My review of the CX-5

14 CX-5
Let me start by saying I've been driving for 16 yrs. I didn't know it back then when I was first handed a set of keys to an old beater that I would eventually form a strong relationship with cars. I've owned many of them in my 30ish years on earth. They used to be big pieces of metal with wheels and seat belts but they graduated into something more. Due to my curious nature of things, I began to learn about cars, their heritage, how they differ and how to fix them. I am a backyard mechanic which doesn't mean much other then I've taken the time to learn how to fix them when they're broken.

Fast forward to my decision to buy this vehicle. I was driving around in a 07 Mazda 3. It didn't have the power I wanted but it had everything else driving-wise that I did. Handled great, steering was good and braking was good. It's one of two cars that I really enjoyed owning (the other was a modded Srt-4). There were some things I didn't like about it but those issues seemed to be resolved when I bought my CX-5. Initially, I wanted to get a Kia Sportage. Due to it's name and Kia's great warranty, it was a match made in heaven. However, the salesman trying to earn my hard earned $$ wasn't working hard enough for me. We never saw eye to eye on the price which was the nail in the coffin that turned me away from that dealership.

Now, through and through, I'm a car guy. I like their low center of gravity, looks and what they offer as far as a driving experience (if you get the right one). I drive aggressively. I take turns like I'm in the Indy 500, I enjoy accelerating briskly when on the highway or back roads and I like to push my cars to the limits I'm comfortable with. Needless to say, I've never fancied myself in an SUV. The fact that I was drawn to them when I started looking for a new vehicle either meant I was getting older or more boring. I'll hold on to the first assumption!

Finally....my review of the CUV. I absolutely LOVE the way it looks! From front to back, it offers a sleek, stylish, sexy look without that stupid smiling grill that ruined Mazdas for a long time. I like it's stance and persona if you will. It just looks fun to drive!! All this excitement and I hadn't even stepped foot into one.

Onto the first thing I noticed when getting inside, it has a push button start!!!! I know there are many vehicles with this option but this was my first introduction to it. 16, SIXTEEN YEARS of using a key to start my vehicles and now this one defies logic and forces me to forget the muscle memory of turning a key! For me, depressing the brake pedal and pushing that start button is like getting into a formula one car and getting ready for the experience. Of course this car is nowhere near that caliber but you are getting ready for that "zoom zoom" experience that Mazda always brags about!

List of likes....
-Headlights! H.I.D.'s which work extremely well at night. I'm really impressed with the quality. To boot, I have auto lights which is awesome because I'm lazy and don't want to turn the lights on at night. Also, these lights (when equipped) turn into my direction of travel. I really like that feature. It's something small but it makes me smile when I see them come back to center after I've completed the turn.
-Cockpit. I think it is set up really well. I like the material and lay out. It really is driver friendly. I've driven in my share of cheaply made interiors and this is far from one. Everything is easy to get to and right where I want it to be. The colors go well together and it looks like a more expensive vehicle.
-Dashboard. It's somewhat digital. I like the design. Not too bright at night and bright enough during the day. I love the estimated MPGs and how much fuel remaining until empty. Again, something small but I like these features.
-Info center. I have Navi and the Bose sound system. First, the navi (in my book) is pretty cool. Yes it's a small screen compared to what's out there BUT it's still functional and not at all hard to read and understand. There are plenty of features to mess around with and get familiar with. I like the navigation because it tells me where to go using the front speakers and keeps music playing in the rear for my passengers. Also, I'm not really looking at it while I'm driving so again, I don't really mind the size.
The sound system is really good! I'll admit, it took sometime to get used to because the sound comes from the dashboard and not the door speakers like I'm use to. Once you turn up the sound, it sounds PHENOMINAL. The bass hits hard and the sound is really clear. I'm really taken back with the quality of it.
-The seats. They're pretty damn comfortable from front to back. Manufactures have a knack for making good front seats and horrible back seats. This is not the case here. There's ample head and leg room and the quality is second to none. I think someone at Mazda cracked open the suggestion box and made the rear passenger compartment as comfortable as the front.
-Cargo. I don't know how many bodies people plan on putting in the trunk (seems like the mafia is the one that writes reviews for trunk/cargo space) but it's plenty roomy and you have the option of folding the rear seats down. There's more then enough space in the rear to accommodate your needs in my opinion. If you need more, buy a pick-up truck.
-Acceleration. My favorite category! With normal driving exercises, the CX-5 goes through the gears rather nicely. The transition is mostly seamless and not all too noticeable especially compared to the 3. I do notice that the gears change quickly and get up to the top gear as quick as possible. This, I surmise is because its trying to save on MPGs. Again, there is an almost tranquilly smooth change in gears without the driver or passengers noticing it.
The few times I've gotten on it (had to play nice because of the break in period) and not even flooring it, I was surprised with it's power. No, you wont beat a Cherokee Srt-8 or Ford Lightning in the 1/4 mile but it gets the job done when making lane changes or getting around grandma who clearly cannot see the posted speed limit.
-Braking. Better, BETTER then the 3. The pedal is firm and it slows down when I expect it to without delay. I enjoy the feel of the pedal because it's not too over powering or too soft.
-Steering. It handles extremely well. I haven't brought it to the track but driving on Jersey roads is more then enough testing then I need to decide whether or not it responds to my inputs. It's tight and accurate. It kind of brings together the power and driving experience that I was looking for.
-MPGs. They are the BEST I've ever gotten in any vehicle. I'm getting around 27.1 mixed and I haven't even done my first oil change yet. I'm getting a little over 350 miles/tank. It would be more if I didn't drive it the way I do. Also, I hear they get better after several oil changes which makes sense because all internal parts are broken in and will run smoother then when brand new.

List of dislikes...
-ipod playback. It drives me nuts! It takes a solid 45 sec - 1 min just to load the ipod. I'm used to aftermarket radios where when I turn on the car, the ipod loads quickly with no hesitation. Also, once it's finally loaded, it starts from the beginning of my music list EVERY single time. You have to go through the menu to play whatever artist, song, list you want. There is no continuous play back from the last song you were playing when you turn the vehicle off.
-Wipers. The rain sensing wipers drive my bonkers. I can't manipulate the settings enough to my liking. I like more then 3 drops of rain on the windshield before I activate the wipers. I think they are too sensitive.

Overall, the last two issues wouldn't keep me from purchasing the vehicle. They are trite and honestly, EVERY vehicle has its quirks. I can live with both.

On a side note, I almost swore off Mazda due to the fact that I had to replaced the air condition in my Mazda 3 WAY too soon compared to other vehicles. I believe I had 45K miles on the clock when it crapped out. After some research, it seemed like it was a common issue. Worse, I couldn't find an aftermarket one that worked (VERY limited aftermarket support for the compressors) so I had to get bent over at the dealership pricewise to get a new one. This is when I learned that some of the Mazda parts are crazy expensive to replace which I wasn't too happy about.

This is just my experience with my CX-5 so far. I really am happy with my purchase. This has everything I want in a CUV and I smile every time I get in it. I like how everything blends together and gives me a great driving experience. THAT is the reason I got one. What's yours?

Good review, probably one of the best I've read here in a while. When you refer to the "5" though be careful because Mazda also makes a small minivan based off the 3 called the Mazda 5. I happen to have a 2012 Mazda 5 along with my 2014 CX5 Touring with 23,500 miles and drove a 2013 CX5 sport for 27,500 miles. Although the CX5 is tops in the small SUV class in handling dynamics the Mazda 5 is a better handler than the CX5 all while riding better too.

Wait till your engine breaks in too. Owning my second Skyactiv power train now I can tell you these engines really wake up after 10,000 miles, especially with the 2.0, and the 2.5 gets pretty peppy off the line. Again very nice review that I enjoyed reading.

Great write-up. I agree with almost all of your points. The CD with Centerpoint is fantastic. Far better than the FM. But like you say, it needs to be turned up. For me, the highest praise I can give this car is: I love to drive it! And my other car is a BMW E46.

Howdy NJCARGUY,

Thanks so much for the great write up, really had a lot of information that
I've been interested in. Still sitting on the fence with the 2015 CX-5, vs
waiting for the 2016.

Looking forward to hearing / reading a follow-up along the way !!!

Thanks again, Take Care,

CK

I've had no problem adjusting the sensitivity of the auto wipers... Rotated to the least sensitive setting, it takes a quite a bit of water to get the wipers going. I'd investigate that (or check with the dealer.)

As for the stereo, with the Centerpoint on, it sounds pretty ok however I dislike centerpoint is only available on a few sources and not all sources. As the factory premium sound system I find it a bit disappointing in general however I work in music and recording orchestras so my daily work setup is considerably more expensive and acoustically tuned. On top of that, my previous cars had better premium sound systems (Audi, Lexus) but the cars were more expensive too. I'm trying to wait until a year has passed before mapping the acoustic space of the cabin and engineering a new speaker solution (most likely with non-automotive speakers since my experience is with music studios and active crossovers however mounting depth is a huge problem because of the basket depths on standard drivers.)

I've adjusted from lowest to highest and don't find ANY difference in the settings. I will try the dealer, thank you.

Just to confirm; have you enabled the rain-sensing wipers in setup? I was grumbling at mine the other day, thinking, they're just like ordinary intermittent wipers...which is what they are if the sensing isn't enabled. (dunno)

I thought I did. I'm going to feel pretty dumb if I didn't.

Also, note that even in the auto mode, there are 4 different speed setting for the rain-sensing wipers. You could choose how much water you want on your windshield before the wipers kick in.

Osho

You don't use RainX on your windshield do you? I used it on my other car and I found it caused the water to roll off the area of the windscreen that contains the photocell. Its the photocell that reads the amount of rain that triggers the auto wipers.

I bought my CX-5 almost 3 months ago and I started using RainX on all the windows. I later discovered that it was having a strange effect on my tinted rear windows....sort of discolored it in blotches. I immediately stopped using it.

Bon

Could the blotches you see, be caused by you wearing polarized sunglasses?? Those will make tempured glass look full of spots / blotches.
You will notice the windshield is ok (it's not tempured), but all the side and back windows are.

Nice review, echo most of it and I think rain sensing wipers are a waste and generally annoying- also have on my E82 and hate them. Cool thing about Mazda is they give you the choice of variable intermittent or sensing, genius! Add on the ability to turn down the blinker volume and one touch 3 pop feature and I was very impressed with some of the little things they did there. Infotainment was initially the big letdown as I was essentially unable to use my beloved ipod classic with about 16g worth of music. But I finally got myself a smartphone and a music service that syncs wirelessly (so I'm not constantly racking up data usage) and I'm very happy with that streaming locally over BT and sound quality is very impressive as well for a system without a sub. For 30k loaded (including roof rack and bars) I think I got hell of nice car. The fact that I often prefer it to E82 to commute in may be a sign I'm getting older but I know this is the only car in its class that I'd be able to say that about. I talk up the car and the brand whenever I can and can easily see myself replacing the E82 with the diesel 6 if given the chance.

I was skeptical of rain sensing wipers but they came with other options I wanted.

When I started using them in the rainy PNW I became a huge fan.

They work very well and it's nice that they come on instantly when an on-coming 18-wheeler douses your windscreen after a rainshower leaves standing water on the road. They respond more quickly than I can and leave me free to manage the actual driving.

Nice review, I love mine also.

I tried a 2.0t SantaFe and VW tiguan before purchasing the CX5 thinking that the power from these engines would make it easier for me to do the transition from my mazdaspeed 3 (264hp and 201hp respectively vs 184hp).

Went to see a ford escape, didnt like the styling, inside and out
Did not look at the Nissan rogue (was the old model at the time) because i hated the looks of it plus CVT.
The new one would have made me gone and try it because of the design, but I probably would have still skipped out on it due to CVT.
Did not like the new cherokee front, so didnt go and see it.
hate the look of the Rav4 and the Honda Crv.
The Kia sportage was only interesting in 2.0t trim and was too expensive. I was not sure i liked it from all angles.

The SantaFe felt a little too big, and the steering was sooooo vague I was constantly correcting it on the highway, plus to get the 8 inch screen nav I had to get the limited witch was 5k more, if not, It had no nav, and a tiny 4.3 inch screen. I liked the dash (even if its a little busy), the heated steering, front seat cooling, back seat heating, panoramic sunroof and the engine's power (plus the fact that it used 87 octane fuel).

The Tiguan felt too small, pushing the radio buttons made the hole panel move, and the dash didn't look so good to me.
The boot was as small as my speed's, there was no keyless entry at also 5k more for the fully equipped.
I was not overly impressed with the power from the 2.0t (doesn't feel like a GTI thats for sure), plus It needs premium gas.
I liked the exterior styling with the R line wheels, led headlights, the engine was peppy, and it was fun to drive.
I see this as a higher awd golf, and would have probably tuned the engine to get more power out of it.

Finally, getting in the CX5 just felt good, it did everything right... not great, but satisfying.
Looks great inside and out, actually one of the few suv's that I have liked from day one.
great driving dynamics and even with the least power out of the 3, It didn't feel that much underpowered on the road. plus it was definitely going to be the most fuel efficient of the gang.
The price was good, the features, the drive feel, the size... just felt the less compromise to me for the price.

If I had to make the CX5 even better (or mazdaspeed version), It would have:

from the santaFe:
engine's power (264hp and 270lbs tq)
panoramic sunroof
cooling seats/rear heated seats
heated steering wheel
8 inch screen

from the tiguan:
headlight rdl led (or like the ones on the mazda 6)
wheel arches extensions
rear centre console vents

all this on a slightly lower suspension and wider wheels/tires would make it competition for much higher priced suv's even if they charged 5k more for it.

Nice review, I love mine also.

I'm even easier: (bigger screen and heated wheel would be nice) oh and reclining rear seats that it really should have already.
Mine would have a hi-po diesel (think GLK250 not 328d) on a slightly lower suspension and wider wheels/tires would make it competition for much higher priced suv's even if they charged 5k more for it.

I sure hope they do something like this they have engineered a very nice foundation that with a few tweaks it would be a real standout, X3 beater on the cheap.

I do not use RainX. I don't care for their products.

Speedbegone...I was having the same dilemma engine wise crossing over from my SRT4 to anything else. Like you, this CUV was just a good fit. Everything works together and I like how the vehicle looks. Call me shallow but I'm always about looks. I constantly get complimented on my ride and I enjoy every minute I'm driving in it.

hi
