LCD/DLP Projection TV Questions ???

OK, I'm looking at new TV's since my old 36" Panasonic with discolored spots (from being too close to my old big speakers back in the day) and I was at Best Buy the other day and saw the new Sony and Panasonic LCD rear projection TV's and they looked friggin' awesome! Unlike the other standard rear projection TV's that were there these looked amazing.......less glare, no shadowing near the edges, clearer picture, and better visibility from all angles. Best thing was these TV's were thin, light (85lbs), and around $3k for 50". I'm not sold on Plasma yet (mainly because of the expense and short life of the screens) and to be honest these TV's looked better than the plasma's they were sitting next to. Does anyone have experience with these new TV's and know the good/bad cuz I'm about to haul off and buy that b****.

LCD and projection are two different things...

LCD are the super thin TV, and the actual plasma inside of them only has a standard life of 5-7 years..

A projection TV is a lot deeper, but has a much longer lifespan..

If you really want the best out there.. look at the New Samsung DLP TV's. You won't be disappointed ;)

That's the funniest s*** I've heard all day.

LCD projection is the LCD version of old school projection cathode ray tvs

they're nice. if I had the dough I'd get one

the only downside is... uhhh they're big? :p

actually went to look at these in more detail today. The DLP and LCD projection TV's side by side show the DLP picture was WAY superior. I was looking at the Samsung 50" DLP and the 50" Sony LCD.......they were playing a demo DVD and the place where you could tell the most is when they showed the Best Buy logo......on the Sony/LCD the edges were a bit funny and aliased but on the DLP they were dead perfect. The DLP is only about $200 more than the LCD so I think I'm going that route. It also has PC inputs and DVI inputs........I can't wait :)

i have the 47" samsung hdtv and love it. just figured i would share!

Thanks for posting! I've never owned anything Samsung before and wasn't sure of the quality of their products but after posts like yours and lots of internet research I'm reading mostly positive info.

n.p., i have had mine for like a yr or so and have had no problems except for bad cable. dvd's look great though and the tv's sound is excellant as well

I work at the Stereo Shop in Greensburg and we sell both Sony LCD projection sets (regular line and XBR). One thing I do not know if you were told is that you will have to replace the bulb in them. Right now a replacement bulb is about $200 and we figured the average person would have to replace them about every 2 years or so. They are great TV's and do look nice. I could make you a great deal on a 70" if you want :D . The 42 and 50" regular line are hard to get because of the demand...we are still waiting for 20 to come in.

Plasmas have a recommended viewing distance of 8-10 feet, any closer and you can see the pixels. We have sold plasmas for about 8 years and have never had a service call on any of them, they seem to hold up very well...they are just really expensive.

One other thing is that rear projection screens are probably going away, Pioneer quit producing their Elite line and will probably end production on their regular line next year focusing on plasma and LCD.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, the Sony Grand Wega 60" Projection LCD. You have to replace that bulb on the front every 8000 viewing hours. Its a decent set. Plasmas, also nice. Honestly It's a lot of money for those though. I've sold those for years and I have yet to see a real benefit in them. My money would be placed in a DLP Projector from Runco or inFocus. By the way..DVD=480i, progressive DVD=480p HDTV=1080i DLP=720p....All that means is that DLP is most vivid and smooth image..

Thanks.....that's good stuff to know. I'm sure that the LCD and Plasma are definitely the way to go for the future but they are still VERY costly for me. I'm pretty much decided on getting the DLP projection instead of the LCD cuz it's only like $200 more and difference is very noticeable. If you've got those in stock let me know and we can talk price :)

thats why i lik CRT projectors, no bulbs and you can also get a much higher resolution out of a CRT vs LCD or DLP

only problem is they are not as bright sometimes, they are frickin huge, and they are a pain to setup

I have had a Samsung 27" HDTV for several years now and it has been flawless. It has lots of nice features and a great picture.

I'm a big lover of Samsung electronics. I don't have an HDTV (yet) but my 27" Samsung and Samsung DVD players have been GREAT and were hundreds less than the competing brands.

they had the CRT projection TV's next to the DLP and LCD ones and I couldn't believe how much darker and washed out the CRT screen was.....and it gets darker around the edges. That DLP was just flawless......it shamed a $10k plasma that was next to it.

I'm not sold on the LCD or DLP sets yet. True the picture is awesome, but I'm concerned with life expectancy and maintence costs. And there is LCoS coming down the pike too. I did see the Sony 70" LCD this weekend at Circuit City. That thing is huge. They had Finding Nemo playing and it looked incredible. For now I'm going with a 65" Mitsubishi CRT projection. It will do me for a while.

Monstermile, I just bought the Mits 55" silver plus CRT projection set, I really like the picture. However, we just got in the 55 and 65" platinum sets and if you can swing the price, they are worth it. Beautiful gloss black cabinet and the picture is comparible to the Pioneer Elite. They are an additional $2000 though.

loj68, I would love to sell you a set but the cost of shipping would more than outweigh the discount I could give. I would recommend looking at a specialty shop for pricing. We beat Best Buy's prices all the time plus you may get better service. We deliver and setup for free (to our local area). Talk to me in February and I would be happy to take a "delivery road trip" to NC to miss some snow.

the sony 60" is crap really. I dealt with it on a day to day basis for a couple year. I'm not a fan of rear-projection LCD's at all..Picture quality doesn't match up with the cost..and HDTV isn't that impressive on it. Morever, LCD projectors are very nice. DLP is by far and away the way to go..space saving and has the best picture quality than anything. 720p afterall is clearer that 1080i (HDTV)

Im the Video Sup of Best Buy #113. I just wanted to add a lil to this post. First off in all fairness to plasmas, they are the most reliable designs as far as high end monitors. I can actually say that in my 3 years working at BB ive only ever seen ONE problem with a plasma, it was a Daewoo that had a cooling fan shut down. When you go into an electronic store to look at these tvs most places are running a sentcore style system that loops a compressed upconverted HD feed. It looks f'n awsome on the lower resolution tv's like the projo's and just faboulous on the lcd's and dlp's, but... if you can get your hands on a true uncompressed HD signal you will see where the plasma monitors shine above the rest. A lil info on the DLP vs the LCD projo. Which ever DLP you buy uses essentially the same chip, its produced by Genisis who is ran by texas instruments and who also badges the chips under the name Faroujda. The LCD projos are all proprietary to the manufacturer. The DLP chip can produce 16.7 million colors and do it MUCH faster then the LCD projo. This equals a much faster and accurate picture.

Tru mitsu's are pretty much the best consumer level projo's but as far as the diamond and platnium series They use 9" guns vs the 6" found in the silver and gold plus series. In general the Mitsu's perform best on a HD signal whereas a nice toshiba well outperform the mitsu on a lower level digital signal like cable or satelite. The only think I really like about the mitsu's is the Netcommand which allows the tv to control all of your home theater components and even a secuirity system if your house is set up for it.

I would say go for the DLP, its proven to have an awsome track record over the LCD projo. But I would wait for the new models to come out from samsung. They take the same size frame from this years 43" model which is 40.5" across and enlarge it to 40.6" and squeeze in a 46" screen. It is just beautiful. Also keep in mind with either the DLP or the LCD projo your gonna need a good power source, get yourself a decent line conditioner. It will help keep the running voltage in check that stops clouding of the bulb.

Good luck
