Betta fish Question

I had a few questions about my new betta fish, right now he is living in a 2 gallon (aprox) tank with no filter or anything. He started blowing bubbles and I was wondering what that was about? Now I can't tell if he is sick or normal...? Sometimes he will just hang there motionless, right now he is resting on the bottom (on the gravel) every once in a while he will do that. Also, how do I get food out if it drops to the bottom? A few peices have fallen to the bottom and I'm worried about them, about how many pieces should I worry about?

you dont need to have any filtering system or anything, but what you need to do at least once a week (depending on how much your feeding him) is change the water. just make sure to scoop him into a bag and float the bag into the clean water.

as far as 'resting' on the bottom, my fish do that from time to time. just make sure he doesnt have white film or spots on him (that is called 'ick' and it is deadly to fish) or any kind of flukes.

what color is it? pics? i love fish

its black with red fins laced with blue, what is this white film you speak of? how obvious is it?

the bubbles means that you have a male and he wants some poo-tang feed the fish pellets if possible. Ive had my beta for almost 4 years thats right 4 years in a glass bowl that hols 1 gallon. if you dont over feed you can go up to 3 weeks without having to change th water, also DO NOT PUT THE FISH IN A LARGER TANK THAN YOU HAVE ALREADY. it freaks them out (strike)

if he dies, fry him up for dinner
Don't do it. My old roommate in college cooked up a couple of our goldfish after we left for Christmas break and turned the heat off....opps. Those little bastards stunk the enitre apartment up for a week!

I actually bred bettas twice last year, so I know all about them. The bubbles mean he's happy. He's making a bubblenest, which means he want sto mate with a female (and if he did he'd squeeze eggs out of her and put them in bubbles in that nest). Dont do a full water change unless the water is absolutely distugsting. Do partial water changes, and make sure the watter has been treated firsdt and been sitting for a day or two.

I have my Betta fish in a regular tank with my gold fish and a sucker fish. He's been in there for about a month now. Everyone seem to be getting along, no fighting. The only trouble I have is trying to feed the Betta. I tap on the top of the tank just before dropping the food, now when they here the tapping they all come up to the top and I give the gold fish there food and the Betta gets his own food.

hey, i just changed his water ( i was kinda nasty looking )
i did a recommended half water change, but there is still scum on the side and the water has alot of suspended stuff in it now from the water

anyone? should i scrub the sides and do a full water change?

I'd wait a few days and make a new half full tank or something of water. Then pour half of the old water into this new jar through a fish net or something that will catch the nasty stuff. Try to avoid a full water change if you can.

why avoid full change?

what bout the stuff stuck to the side? my fish doesn't seem to happy about things, he is darting around he even jumped out of the water once. he is calm now, but earlyer he was not happy (shrug)

Betta fish should always be kept in a covered, ventilated container (to keep them from jumping out). It isn't because they don't like the water -- they jump like that in the wild to get from one puddle to another in the rice paddies that they're native to is SE Asia.

Contrary to what some people will tell you, Bettas will struggle with staying healthy in a very small container because the water is so hard to keep clean. You don't want to do a complete water cahnge because it will remove all the healthy ammonia- and nitrite-reducing bacteria present that promote good health (not all bacteria is harmful to fish).

Here's my advice -- get a small aquarium with a filter. They aren't expensive (about $25) and will help promote your fish's health. Heck, some of the newer ones in the 3-gal range even have a small power filter! Here's an example from petsmart.com --

Best of luck. PM me if you need more help!

Never put two males in the same place........it's very interesting, till you realize one of your fish is dead, and the other is hurt...my friend did this cause he's stupid

Funny, I know some guys from college who were studying aquaculture and they used to get some males together and have fights with them and take bets.
Did you know that they can be sent through the mail as long as the envelope is kept damp??

A beta fish. What I would do is make him look in the mirror.
