For anyone in the Chicagoland area with a Speed3 or 6 looking for a solid tune, go see Jorge at P & L in Franklin park. They have a long history with Subaru, but have been gradually expanding into the Mazda market. Jorge understands how this ecu works and how to tune a butter-smooth daily driver (he also tunes huge hp race cars.) I drive 60 miles/day commuting to work and like to get into the throttle, so I did not want huge midrange peaks, rather great power that I can use frequently without torching my engine. Very happy with these guys.

$225/hr, and figure 1.5-2 hours to sort everything out. It was a dyno tune through my AP. I'm not sure if they do street tunes...

For anyone in the MD area Jorge also goes down to IAG Performace in Westminster. He's been doing tunes for them for about 19 months now.

Im having my speed3 tuned there and got a chance to talk to Jorge a bit. He was one of the few that got to help Beta test Cobb's AP for the mazdaspeed3 when it first came out. He had a lot of nice things to say about the mazda and its potential, and how its a nice change for him to tune them from all the STIs that come in to IAG.

Unfortunately for me, during yesterdays tune, there was an issue with the latest firmware that was updated on friday from Cobb. when Jorge went to load a map onto my ECU it would not connect... and apparently the AP thought my car was a Cali car!
After a talk with Christian over at Cobb, they found that it was an issue they had just became aware of just a day or so ago (talk about bad timing)... Also to add to the problem Cobb is moving its office from UT to TX and their computers wont be up for a couple days....

so sadly I left the shop last night with no map on my comp (gonna have to drive it like a granny.. no boosting AT ALL) until they can get an update for the AP... AND Jorge is only at IAG for each last weekend of the month, so I wont get the tune finished till Feb. until then ill just get a OTS map after Cobb updates....

sigh.... but yeah Jorge is the s***... Highly recommend both IAG and Jorge for the VA, MD, southern PA folks!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I'm really enjoying using the requested torque model! Makes for an interesting FWD car, when you can really tailor each gears power curve, to the intended use, tires, etc.

A lot of cars outside of Cali are in fact Cali-spec cars, including mine in Massachusetts.

If your referring to me, (Probably talking to the OP though) I'm going to get my protune tomorrow. Jorge is back at IAG this weekend and my ECU/AP issue finally seems to be fixed.

So I will be posting tomorrow or Sunday about it.

can we get an update on how the tune is working for you?

I am extremely happy with my tune! The power delivery is very linear, and having power hold to redline makes the car very fun to drive. I don't have to shift at 5500 like others to avoid a nose-dive. I have seen a lot of dyno sheets where boost is cranked at 4k rpms to make a huge tq number, but that puts a lot of unnecessary stress on the internals for bragging rights. I don't think that a wad of power at from 3.5k to 4.5k necessarily makes for a faster car, and I haven't seen many make great power at 6700 rpms like my tune. At 4k, my boost is at a very safe 15.6psi ramping up until redline. My fuel trims all look great in various weather conditions, and I don't see any knock events. Keep in mind that I make this power with a STOCK DP!
In all, my car left P&L a far better car than I showed up with, and well worth the money I spent with them. I highly recommend the pre-tune boost check they perform to rule out any leaks...I had 3 that I did not know about. I can't wait to get to the track this Spring to see what it will do. Kudos to P&L

EDIT: I must add that depending on the engine speed, boost can vary by quite a bit. By this, I mean if i start to accelerate @2.5k, power delivery is as you see it on the dyno graph, with boost holding @15.6psi at lower rpms and building after 4k. If I apply full throttle @4k, I see 23.8psi and the boost tapers back to 19-20psi after 4.5k.

thanks for the update...this further solidifies my choice to go with P&L. I just need a aftermarket CDFP and turbo inlet and ill be ready for the tune. Where did they find the leaks?

crack under the valve flange that had to be welded, leak between the valve and flange (no gasket) and one on the valve itself. the valve leak was cleared up by putting a screw in the overboost vent. I don't know how my car wasn't driving f'd up, but it should have been!

are you referring to the bypass/blow-off valve?

yep. It was 40.00 well spent to find the leaks...and then of course the bill for repairing everything so I could get tuned! oh well, it's all in proper working order now.

Thanks for the review! I had contacted them via email about 7-8 months back when I had some bolt-ons and an AP for my MS3. I just recently started modding up the MS3 after de-modding and plan to use them for a tune come this spring.

it's a completely different animal when you get it back. you'll love it!

took the words right outta my mouth... I had my tune today ... and looking at your tune we are almost identical lol

one word to describe it now is Smooth.... the power is gradual and consistent.
there is virtually NO torque steer, and Ive done a few WOT pulls on the back roads on my way home to try and find some. It's incredible, the power is harnessed extremely well I just wish I got a TMIC or FMIC before doing it now... ah well.

Very nice!! I hope I see over 300hp but we shall see. For power mods Ill have pg manifold, TBE, cobb intake, forge bpv, Cobb ap, possibly a fmic or tmic if I find a good enough deal on one.

Your going to want to look at a fuel pump upgrade. Thats more important for you right now.

08SPEED03Veteran was at IAG with me today to get a tune as well. He still has his stock fuel pump, I mentioned that he may run into fuel pressure loss and sure enough it did.
