct Match to my exterior Red.

My shift knob has red sides, and my boot had red stitching.

One passenger side chrome door handle in the mail to complete my set. 50 bucks burning a hole in my pocket waiting for a mod to spend it on :D

Update: 07 May 06

Well I worked on my car for like 8 hours today.

5 hours on sub boxes, 3 on detailing.

I made my flushmount amp rack rings out of MDF so they can be glassed into my install.

I didn't take any shots of the fiberglass work, my hands were too sticky, but the last of the fiberglass is layed (MDF panels mounted, fleece wraped, Fiberglass layed)

I also got my grill back from the paint shop on Friday. Cost me an even hundred cash, including prep work etc (I just don't have the time to do it amongst all my other projects)

I painted the mesh black, to stick with my Colour scheme. I stuck the mesh in with 2 sides tape, but I'm not to confident in it's ability to hold the mesh permanently.

Those photos were taken after a pre-soak, soap down, pressure wash, Drying and meguirs clay bar. I then installed the grill, and afterwards applied turtlewax swirl and scrath hard shell remover to the entire car. It helped with most of the paint swirls but msot of the scratches didn't disapear, just became less apparent. I then Cleaned the windows, rims, wet shined the tires, applied rain X to the windows, and called it a day. Exterior is B-E-UTIFUL.

Dropping the prepped interior peices off for paint spraying tomorrow.

Yo man, to secure your mesh, jsut use hot glue on the back. I did that on my vents on my skirts, and 3 years, still no problem. Scuff up the fiberglass a bit to give the glue somethign to grab onto, then use a ton of hot glue it will "wrap" around the mesh kinda and hold it on real good...
