Anybody have their parking brake get stuck?

The parking brake on my Protege has rusted out, and it does not return to the resting postion to release the caliper pads from the rotor. Has anybody have this happen before?

Is the light just on, or are the pads actually stuck to the rotor? Some WD40 on the moving parts on the rear caliper should free things up. In the future, don't leave your parking break on for extended periods, no need to use it parking on a flat surface.

Actually I popped the wheel off, and the spring that is used to pull the level back to its resting position is rusted to hell and doesnt move at all. I will try to soak it in PB Blaster until it breaks loose, and then clean it off and grease it up. The same spring is going to get treated on the drivers side of the car.

Sounds like you know what to do. Mine got stuck on a different car after leaving it for a (rainy) week.

I'm glad I read this. Just this week I have been having some bad trouble. I believe my front passenger caliper is sticking.
Mind you I usually have the boyfriend or a shop look and work on my car. But I want to start learning on how to do this myself. So please do correct me if I'm saying something wrong or in the wrong text.
So I have always thought I had a problem with my ABS. When I'm sliding in the snow they make outrageous scare the s*** out of you jerks and the front of your car is tearing apart noises. I know that some of that is normal but with as crazy as mine gets I think mine might be over board. Also I notice that when the Abs is working, the light doesn't in the dash. Is that normal?
So now that you have some history of the brakes, last week I was driving and when I came to a slow stop I noticed a grab and let go,grab and let go. But no noise, just that. So I didn't think anything of it,
Then it started to feel like the brake was sticking as I was driving, like something was holding me back ya know.
A few days later driving on the highway felt slight shaking in the steering wheel and at the feet of the passenger. When I hit the breaks slight thuddering but I was thinking rust on rotors or something like that.
The next morning same thing but MUCH worse. I mean bad. Scared the s*** out of me. Pressure to the brakes felt and sounded like straight death lol.
After some investigation I noticed that it happens after I have been driving my car for about 10 or 15 mins. Before they really warm up I guess they are fine like nothing is wrong with them. Then the hell starts. I have also noticed that on that passenger rotor there are 2 grooves going all the way around that are not on any of the other rotors. They just appeared soon after the shaking started.
Now I have taken it to Goodyear prior to the major shaking and they said nothing was wrong after taking it around the block. I have also been telling my boyfriend ever since winter (ABS) that something was wrong and he also had said he didn't notice anything. Even after the major s*** started happening I had him drive it a few mins after it happened and he said he didn't feel anything. I know I'm not crazy I'm not the only person who has felt it lol. It's like it has a mind of it's own. Almost like when your sick as hell and the day you go to the doctor you don't have any symptoms. Any ideas.

Rear caliper(s?) seized. Rear rotor(s) warped. The heat from your rear breaks being stuck on will get pretty intense, the rear disks are solid; no vents. The excessive heat likely caused your rotors to warp which would give you a shuddering upon braking.

I can't say anything for the ABS, as it is absolutely terrible on these cars, and mine's disconnected.

But you're probably looking at at least new rear rotors, and a slider service on your calipers.

Funny, I found the ABS on my Protege to be pretty damn effective when stopping in the snow. Compared to the other cars I've driven it works pretty well.

Try disconnecting it, if you're not a panicy person, you can stop faster without it.

I can say this; i don't have it and don't miss it. The car stops predictably without drama. BUT if you have it and you are in an accident and the insurance co finds out - it is all they need to 'deny' the claim...

And THAT is probably the sole reason why I want to have it working, for the insurance bastards. (rant)

My old Civic didn't have ABS and stopped just fine for me when I did have to slam on the brakes.

Last night I soaked the parking brake spring in PB Blaster and by morning it was completely flexible again. I then soaked it in Evaporust for about an hour or so to eat off some of the rust built up on it. Afterwards, I got the spring back on the brake with the help of the tire iron and a screwdriver and the brake was working again. I covered it with Vaseline afterwards to make sure that this never happens again. I also soaked the other spring on the driver's side rear parking brake to make sure that one also doesn't sieze.

Ok so I just got back from the shop today and they said it was going to be around $300 to $400 to fix my s***! My caliper pins were getting stuck and screwed everything up. So my question now is should I just go with stock rotors again or can slotted ones help prevent this from happening. I drive my car pretty hard and I dont want them to just resurface them for them to just do it again on me.

You should try to get a pair of slotted rotors. As for your caliper pins, since you are in the rust belt, you need to occasionally pop out the pins and apply some grease to them.

Well my driver's side brake took 20 minutes. The passenger side brake had a siezed caliper and took longer because we had to swap the brake line on it, then let it bleed the air out. Make sure you get some PB Blaster, a wire brush and some brake cleaner.

So I figured out my problems tonight. Goodyear bastards broke off one of my rear studs and the lug nut only goes half way. And all of my lug nuts took no strength to get untightened. I'm pissed. They also stripped some. All of this without letting me know about it.
What do I need to buy to replace the stud that the lugnut goes on? And how much is that gonna cost me?
