JosueP5's '03 Protege5 Build Thread.

Cool, thanks!

The AEM wideband I have now is cool, but it's overkill for a stock DD. And if Evan can get more use out of it than me, I'm happy to hook him up. :)

I'm pretty sure Phen was being sarcastic, Wes.

Lol, I know, I deleted the part where he stated that.

I wish I could into electronics. That was the section that my HS physics class decided to skip, of all things...

Looks like you're making great progress, man. I probably would have been all over your turbo setup about a year or two ago, before I lost all faith in my motor, haha.

Oh, and the previous owner finally got back to me on the locking lug socket. I told him I was waiting on it to pull the motor, so he said he'd overnight it. Hopefully I can pull the motor tomorrow or Friday night.

Regarding gauges, I'd like some because I'd absolutely love having access to all that data. But you're right, it's really not necessary. And it's just more s*** to be distracted by when driving.

I know it wouldn't be as easy, but I think you could remove the motor without removing the wheels. It's easy enough to pop out the axles, then you should be home free, no? Worst case, I've heard of some creative ways to remove those lug nuts :)

I could get a set of special sockets off the tool truck that would just rip them out, but I'd only need them once, not really worth the purchase right now.

And I'm probably going to have to at least pop the lower balljoints off to get the axles to slide out of the tranny enough. I don't see the axles coming out any other way. I could possibly do this with the wheels on, but it'd be a REAL b****.

You don't have to pop the ball joint, in fact even when you get the wheel off I wouldn't recommend it. It's much easier to unbolt the control arm, there's less risk of damaging the ball joint dust cover and I think it's faster.

One way I found online to remove locking lugs w/o the key is to 'pound' a size smaller socket onto the lock and then use a breaker bar to 'pop-it'. But if you are going to do this, have some 12pt sockets on hand, ask me how I know.

When we swapped Kevin's 1.8 we didn't need to remove the axles from the hub, just from the tranny. I can't remember what the trick was that we did though... Maybe just unbolt the shocks from the shock tower to get enough play to pop them out of the trans and have a helper make sure they're clear when removing the motor and lined up when installing. And the little slot on the ring for the axle has to be on top or they won't go back in. ;)

Haha....how do YOU know?!

Broke the $%@&^!? key on my sis-in-laws Honda Pilot a couple of weeks ago trying to get the lugs broken. It wasn't until after I dropped $20 at a local tire shop that I found out the 12pt socket was the key...my stoopid ass was trying to hammer a 6pt 18mm socket onto a 19mm lock. lmao Had I known beforehand I would have bought the socket at Sears and pounded away...lifetime guarantee FTW. hehe

I don't believe you can remove the driver side axle without unbolting the control arm (or popping the ball joint) or disconnecting the tie rod. The strut stays where it is, you just have to unbolt the steering knuckle from the strut (but that's very easy). There simply isn't enough clearance to get the axle out and under the car.

Are you pulling just the engine, or the engine and transmission?

Depends on how you look at it. You don't yank the engine out just to replace the clutch...

I don't think it's possible ... or at least it won't be very easy. I don't think the motor can be moved enough towards the passenger side so that it clears the transmission's input shaft.

It would be interesting to try though :)

I did a quick hookup of the boost and water temp gauges at lunch to check the color for a potential buyer (low balled me though) freaking things are NICE!! Really has me thinking about keeping the water temp and replacing the boost with another prosport!

haha....guessing that they are amber/white? At least that is what I would run to match the stock gauges.
