Berty's Cosmo

nice one Berty, I can see why my engine builder said when I go stand alone he would have to make a wiring loom up as well
few other jobs to do before I get to this headache, 2 years I estimate based on that I do want to use it each summer and do the work in the autumn / winter

keep us posted on your progress and good luck(drinks)

I like how you mounted the coils. do you have any more pictures? I mounted mine on top the rotor housings, and looking back I wish would have mounted them someplace else. I think while my engine is going to be out of the car I will relocate them.

I would have preferred to of mounted them on the housings, however because I had to retain the factory loom, it meant that I just didn't have the space. The battle with mounting the coils where I did was getting them low enough in the engine bay so that they would clear the bonnet when closed. I had to make custom brackets out of aluminium to get the right the clearance as I couldn't find anything pre-made that suited. I just used some 90 degree aluminium to do it.

Thanks Frank. :)

how long were you away Berty?

did she fire up OK when you got back,, and how did you get on with sorting that wiring loom out?

Frank

Still not going Frank - the computer needs to be tuned. I can get it to almost start, but the fuel maps are way off with the current injector set-up.

When it almost starts, boy does it sound meaty!

I am just test fitting the injectors at this stage. Note the fuel hose I am using in this picture was just a place holder until I could get the right stuff. I had to grind the throttle cable mount of the thermostat housing to fit the rail in.

Turbosmart FPR2000 to match the AN8 fittings on the rails. It was a real pain getting to mount properly to this point of the cars body. Lots of stuffing around to get the drill onto the right angle.

Ignore the blur, it was meant to be artistic shot of car parts. (oxymoron?)

Here is the wastegate just chilling out. The picture really doesn't capture how big these gates are. I had to a new hole plumbed into the top of the gate due to its new mounting positing. I replaced the 7psi spring with a 14psi, that way I can ramp the boost up to 28PSI via the DSBC.

Loctite 567 is my savior.

THIS... was a pain in the ass. If you want to run AN8 size rails, then you need to grind your manifold down to accommodate the extra size. Don't do what I did though and grind right through the bloody injector runners. GRRRR.

Took the LIM to the fabricator and he welded some 2mm aluminum to hide my shame. This manifold also got the black crinkle coat treatment.

Bling.

Thanks for the comments. It goes in for a tune next week. Fingers crossed that the gearbox survives!

Note the placement of the turbine housing - lets see how much my washer bottle enjoys radiant heat. Fingers crossed the turbo beanie arrives before the tune happens otherwise I am going to be on the lookout for a new washer bottle.

Congrats on the great job you are doing on your stand alone ecu. It all looks a bit daunting to a non electrical type like myself to go down that track one day. Good luck with your tune session coming up, will it be done on a dyno ?
Cheers Darryl

All looking good Berty

fingers crossed for you on the map,, I bet you cant wait to hear it fire in to life (wow)

Nice work and thanks for taking the time to post pics and details, Berty...Good luck on the tune as well! (2thumbs)

The Cosmo went for a trip today to Rotary Motorsport. I'm getting the workshop to check over my handy-work and tune the car. I was warned that the power output will be limited by the stock fuel pump and that I need to upgrade this. I have also been told that the minimum oil return line for a turbo on the 20B should be Dash 10 (I only used Dash 8).

Update - The workshop just let me know that it is up and running and that it should be making its way onto the dyno tonight (idhitit)

you will be like an expectant Father waiting to hear your baby scream

I will be interested to see what she goes like,, stand alone and manual box for me later on this year,, and then single turbo next year
I do hope the results outweigh the costs!!!!

Soooo wish we had these in the states...

your time will come only 3 years to wait before you can import a 1990 model
that will give you the time to save up as prices are mental in Japan,

I have just seen in Japan 2 more 20b engines heading over to the states and 2 shells off to the breakers yard :'(

2 more 20b Cosmos bite the dust,, I was on another forum and they estimate less than 1000 original 20b's left in the world,, some have even said closer to 500(wow)

Future classic...Possible trigger could be the next gen Mazda Rotary, especially if it's a success...It could kickstart increasing values for all past Rotary Powered Mazdas.

Any updates, Berty? Dyno? :D

Yep- update from today is that it made 350Kw, however I need to fix a few issues before it can be wound up to its full potential. The workshop has said that it has 400+ in it "easily". I'll post more when I get home.
