Prince Valorum's 95 626 Build Thread

Maybe they're not all bad? I hear the stories from my buddy that works at Goodyear, and I'd never take any of my vehicles there after what he's told me.

Per my experience Valvoline seems pretty solid on doing great work and maintaining honest relationships with the customer. I think its because we are corporate owned and not franchised. (lots of checks and balances and accountability and whatnot). Sure mistakes happen sometimes but we back up all our work with guarantees and whatnot. And its funny you mention goodyear b/c my buddy used to work there who now works at my store and yes he has the same sort of stories lol.

Anyway nuff threadjack. :p

Goodyear thread jack story;

I had some 16" Konig Verdicts I powder coated myself when I worked at a PC shop. One tire got a nail in it so I dropped it off to be repaired. I pick up the wheel and the whole face of the wheel is scratched up very badly. I was like WTF?! And the d-bag working there said "Yeah, we had to get like 3 guys to stand on the wheel to get that damn low profile tire back on.". Stay away from Goodyear. lulz.

Yeah, I always here stories about "oh man, this cool car came in, so when I was working on it, I told them I heard a noise when I pulled it out, so I went on a joy ride in some dudes car. Yeah, left a massive burnout when I left, ahaha." If I saw some monkey kid pull s*** like that in my car, I don't even know what I would do, but when all is said and done, I would probably be wearing his skin as a new suit.

Got a bit of work done tonight

Josh got the antenna hole shaved the other day. We'll treat the backside against rust before it goes back on the truck.

Cab sanded down, still waiting on the stupid glass guy to show up to take the windshield out

Roof of the cab stripped, ready for primer

Awww yeah, looks brand new. These are the lids on the gas tank
IMG_9937.jpg

It's the lower metal hardline that's leaking. I don't think we'll be able to get the screws out, and obviously the use of heat isn't really recommended. Might just have to get a whole new tank

s*** sucks, that's 113$ worth of supplies…

The paint looks awesome on the inside of the door where it was never exposed. I bet this truck looked awesome like 20 years ago…

Part of the passenger side rocker Josh pulled out with the stud gun.

Sweet portable work light Josh made the other day, I think I'll definitely be copying the idea. It's perfect for a garage where the lighting isn't ideal, and should last a lot longer than those little work lights that seem to have about an hour of bulb life.

Hard to see the light it puts out, but maybe you can tell

Here are those opinions I was telling you about.

If I were doing doing something like this stuff it would be upol Raptor spray kit. I just figured it may help someone looking for colors.

I seem to remember colors being available for Herculiner as well... no matter.

My Herculined fenders have seen some tree trunks. No problem on the finish. The only thing Herculiner seems to dislike is rocks, as my sliders have lost a bunch.

I've also applied it to the side of my truck as well. Holds up good to debris/trees like Donny was saying, but sliders have lost a good amount by using them for what they are meant to do. SO thats to be expected anyway.

As for UV protection, I can't really say. Its a lil duller than it was I suppose when it was first applied. But then again I haven't really washed my truck (once) since it was applied in the last 5-6 months. And from what I remember it was kind of a b**** to clean it nice. Really have to scrub good.

Also I believe they have a UV protectant that can be applied after rolling the product on.

I really wanted to use the Raptor liner kit, but access to a compressor at the time was limited and I got the Herculiner kit 1/2 off. My suggestion for your buddy would be to just do everything in the Raptor liner. No personal experience but from what I've read it hardens a bit more than Herculiner as its a 2 part kit (come with a hardener) so I would think it would possibly clean off a bit better. And you can change the consistency with the compressor so it can be rough or a bit thinner...

Thats just my :twocents:

Herculiner says to use the UV protectant if you want the finish to remain glossy. I did not want glossy so no UV protectant for me. It has stayed black but has lost it's shine (exactly what I wanted).

I use an automatic car wash that services large fleet vehicles. They get it clean every time.

wow lots of great work being done to your truck, subbing so i can see how it turns out.

Thanks a lot! Eventually it'll get back to the 626 build, but I wanted to take care of my winter truck before it got destroyed by the salt this year!

Good info, Josh. That was from the TB forum?

Yea, TB forum.

And in retrospect, one more salty winter wouldn't have done that much more damage, so we could've waited until spring. Now 5 more winters, then yea, it'd get much worse...lol

If I put it off for one winter, I would just keep putting it off. I just needed to bite the bullet and start it, lol, and I've got you to keep me going because you want your garage back! :D

Yea, each day that passes without work being done to the truck (damn glass guy) I get a little more sour. haha I can deal, but I'd like to at least get Steph back in there asap. Once the truck is primed, sanded and off to paint, I'm gonna give the garage a good cleaning to get all that crap out since there won't be any more body work to do in there. (just some quick sanding for the bedliner stuff) I don't want all that dust and whatnot falling on her TB.

More TB talk too...

Directions for the Herculiner are to just scuff up the paint, clean with mineral spirits, wipe clean and then apply the product. Used a 200 grit or so (i think) to scuff. In the kit they supply a scotch bright pad basically. But no priming necessary.

If your doing the Herculiner for any tight spots or cracks, use a brush and dab those spots first then roll it on. Did two coats on mine and still had 1/4 of a can left or so...

Here are some finished pics.

I had body damage to pound out, so afterwards I took a DA sander with 120grit and took the areas I was doing down to primer. My sliders/bumpers/plastic pieces I did with no prep. They took it well.

Nick took more/better pics of his than I did, plus shows better against his red than my black in photos.

Ooo, I like that he did the mirrors, too. I've never seen a TB that looked like it could do anything, honestly. That one looks pretty mean.

Oh yea, there are some pretty serious ones out there. haha

And I called the glass guy this morning, he told me to call the girls in the office, give them my address, and if someone was nearby, they might be able to stop by. I called the office and told them the deal and how I already gave them my info LAST Friday. So, she said she'll send whoever's available out since Steph is off and home all day. We'll see...

I usually don't like the EXT/XL versions, but this one is bad-freakin-ass!!

I wanna say this guy's spare tire holder is a hitch-mounted design. And, it flips down so he can open his hatch. Not sure if he custom made it, or if he found/bought it that way. I could try and get more info if you're interested...

Heck yeah, man. If you can get a bit more info about that hitch mounted tire carrier, I'd be more than happy to check it out for sure! Those baller ARB bumpers are crazy expensive. I was only looking at the ones for Land Cruisers on the rear (site didn't have my pickup as an application), but they were like 2600$ for the dual tire carrier and the ladder to the roof... Crazy. I've been trying to talk myself out of getting an M100 or M416 1/4 jeep trailer for off road exploration and camping... It's always something! :D
