Some other things to look at would include, are they mounted the right way. The Dunlops are directional one way. If they are on backwards they might not work as well or wear down faster.
Next is the alignment. However, the stance isn't that low over the stock Protege, only 5 mm or so. Camber shouldn't be a problem. However, if you lowered it more with after-market parts then you should have had an alingmetn done anyway after getting the car lowered.
Last but not least, rotate the tires on a regular basis and they should last a little longer. And don't spin the tires.
As for replacements, personally I would stick with the Dunlops becuase Mazda chose them for a specific reason. Different tires are built differently, the Dunlops were chosen becuase they could handle the cars weight and handling characteristics.
However, I would think about getting Michelins. Just my opinion though.
