2nd gear issues

Hello all,

Ok so I have 1100 miles on her and I was wondering if everyone agrees that the 1st to 2nd gear shift is a little rough. I hope this works out over time.

i find that when you get into 2nd, the gear just 'clunks' into sycro.
For other gears, it's not like that.
I don't find it a problem. Although, I notice it though.

i agree...i have 2500 on mine and it seems like shifting through the lower gears isnt as smooth as it was, and sometimes lags...i thought maybe putting the K&N filter was affecting something..but i'm not sure..

yes, i agree, its a bit rough, but with time you get used to and you can make it pretty smooth i think, not as smooth as 2nd to 3rd though

alot of the mp3 owners also have these tranmission problems, myself included, it won't work itself out, but it will get worse. the only thing you can do is take it to your dealer and have them fix the sycro's, if they don't give you the "i don't see anything wrong." story that many mp3 owners have gotten.

i thought the MP3 issue was 2nd to 3rd shift

i did but they gave me the nothing wrong story,so i'm taking it back when i take my mp3 out of storage. you got to remember, same tranny that is in my car is in the msp also, nothing changed, and these trannys are to damn weak.

damn that sucks, damn dealerships

1st to 2nd is can be rough, I ve heard putting redline MT90 tranny fluid, helps to get rid of this problem. I just got some friday and will be putting it in this week. I will tell you how it works, although others have done it and had good results.

I'm new the the manual transmission and I've been having the same problem. I'm smooth as ice with all the other shifts but my girlfriend makes fun of me when the car clunks into 2nd. I've gotten a few smooth shifts here and there, but overall its a tough transition.

Let us know how that transmission fluid works out.

Tranny fluid will make it smoother but you still won't be able to shift much faster .. because you still have to wait for the syncros to work themselves out. Be nice to your transmission. Work with it. Don't force it into gear ...

Our trannys are not weak. There are just some people who insist on bad driving habits and break them.

in my opinon the trannys are weak. they get this way from hard shifting, for example autoxing , in my case when i drove mine last winter but got stuck alot and had use my transmission to get out. bad habit may be it for some people but any kind of hard shifting and the tranny starts to go. i learned to drive a stick before a automatic and before i had my license so i think i can drive one farely good.

if a dealer does acknowledge the problem could they turn around and say that it is normal wear and tear on the synchros that causes this and that thus it is not a warranty issue?

never ever seen this problem

The tranny isn't no honda tranny, meaning it isn't as smooth as one, but it's not a shity as some make it seem. Drive it right, and it's fine. The only people I've seen have troubles with any protege tranny are the ones that don't know how to drive it.

Not saying you guys don't know how to drive or anything, don't take it the wrong way, but the only ones I've seen with problems are the ones that ask for it. I've read a lot of mp3 owners here having the same troubles, most of which seem to know what they are doing, but then again, I've never seen them drive either.

And, why would anyone need to downshift into 1st a lot?. Isn't this pointless?

Shifting hard is not proper technique! And it's no faster than shifting smoothly. But, there is something about the way Mazda changed the MP3 shift lever that makes you want to hurry it up and force it into gear .. more than with the Protege5.

newf: Some autocross courses (the majority of the ones that get setup in Ontario) require a downshift to 1st gear be it a hairpin or other tight and slow corner that you need to get good acceleration out of.

Downshifting to 1st is never going to be easy because of the huge difference in gear ratios of our transmission. But if you stomp the gas to really get the revs up .. way up .. and wait for it to fall into gear you will be fine.
